Looks like the dust bowl happened days before you visit, every building has siding falling off, roof damage. Even Route 66 their big attraction has zero care put into it. Drove it initially excited until the whole thing looks like a highway of seedy motels, almost locked my doors

Yeah, Topeka definitely has a pothole problem. I go out there to stay with my bf just to get away from KC, so it's become my second home for the last 11 years. There's not that much to do here, other than Wanamaker or downtown. And although this city has its share of issues, I'd say there is a stronger sense of community among the people than I have ever felt back home. So it's not that terrible here. Also Halloween is a crazy blast here lol.

I'm not sure but I think it's more about the cold and isolation. Think it started when they were trying to populate the state as it was new. But yeah, if you don't like cold wilderness then the dividend isn't worth it at all.

I live in Australia, and one of the worst parts of it, so cold is actually attractive to me. The average summer here could be classified as a natural disaster.

Also, isolation is good as long as I have the very few people I care about close by and internet is available. Other people are more of a negative.

There is definitely a huge difference between "cold" and "Alaska cold." Same thing with "isolation" and "middle of nowhere." Try going out into the middle of the outback and reverse how you view it in the sense of someone saying that they would also like some hot weather and isolation: that's essentially what your statements are comparable to.

It's definitely possible to be too cold. But it's objective fact that when faced with hot or cold, the latter is easier to deal with (warm fire works, taking off your shirt and putting on a fan doesn't, and even air conditioners struggle when it's 40+ celcius).

It is not objective fact, no. If anything the fact that more people live in hotter climates would imply the opposite: humans are more successful where it is hotter. And much like how air conditioners struggle at 40C+, fires are absolutely not good enough when it gets cold enough. Alaska can get to somewhere around -35C consistently in winter, a far more dangerous temperature for living than 40C.

The PFD is not that much, if anything it helps offset the insane cost of living there. Prices were outrageous when I left 16ish years ago, basically everything had to be imported. I can't even imagine what it costs to live there now. For yucks I checked out homes on Zilliw a couple years back and even the shittiest most crime ridden areas the houses started at 1/4 mil
