Some people will give a product or service they're perfectly happy with 4 stars and reserve 5 stars for only the most exceptional experiences. Others basically use a binary scale of only 1 or 5 star ratings. We need to better define the system as a civilization and teach it at a young age

The star rating system being ambiguous is the point. Most products end up falling in a similar high rated areaand thus look appealing to the consumer.

I think this is more about people being more likely to review something they feel strongly one way or the other about rather than leaving no room for grey.

Also the content of the review is more important than the score itself.

You're never going to have a well-defined 5 point scale across all of civilization. Aim for 3 at most.

For customer survey reviews this is objectively false. Companies demand perfect scores across the board. A glowing 4-star review is literally viewed the same as a 0 while a no text 5-star review is perfect.

Yeah, you're right. I was thinking to the consumer.

Here's what's REALLY stupid - people leaving a service review on a product page, ie complaining about shipping speed/mishandling on a retailer's page for a product, thus bringing down the score for the product itself.

Can confirm.

Had a job before where they expected two thirds of your customer surveys to be perfect scores across the board. If you didn't, that's just one of the many metrics they would hold against you ranging from a "coaching opportunity" to grounds for a write-up. No amount of quoting your other surveys' reviews -- or even quoting the same surveys' glowing reviews, or pointing to the recordings of the interactions to confirm what happened -- none of it mattered compared to the metric. Yeah, your one-up might look at those things for other reasons to pick away at you, but they do not work as a defense in a survey that's mostly 5/5 but you got a 4/5 for not being able to solve their problem. Even if their problem is their Facebook account was hacked and you go above and beyond what your actual job training is to try to help, nope, doesn't matter. Same if they straight-up misrepresent the interaction in the review -- doesn't matter.

Companies encourage you to have your best interactions leave a survey and to minimize your worst interactions from considering a survey. From there, all you can do is hope the number-averaging gods are kind because they do not care about anything beyond the metric, even when they hold the proof that the metric is not accurate or enough.

And the middle one is neutral, which is effectively like not voting at all, so you can remove that

Oops, you invented thumbs up/down

You need neutral to accompany written reviews. You know how many Steam reviews say "I wish there was a neutral option"?

Why? They've given thought to good and bad factors and weighed them against each other. They may have insight that would be informative to readers.

Need at least four stars. Neutral is fine so I prefer five, but I at least want hate/dislike/like/love options.

They haven't thought enough if they can't decide a simple leaning direction. If they really weighed it, one side would be heavier. What's are the chances that a coin flip lands on its edge? Or rather, given that someone claims that their coin flip landed on the edge, what's the chance they are BSing? I'm not saying it's 100% BS, just like 99% BS.

Is it useful to the reader to require classifying the 40-60% range (for instance) as "good" or "bad" by gut impulse?
