This was hard to get through. It's a parody of a song that stopped being funny to parody a decade ago, sung in a voice that, from what I can tell, is intended to be downright grating. I get that it's to parody the voice of the anime's Marik, but holy shit this is easily the only song I would've given a negative melody score if I could've. As far as characterization goes, this tells me almost nothing about the characters beyond the fact that they want to steal Yugi's pants; everything else is so meaningless that it actively detracts from characterizing the characters (there's a whole tangent about Alfred Hitchcock movies, I assume so they could make a cock joke?). I mean, it's slightly villainous in the way that they are trying to steal something, so it gets a single point on a technicality.

Look, I'm sorry to drop both Abridged nominations back-to-back. As much as I like Yu-Gi-Oh!, I never really found the Abridged all that funny beyond the Kaiba memes. I care even less about DBZ Abridged.

As a song, yeah, it's My Way by Frank Sinatra. It's a good song. This is a cover of the song that is entirely unchanged. It's decent, but it's still just a slightly worse version of a good song, so I can't really give it high marks in the melody department. I absolutely can't give it marks in any other department either, because again, it's entirely unchanged. If I wasn't looking directly at the nomination in my spreadsheet, I'd think it was just some guy at a bar on karaoke night singing Frank Sinatra. It's not even an inherently villainous song when Sinatra sings it!

Before running this topic, I didn't know there was a Littlest Pet Shop animated series. I kind of wish I could go back to not knowing that!

So I'll start with the good here, since I've been kind of rough on the last two. This is kind of villainous! I mean, it's all about greed and doing whatever's necessary to get by. Now, since this is Littlest Pet Shop, obviously it can't go very deep into what that entails, so that's about where I have to cap it off for villainy. I can also get a vague idea of the characters, a father and two twin daughters who are trying to be part of their dad's greedy corporation. But again, that's about as far as I can get with them.

What drags this down the most is the song itself. All of the vocals here are grating. The dad is sort of awkwardly talk-singing and the tweens are so high pitched it's distracting. Nothing really meshes together for me, and when the dad let out his "by jove, I think they've got it" line, I audibly groaned.

Earlier today, I was rethinking of revisiting YGO Abridged. I really enjoyed the first several episodes, but didn't have a chance to watch any of it for a year or so & just never went back to it.

This song has done a fine job of showing me that I missed nothing.

98. Biskit Family Business

Ah, Littlest Pet Shop. I loved that series and I'm still prone to quoting it on a regular basis because it had a lot of influence on me... I was really happy to see one of its songs get nominated, but I didn't think it had much of a chance at this particular topic.

...Honestly though, I'm not all that into it either? I mean, I love the characters and it's so nice to see them again, but musically, it's... fine? Even with my overwhelming bias in its favor, it's just... fine. I'm a bit sad that I don't like this more than I do.

It shared almost an identical group of people who worked on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, though it never really gained the same following for a number of reasons. Most pony fans have seen LPS at least once.

Same network as Friendship is Magic when Hasbro was airing a lot of new shows for their properties. If you checked out Ponies, it was pretty easy to just keep watching the next show about diminutive talking animals.

...Granted, I'm still not entirely sure how MLP took off like it did, but I'm sure it got a fair number of people to check out at least part of an episode of LPS.

Like Biskit Family Business, this is one that immediately just got to me with the vocals. I mean, I get it, they're trying to give the characters kinda silly voices to make them feel like cartoony rich people, but that doesn't exactly make for a pleasant song to listen to.

Also like Biskit Family Business, the main villainy here is all about greed. However, this doesn't strike quite as villainous, if only because the song is less about what they'll do to obtain money, and moreso just about how great money is. Which, yeah, it's villainous in the way greed as a whole is, but just liking money is super tame as far as evil goes (that's not to say the characters aren't evil, just that within the song itself, it's less about their actions and more about liking money).

I will give it an extra point for characterization here though, as I do get a pretty solid idea of their dynamic with each other, and they go to every length to justify the extent to which they like money.

Fun fact: the butler is played by Tony Jay (Frollo)

Also don't ever watch the movie this is from if you value your sanity. Believe it or not, this is by far the best song in it.

I'm not sure what happened to it either! I will say both Muppets songs were definitely listened to, rated and ranked so they'll both be here

I mean, I wasn't actively aiming for last place, but I'll take it! I was expecting Leather Pants to be my first to go and that it wouldn't last long.

I love the animation of Lickboot saying "We've got to have money!", but overall Biskit Family Business is my favourite of these songs so far.

I don't really know what I'm supposed to say here. Like, it's a good song. It makes for an effective boss fight track. It's not a villain song.

Is it about a villain? Kiiiiiiind of. But only in the loosest possible way, because all this really depicts is that it's a suspenseful action scene. Like if I didn't have a picture of Egg Dragoon in front of me, I easily could've seen this being in an intense heist movie or literally any other boss fight. It's very hard for instrumental tracks to do well as villain songs, because really there's only so much it can do to embody the character it's about. It's vibes and nothing more.

Solid boss fight though.

You're probably gonna hear me say this with the very low ranking songs, but I just don't care for the voices here! It's all going for a very particular late 2000s post-punk feeling that just misses the nostalgia period for me. There's also just something about the mixing that doesn't click with me, with the vocals sounding muddied with the instrumentals in a way that kinda makes it rough to listen to for me.

As far as the characterization goes, it's only very slightly there. You get just enough obvious references to know it's about Bowser, sort of, but what's there is very shallow. Mario wants to save Peach, Bowsette wants to fuck Mario. I mean, sure, that's fine, but part of the trouble with building the song around references is that there's ultimately not much substance to it.

For villainy, I mean, that's also not here, but she does very briefly but specifically reference locking up Peach, and mocks Mario for not getting any attention from her in an attempt to, again, bang him. It's not like evil but it's dickish enough, sure.

I actually kind of figured it'd get a low Villainy score but damn it's so catchy to me!

Yeah, again, the voices are annoying. Two of the three aren't exactly voices designed for singing, and unfortunately, one of those two gets the majority of the lyrics here. They've got at least a little rhythm, and even a tempo change mid-song, so I can give them a point there, but man it's not enjoyable to listen to.

Again, kinda like with Littlest Pet Shop, there's only so far they can go with villainy given that it's a show targeted at young children, but at least these three very clearly want to do evil and they make that clear. What evil do they want to do? Uh... make the ponies sad. How do they want to make that happen? By... being bad. It's hard to take the "crush to dust" line as a legitimate threat and not just a vague "ooooh we're gonna get 'em" given the rest of the song.

At least this is a situation where there are several characters that you can differentiate and attribe slightly different attitudes to. There are certain dynamics here between the three of them, and I'll give it a little credit for that, even if I couldn't tell you anything specific about them beyond "they don't like the ponies."
