It detracts from the agency, moral clarity, and legitimacy of some of the most important people in history, people who stood up for causes absolutely knowing they were going to die for it.

I feel like there are people who did it with dignity and poise who were very much of sane mind when they did it, yes. I also think there has been at least one person (the guy in this topic) who do it on an impulse and left behind two children because he was extremely unwell, mentally.

Upon further investigation and seeing his online posts, seems Aaron Bushnell was a terminally online, extremist pos. He celebrated the deaths of the 3 USA servicemen who died and also all the civilians who died on October 7th, so we don't have to have sympathy for him afterall.
His Reddit account is acebush1 and is still up in case anyone is interested.

Yes, when a country commits/facilitates genocide, the soul of its people (including its soldiers) rots from within. Some extreme protestors consider death to be a preferable state of being than complicity with such evil. Protestors like these utilize their fatal form of protest to embody that message.

I like how he did it in protest, yet there is no headline that says he's protesting. It's just "man sets himself on fire"

Americans don't like to/unable to recognize their country's crimes very often. That's why you have the media narrative, and the headlines we're seeing.

Also no one is saying that the most extreme act of protest you can do is the most common. That wouldn't make any sense.

And yet we didn't burn the country to the ground the multiple times our own government committed genocide and other crimes against humanity on our own soil. But the government continuing to turn a blind eye to Israel's reprehensible actions and suddenly we all deserve to suffer?

These two claims have nothing to do with one another, and yes, there is doubt he had mental health issues. Risking your life to bring attention to an issue you think is of imminent and profound moral importance does not diagnose you with mental illness.

Setting yourself on fire isnt risking your life.

There probably are ways so you can't survive. From what was said, I think they just didn't think it through.

There's a type of gelatin you cover yourself in for that, I've seen stunt professionals use it to walk a red carpet while literally aflame.

So unless you slather up beforehand, professionals being able to do it safely doesn't make lighting yourself on fire safer.

I only care about proving you can set yourself on fire and survive. Never said it was safe or safer.

People actually did set themselves on fire to protest the Vietnam War, so yes it's happened before. The fact that you didn't know about it doesn't change the truth.

America, the entire country has fucking sucked forever. Why is Israel genociding Palestinians the straw that breaks our will to live?

Like things are so fucking dire within our very own borders RIGHT FUCKING NOW and people are ready to lay their head down in the guillotine because of something a country on the other side of the world will continue to do with or without America as an ally.

It's because the other side of the world is getting genocided because of America. Like I said, self-immolation happened in the past in times where the US has committed massacres like the Vietnam War. Massacres and genocides are probably the worst thing you can ever do as a nation, so it isn't hard for me to understand how an extreme protestor makes this decision. This is also a country that regularly mass shoots each other so setting yourself on fire is less of a violent act than lots of Americans regularly do. I mean, the first thing the cop did was point a gun at a burning person.
