I'll usually defend fine dining as a concept (and people are flat out wrong about "tiny portions"), but this was just not it.

The food was good but I'm pretty sure 80% of the price tag was wrapped up in pomp. it was very classic french service, with an entire freakin' family tree history given for each glass of wine. The food was a lot of foam stuff. The entire experience actually seemed...dated?

It cost me $700 for two people, and I've honestly had more interesting dining experiences for half that.

Maybe I'm just jaded by fine dining at this point. But I dunno, looking around the other tables I started to think that this was just a place for wealthy bored boomers to have some regular weeknight food.

"Afford" is relative to what you like to do, I guess.

I prefer to spend money on experiences than things - some people would not balk at spending 4k on a gaming PC or 40k on a car, and I would struggle to spend over 1k on a PC and more than 5k on a car.

I live a pretty frugal life in general tbh. I buy almost exclusively second hand clothing, I have a shitty car, I get refurbished older phones. A disproportionate amount of money goes towards food things.

Yeah they exist, right along with million dollar cars and homes. It doesn't mean anybody that wants a good/great car, home, or gaming PC needs to spend that much

I have a literal 4090, 5800X3D, 64 GB of RAM and 8 TB of solid state storage in my computer and it's nowhere close to 4k. Maybe if I headbutted a brick wall a few times and clicked on random stuff on Amazon I could get it up to that much

Probably should read the specs in the link you posted because nobody but LinuxTechTips is gaming on a PC with a Threadripper or 128 GB of RAM

Michelin star restaurant : neighborhood $12-20 popular lunch joint == $5000 gaming rig : $500-1000 computer
In either sector, you're paying a huge premium for that extra 1% quality.

It's not that deep dude. Some people (not many, definitely not most) will spend 4k on a gaming PC. I literally work with a guy who spent this much on his.

Some people (not many, definitely not most) will spend $700 on a meal.

I've had better meals for like $200, so to your previous point about only needing to spend like $1k on a gaming PC...yeah.

The funny part is that tasting food is also very subjective as well. So paying $200 vs $700 doesn't really matter. It is all based on the personal tastes of the guest. I would actually compare restaurant fine dining to art collecting.

Price is typically based on a variety of factors:
a) Location of Restaurant,
b) Reputation of the Head Chef, ownership
c) Demand / Waitlist
d) Quality of Restaurant facilities
e) Perceived quality, --- of all five senses.

i mean like i'm not gonna knock fine dining as a concept, i ran a fine dining joint for a while
but i feel like comparing the value of a single dining experience to a physical possession (like a gaming PC) that retains at least somewhat of its original value and lasts more than a single evening, doesn't really work lol
i'd more compare fine dining to something like buying good tickets to see your fav musical artist or something

Yeah, forgot to mention that a large portion of Michelin Star restaurants already priced a set tip amount into the cover. Also, most are saying that the normal tip is around 5-10% or so, 15% is considered very generous.

It's much lower at Michelin Star restaurants, because everyone knows that the servers and waitstaff are all paid very well, relative to normal restaurants.

I think they use things like a PC or a Car, because, like many restaurants, you're paying +500% +1000% for an extra 1-5% in quality.

Harder to make that comparison with like an entertainment venue, but you are right in that I view fine dining more as enjoying art, than it is a commodity.

thats why i added the qualifier about seating
people pay exponentially more for "better" seats, and even more through scalpers
i personally wouldnt wanna be front row at an arena show, but people pay thousands for tickets like that

i remember i got gifted two tickets to see van halen when they first reunited with DLR like 20 years ago and the guy paid like $350 a pop for them since they were center floor

and like i said. if i buy a gaming rig, decide i dont like it, it wasnt worth it, need money, etc. i could turn around and put it up for resale for at least most of what i paid for it. (same with a car) cant do that with a disappointing dinner or a shitty concert lol

If you're more interested in good food, then you might wanna try 1 star restaurants and ask around ppl in your area for their opinion.
