I recently picked this up because I saw some comparisons to Outer Wilds.

And while I can see why people draw that comparison, goddamn is this gameplay tedious.

I'm so torn because I'm really enjoying basically everything that isn't the core gameplay.

I didn't get too far with it largely because there's this dude in the third area that wants you to feed him and I gave him all my locusts and nothing happened. And then I died and had to start over from the beginning. I tried to power through to get back where I was, but I just couldn't be bothered.

I should probably watch a let's play or something, because I know there's stuff under the hood that people are all nudge nudge wink wink about and I don't want to be left out, but I also imagine it's worth it to discover for yourself.

Void Stranger is both utterly fascinating and also ridiculously frustrating. I've resorted to kinda spoiling myself on some stuff just so I could pull up a list of puzzle solutions because I'm not doing all these again like the game seems to want me to.

goty 2023

I've recommended it to anyone who listens, and even some who don't. Especially because 2023 had so many high profile puzzle games (Cocoon, Viewfinder) that were so disappointing and superficial. Void Stranger shows what puzzlers can be and it totally raises the bar. I might even say it's better than Baba (prob leaning not tho). The forced repetition especially is super risky and interesting.

But like Baba, it's a sokoban. The point of the game is to solve hundreds of block puzzles. When you solve a really hard block puzzle, the game rewards you with more harder block puzzles. No matter what, you need to be able to enjoy the puzzles. That's why the game will never blow up like Undertale, even if it deserves it.

I loved and hated Void Stranger. I rage quit a lot, but I always came back to it and felt it was worth the effort... though I did wind up spoiling way too much, as there's no way to look up an answer to certain things without getting more information than you want. Wouldn't recommend the game to anyone because it's so frustrating, but I did love it. Mostly.

I found the discord was great for minimal hints at all levels of progression. But you gotta do the first ending (6 ish hours) yourself before you go there.

Yeah, I have accidentally spoiled a bit too much for myself like you mentioned.

I like sokoban puzzles, but I don't love them. I've basically decided that if a puzzle has taken me 10 minutes and I'm not that invested in it, I just look up the answer.

I just started the Lillie section of the game. If I weren't so intrigued by the non-sokoban elements of the game I'd probably have dropped it by now.

You're far enough that if you're sick of the puzzles, you should definitely make sure you get all the powerups to make the game much faster. Also it's very much worth it to set up an AutoHotkey config to input all your brands with 1 tap in a new run.

I skipped a ton of the game (accidentally) and looked up a few puzzle solutions too. It's kinda expected tbh. Just don't quit the game.

I have infinity, memory, wings, and sword if that's what you mean.

Though I am kinda wondering if I shouldn't be using infinity.

Also making you enter each of those twice seems kinda dumb/annoying, but maybe there's a reason for that?

It might be better not to use infinity but I think it's ok where you are. You def want to use the others.

I hate that you need to put them in twice. It's just for confirmation as far as I can tell. Honestly you should be able to just toggle them from the sides of the screen. But AutoHotkey does the job pretty well.

Well I'm playing on Steam Deck so not sure if AHK is an option for Linux (I've also never used it before).

But yeah, weird that they don't let you just toggle them from the sides since they are right there.

i really enjoyed my entire time with void stranger idk

one thing that was cool was that I played it blind in a group of like 4 people who all (mostly) simultaneously played blind so we got to experience stuff at kinda an accelerated pace and help each other. I really enjoyed the option to change the game color with this so everyone had a visually distinct stream.

Okay I have a question for people who have beaten or are further in the game than I am. I'm like 8 hours in and I am on my second playthrough after getting the ending where I'm voided. I'm pretty sure I need to beat the game without being void now and I'm just using a list of puzzle solutions I found online. How did other people do this? Because the game requires you to lose your infinite locusts halfway through, you could die at any time and have to start over, and there was no way I had either the patience OR skill to do it without just looking up a guide, even though I had already done these puzzles before. What did other people do here?? I'm pretty decent at sokoban puzzles, so I'm kinda baffled that people didn't lose their minds on this

You missed something important that allows you to bypass that requirement.

Hint: You need to take another look at the murals, in particular the non-broken ones.

I'm really annoyed that I didn't figure out the mural thing for myself, it was definitely possible for me to have gotten it but I missed that there was an extra piece. I do still wonder how this goes for people normally though - if you didn't figure this out you could just get really stuck, and you can't teleport to rooms at will so you could just bypass this and not see it and play for hours more making no progress. This game is bonkers

You really do get plenty of locusts, so it's not a huge problem. On my run, I got close to game over a couple times but that's it. And yes you can always use a guide if you need to ensure you survive.

Ultimately this game does not coddle you, and it's comfortable with you getting stuck or frustrated and quitting. It believes this is the only way to make the victories actually feel significant, and it's right.

It also means that you can use any tool in your disposal to win. There is no honor here, just pure challenge. When you beat this game, you actually BEAT it. I can't think of any recent game that does this. Undertale Genocide is closest.

Slowly chipping away at the Lillie playthrough. I kinda can't believe it's possible to solve these puzzles without the sword and wings. I still have to look up a bunch of answers.

Found a clue about Tan. Seems like I need to be on certain floors with a certain number of locusts? Guessing the infinity brand might prevent this from working properly.

I'm roughly where you are, I guess. I'm not really sure if reaching the end with Lillie is what I need to do next and if I need to do it unvoided or not, but also I am dying way too much to do it unvoided even with the sword and wings so I'll probably just go voided and see what happens?

I did find the clue about being on certain floors with locusts (and did fulfill it once) but I have no idea who Tan is LOL
