Porch Pals being the episode of Itchy & Scratchy after there were many complaints about the show being violent, then the kids stopped watching and went to play outside resulting in Itchy & Scratchy going back to violent normality. Only modern day Simpsons is heading towards Porch Pals and wont be returning to the way it once was. It can still be mean spirited. One episode had Marge being outright abused at a new job. A Serious Flanders also exists. I'm pretty ambivalent to the whole strangling thing. Simpsons was, at least to me, supposed to be counter-culture. Part of its charm was that it was shocking and edgy. A parody of saccharine family sitcoms that plagued the era. But it got too big and became the mainstream. And then shows like Family Guy became mainstream and started having scenes where; in an effort to be shocking and edgy, will have Stewie give birth to a litter of puppies with Brian and then they all melt into horrifying goo creatures or whatever. Ironically Simpsons can become countercultural again just by being a normal, if dysfunctional family. And it weirdly seems that's the trend they're leaning into. --- Others don't get to dictate what's normal and what isn't.
