Those reminders are so easy to ignore.

If they really want to save kids they need to have the car sense weight and movement while turned off and then have that trigger the alarm

Sadly, enough kids have died due to parental stupidity that such a device was deemed necessary.

What would actually be a legitimately good feature is a sensor in the car that detects if there is someone left in the car while it's off and the temperature inside becomes too hot, then the AC automatically turns on.

Seems every year there is atleast one case of a kid being left in a car during summer and dying of heat.

They aggregate you opening the rear door, the weight added to the seat, and the seat belt
being buckled to let you know that something is back there when you open your front door.

It would have to turn the engine on if you actually want the AC to do anything and to not kill the battery.

I wouldn't call it dumb per se. Plenty of people get into this mode where they're rushing too much and start forgetting things. Some people are also just forgetful in general, especially with things like ADHD. It's a good reminder that has the potential to save kids, so I'm all for it. And it probably doesn't cost manufacturers much, so it's pretty much become standard in new cars.

Rushing + the sleep deprivation that goes along with having a baby will do it.

Then have the engine start up as well I suppose, but keep the doors locked and/or disable the car's throttle to prevent car theft. Cars are modern and advanced enough these days to facilitate something like this I imagine.

For EVs, a feature like this would be even easier to implement.

What.

Forgetting your kid in the car is an EXTREME example of stupidity. Its not like forgetting a grocery bag or purse in a car.

Same only mine is 11. I was diagnosed with ADHD as a kid myself.

Even on sleepless nights where I was up for over 36 hours straight, never once did I come remotely close to ever forgetting him.

Maybe it's wrong of me to apply my experiences and standards to everyone else, but fuck it that's what I'm doing anyway.

It's not about the added costs. The only reason car manufacturers don't install these kinds of fail-safes is they don't want the liability.

Imagine if it failed to trigger and a child dies from it, the negligent parent can basically push all responsibility to the manufacturer.

Well yes, it is. Obviously the severity of the situation is different, but it's similar to when someone complains about some game breaking glitch in a game and you responding, "it must be your fault because I've never had that glitch". Just because it never happened to you does not mean it wouldn't happen to someone else in other situations.

You could also argue that it is entirely irresponsible to be driving your young child around, or even just driving in general, after having not slept for 36 hours.

At my old job I worked with adults with disabilities. A similar company in NYC had a client left in the van who died, so the state required post trip inspections (including signatures) to ensure no one was left in a vehicle each trip.

I don't know how you forget about the people who are in your care.

This. I've forgotten plenty of things when I'm tired or in a hurry. So while I've forgotten my son before, I can totally understand how it might happen.

It is stupidity 100%. Why are you making excuses for these kind of people? Im tired is not an excuse for your child possibly dying because you forgot
