Like, I can't fathom the idea of not having an office, even one you share with other people

I'd much rather have a cubicle than have to share an office or even worse work in an open office. I just need some personal space to work.

Welcome to the working world
I've never not had an office, nor have I ever been in a workplace that doesn't have an office (barring receptionists, factory workers etc)

Sure, they're shared sometimes, but it's still an office

You start in a cubicle, then work your way up the ladder to sit in a different cubicle, and then you keep climbing to different but similar cubicles, and if you do a really kick ass job the company lays you off because their profits werent high enough for the executive team to buy their annual vacation homes

Cubicles no longer exist. It's just open floor plan now. My team just sits around a small conference table

Nah, I still work in one. I'm just glad I don't work in our twin building that is open. That sounds completely miserable.

And close proximity to others who are often trying to have a conversation or hold a meeting and honestly multiple people all talking around me while I'm also trying to read, write, or also talk in a different conversation is a frustrating experience. Especially if there's a boomer coworker who prefers speakers over headphones.

Get headphones.

I assume somewhere not in the US. I don't think cubicles are very common in Europe, though I'm not sure about other parts of the world. I live in the UK and think of them as a grim thing that they have in US workplaces.

I didn't mind working in cubes, as long as I had headphones (especially open-back, so you can hear the phone or people trying to get your attention). Do they still make rear-view mirrors for monitors? Those come in handy, too. The worst part was having to dash out for personal phone calls. Way better than open office and half-height cubes, of course.

I'm sitting in my cube right now. I like my 3 walls with the opening behind me. Gives me some privacy. Also our space is laid back, we have a Bluetooth speaker on top of some wall dividers that people can hook up their phone and play music. Right now some rap music is playing, yesterday someone requested Elvis, but most days it's 90s and 00s music most of us grew up with.

Before this space I was in a place with cubes but the dividing walls were desk level, so everyone can see everyone in the room. I always felt like people were looking at my screen, since I was near the front and most people faced the same direction.

My job had me working at cubicles (well, I don't think they were cubes, but pretty much same thing), before I started working in someone else's office, and then at home.

OMG yes. We have a few of those in my office. Thankfully since we relocated, they aren't anywhere near me, so I'm not subjected to their Pandora playlists with ads

Ah, I didn't realize it wasn't a thing in Europe. It's common here and I've often seen cubicles depicted in Asian media as well. I just assumed it was common everywhere

Been a while since I logged on to my own account at Pandora.

Does uBlock not stop Pandora ads anymore?

The view was incred.
