I see it as a continuation of the "eyes of Ganon" that some villagers allude to in Zelda II. I like the concept that there are some people that also side with Ganon, kind of like a silly version of how in Lord of the Rings there are humans that fought for Sauron.

The Yiga were sometimes a little too over the top, and particularly in BotW there seemed to be inconsistencies regarding how serious of a threat they are. Sometimes they were treated as a total joke but other times they were a very serious force to reckon with. TotK definitely made them more of a joke than anything which I suppose makes sense.

I think I liked how they were handled in Age of Calamity best. They were still silly, but also managed to be a genuine threat and have some interesting story beats around them.
