Looking back over this thread, I see some great progress, but I also see people worrying about a couple pounds too much. That can be water weight. I know I tend to move around by about 3 pounds day-to-day when it is impossible for that to happen (a pound is 3,500 calories). So don't worry about a pound or two, as long as you can graph it everyday and the "line of best fit" keeps slowly going down.

Also, I hope everything is okay cjsdowg, with the heart defect.

Well, that is your problem. Have the drink after. You might have a little less energy, but running on an empty stomach will force you to burn more fat

Running alone, or any steady state cardio that you can do for a long period of time, is likely to mentally burn you out fast. Youre going to resent it and it will begin to feel like a chore rather than something you look forward to. It also can be horrible for your knees unless youre conscious of each and every step, which lets face it, the average person is not. Most will start running flat footed when they get tired, or run heel-toe, and this is going to do unnecessary long term damage to your knees and even your hips.

Power walk if youre going to do long distance cardio (dont underestimate a long and hard power walk) or sprint 30-45 seconds at a time.

I personally went about 5 years dreading riding my exercise bike, or running when I finally got a treadmill, and when I finally discovered strength training I gave that shit up and never looked back. I do my cardio in other ways now, like high intensity (meaning as high intensity as possible for yourself) jumping lunges and other such things. I saw more progress in my first year of athletic strength training than I did in 5 years of bullshit ass cardio that I dreaded every day. Im talking the moment I got up I would think ugh I have to run later and my day wasnt stress free until I got that out of the way.

Some people love running, but not me. No more than like 5 minutes a day anyway. I used to do 30 mins every day. If you struggle finding the motivation, try something else.

I started spending more and more time on the treadmill and got bored so now I do it for less time but at a high level of incline so I burn the same calories.

Watch out for your joints doing that.

Yeah I did it gradually. I do 3.3 mph and start around 7 incline, moving up every few minutes to around 12?

Did 1.6 miles with an incline around like... 7-12 or so.

I don't mind the treadmill because I play Marvel Snap as I go. Lol

I just did a workout, but it was not satisfying. But my heart just wasn't in it. I felt like I was doing it mechanically. I think the reason was the mess in my work out room. I lost my watch, which monitors my heart condition. And I tore up the room looking for it. And since really hurts to walk I didn't clean it up. So I was working out in a messy room. And I hate messy stuff so I think that impacted my mental. I really need to find that damn watch.

Feeling better today, cjsdowg?

My scale says 178 today, which would make me happy but maybe just dehydrated from the big workout yesterday. We'll see in the coming days.

I just two sets of pushups - 40 and 25 (got exhausted on second set)

Also, two sets of crunches of 30 each (actually 10 normal, 10 to the right and 10 to the left)

Now eating a mix of brown rice, black beans, 2 eggs and sriracha

Thanks for asking. I called in sick today so I am not driving any place that is a good. I found my watch my mom had it in her purse. I think I gave it to her when I went to get a heart scan. And just never got it back. So I have to wait for her to get it back. But overall I am bit better. I have spent my sick day trying to clean up. I know when I get everything cleaned up I will feel better.

And I was able to play with my Lizard, he normally comes out when I am at work. So I never get to see him lol. So I have box of dirt just setting there.

I had a bad Sunday and was around 308 Monday morning. Had a good workout and a decent day diet wise yesterday and went back to 305.

Keep at it! As I mentioned yesterday, you can't actually go up or down 3 real pounds in a day. That is water weight fluctuation. So don't beat yourself up every time it goes up.

The best way to calculate is to weigh every day first thing in the morning and average all 7 days for a weekly weight. That should get rid of the fluctuations.

Whew, uhhhh, mostly unhealthy things, my main diet consists of either 6/7 hotdogs for a meal a day, or a dominos pizza, 6/7 slices, or that stuffed pretzel crust pizza from little caesers, those are the main things i eat, sometimes burger king, but yeah, generally fast food since i dont want to give that up!

Yep! But to counteract that i do 2-3 hours of somewhat intense eliptical stuff at the gym, every day
other than that, thats my diet as far as me actually eating

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

I'm really picky, have the palate of a child, i love chicken, but only when its fried or in nugget form, cant eat rotisserie for some reason, just dont like it, dont really eat any veggies or go out of my way to eat them, I'd eat corn/peas, but thats it

Sounds like only one meal a day? That is under 2000 calories with huge intermittent fasting. That plus heavy exercise could do it.

But seriously man, you need to change your diet because you can be in shape but terribly unhealthy.

You're right, my meals are generally anywhere from 1700-2300 calories, and its one a day, as far as getting other nutrients and stuff i take multivitamins, and Iron gummies at the start of each day, so that my body isnt completely shutting down

I just know that as your body gets older it starts getting really picky about the type of food you eat. I had to increase my fiber a lot and cut down on plain starch because it was making my cholesterol go too high. For instance I had to switch from white rice to brown rice.

We were trained to believe that things like eggs raises your cholesterol but that is dietary cholesterol. Your cholesterol is more likely to go up from crap like white bread, white rice, and pasta.

I never had these problems until after 40

Hey guys. I guess I'll be joining in too if that's ok. I've known for a while that I was gaining weight, but I didn't really want to admit it.

My problem is probably my total lack of physical activity. Like, I don't ever really do anything. Have a desk job, video games and movies are my main hobbies. I've noticed that a lot of the time I'll go days with almost no activity.

So, hopefully this topic will inspire me to get off my lazy butt and get in shape again. I see you all are doing great, and that makes me happy.

Hi Koga! Welcome

My main advice would be to just go for daily walks, even if just half an hour. 2 miles is 200 calories. People don't realize how much of a difference 200 calories a day makes. 200 * 365 / 3500 (how many calories are in a pound) = 21 pounds a year. 200 calories of exercise a day is easy, and that is even before watching what you eat or higher levels of exercise.

I would also advise getting a set of dumbbells if you don't want to join a gym. With dumbbells and your own body, you can easily do pushups, sit ups/crunches, lunges, squats, bicep curls, shoulder lifts, etc. Add a weight bench and you can do chest press, flies, tricep curls, etc. Just 30 minutes for 3 times a week can make a huge difference. And maybe just some pushups on some days in between.

Others can give better at-home lifting advice than me, but these are some relatively basic ideas.

100 calories / mile for walking and about 130 for running are kind of guidelines but weight and speed is a factor. I know when I was closer to 200 pounds, running a mile was about 140 calories, so it dropped by close to 10 calories/mile after losing 20 pounds.

I used to be able to go for a walk on our property. We have 11.5 acres, and a creek that circles our field. So it was easy to just go walk around and follow the creek. Iirc one lap around was about half a mile or so.

But dad took in a horse. That thing is mean as heck. You can't go in the field without it attacking. So, that's out of the question now. The road I live in isn't exactly safe for walks either.

Recently I've just been walking a lot more at work. There's a nice hallway on the ground floor and I've been making myself pace it back and forth. Better than nothing I guess.

I would recommend going on hikes instead then. Drive somewhere nearby and walk like 3 or 4 miles. Unlikely you can do that everyday, but 3x a week would be great.

I really need to start going on hikes more often again. My wife and I used to go like once a week. Now it is pretty rare :(
