I wasnt talking about any specific poster here, but some talk about Christians almost as if dey are bad as pedophiles. And fyi I am a lapsed Catholic, mainly because I was never was very spiritual, not because of my disgust wit da child sex scandal. plenty of Protestant ministers are pedophiles.

Cool. I always liked the basic teachings of Christianity, as I am basically a nice guy at heart. Too bad most vocal Christians seem to be anything but.

I went to a Catholic high school and we had both religion class (which wasnt even really about learning Bible verses but more about morality, and the subject was actually called Religious & Personal Formation) alongside human biology, where evolution was taught straight faced.

Then again this is in Australia. We dont have quite the same problem with Christian special interest groups as the US.

US Catholic here and yes, we were taught about evolution and a bunch of other science. Were even taught not to take everything in the Bible as fact.

I dont practice da religion, dat doesnt mean I have anything against it. If I ever find religion, it will be Catholicism.

He did. See the bible is just a slice of time from the Israelites perspective. The creation story is static. Someone said this is what happened write this down. The idea of evolution wouldn't enter their brains because of what the books says and they wholly believe it.

Basically, you claim everything is the word of god. Then, when there's sufficient evidence so that you look like a dick for saying it, you revert to "it's not meant literally", or "yeah, we thought that too".

This. The Bible wasnt literal is a classic example of goalpost moving. Normally in debates and police interrogations, identifying major flaws in someones story is grounds to discredit it in its entirety, but for some reason religion gets a pass.

And then there's the large amount of Evangelical types that believe in either Biblical Innerrancy, Biblical Infallibility or both.

The dogmatic teaching to have a literal interpretation of the Bible is a relatively modern phenomenon, ironically. As others have noted here, it's important to conservative Christian evangelical groups. To most groups of Christians in the world, it does not matter if you take Genesis as literal history and most typically don't.

Growing up in Southern Baptist type communities, it was very interesting to learn how my understanding of Christianity was limited to a pretty specific subset that emerged in the US less than 100 years ago. If the Christian community around me was not so radical, it could very well be that I wouldn't be an atheist today. But the vehement denial of obvious truths is likely permanently entangled with Christianity, and it would be very difficult to convince me of any afterlife.
