Not to be a doomer, but we're not designed for our modern lives. Like we're fundamentally not. Constantly being connected, involved, fed incessant dopamine streams. Constantly expected to know and react. Never having a true off moment.

It's no wonder mental illness is more prevalent than ever. Anxiety is through the roof because we live in a society that manufactures anxiety.

Combine all that with real, unmistakable visible damage we're doing to our world and it's not a surprise people are fed up. That they just want something simple. Something that works. It's why Trump and the GOP's rhetoric works. It's a promise to return to a simpler time. Even if it is impossible to go back for multiple reasons, people want to go back to a time when everything at least purported to make sense.

Our technology evolved and out paced our social evolutions and we're still struggling to adapt.

Not to be a doomer. Then proceeds to be a doomer.

Also if there's a huge public backlash that forces them to do a 180, I bet all of the assholes who were pushing for this claim in their campaign commercials that they fought against it, much like how they'll fight tooth and nail against something popular and then claim in their campaign ads that they were essential to getting it passed.

I'm not intricately familiar with KOSA, but these 'protecting the children' proposals have usually been a guise for bad things.

The goal to implement age verification on social media sites, with big fines to sites that don't implement it well enough. Problem is, their definitions on what makes a site social media are so vague and far-reaching that it'll effect the entire internet, and the requirements for the age verification are so strict that sites would have to force users to give their IDs to access them in order to comply with it.

Figures. Protecting a few people, while having a chilling effect on others, is par for the course. We've been through this with the likes of the Comics Code.

This protects nobody. Forcing users to give up their privacy online by giving sites their IDs in order to pass age verification only hurts them, as it heavily increases the chance of identity theft and things they have posted and viewed online will be used to alienate, harass and target them and their friends and relatives in the real world.

OK, a good point.

This really does sound like a bunch of older pepole who don't care or understand about the Internet who are just going to break it because it will make them feel like they did something. Worst of all in a election year this can hurt Biden and democrats because this might get a lot of young voters upset.

Hopefully it repeatedly fails in implementation like it has in the UK

If only progressives would vote for Biden, then we could stop the democrats from passing this.

All we have to do is point out that politicians do in fact also have to submit their credentials and its DOA.

Can't speak for all of history but in modern times? It definitely sticks out.

I live in a pretty heavily red state, and the only ones that aren't against it that I asked were ones that didn't know what it was, and the progression was "How could this be bad?" Just from the name, to, generally speaking, "The government is spying on us!"
