George RR Martin did an author event with author Cassandra Claire of The Mortal Instruments series. She was talking about the prospect of her book coming out in March 2025 and apparently someone in the audience complained. Then George said "that still may beat Winds of Winter, who the hell knows."

Just say youre done with it.

I know you're joking, but he has released a couple chapters of Winds years ago. I don't think we'll ever see the finished product, though.

While I understand he isn't obligated to work on books/storylines based off the behest of his audience, I also just don't get why he seems to intentionally drag it out and not work on it. It almost seems like he does it to keep the meme going and his fans pissed.

You'd think an author who wanted this to be his masterpiece would at least work towards an ending, even if the ending isn't everything he envisioned, it'd still serve better than him dying from natural causes with only books 5/7 done.

He's done with the whole thing already. He's just waiting to have it posthumously released because he can't handle criticism at this point, especially after D&D intentionally fucked off the show and put a whole new level of pressure on him to deliver something worthwhile.

Because those chapters were cut out of A Dance with Dragons. ADWD's chapters were in turn cut out of A Feast for Crows.

Dude has literally not written a complete book in over two decades.

I highly doubt that. Game of Thrones, the show, already established his power to do more like when he created a prequel storyline about the Targs and people watched that. Finishing the series wouldn't mean he couldn't milk it anymore, it would just give him more opportunities to do even more with it.

At this rate he's going to be known similar to the Wheel of Time author whose reputation is most infamous for dying before he could finish the series.

I know that aspect of him far more than I do any detail of his story.

I don't think he's saying George is not finishing the series to milk it. I think he's saying that George has no intention of finishing the book, but pretends he is to stay relevant.

I seriously think he trying to pull a "tragic author passes away before finishing his masterpiece" gambit so he can have people speculating on how it could have ended forever, like many classic authors. Never mind that for that to have impact, the author has to have still been writing, not fucked off for a decade.

Except Robert Jordan actually wrote his damn books, with the longest gap being 4 years because he fucking died from a sudden serious medical condition. He knew that was a possibility and laid out plans for the series to be finished by someone else with as many notes as he could leave behind. Anyone that would actually compare Robert Jordan and GRRM dying without finishing their works is a fucking moron.

Seriously. Jordan vetted Sanderson hard, worked with him extensively while he was still alive, and prepared the hell out of him to finish the series if/when he died.

Martin meanwhile has loudly and adamantly maintained that there will be no ghost writer; if he dies, the story goes down with him.

I'd argue the bigger, most glaring omission from the show is Lady Stoneheart.

That says, everyone knows that when people refer to "the books will end the same way as the show," they're referring to Mad Queen Dany sacking King's Landing and getting killed hy Jon. Thatmore than any other point is what got people pissed at the show's ending.

And to be fair, that is absolutely going to happen. Reading the books, I was calling that one as early as Storm of Swords, maybe even Clash. The key difference is that the books have already done a much better job setting that up, as opposed to D&D who literally ignored all the setup in favor of hero-complex white-savior BS until literally the 11th hour.

Thats not really a fair comparison though. Robert Jordan was fairly consistent in releasing the books and wanted to finish but got sick and passed before he could.

I dont think its fair to compare his situation to Martins.

I agree with you.

Hell, even in the show I never agreed about that particular aspect of the ending sucking. At the end of the day, no matter what Dany did on Essos, she was a temperamental child acting mostly on emotion, armed with nuclear weapons. Freeing slaves and uniting warring clans is all well and good, but essos was 100% a might-makes-right culture, and she was acting with the biggest guns anyone had. She was convinced of her own righteousness, and at the end of the day, for all her talk of a fair world, her "grand plan" was always, from beginning to end, to just ride into Westeros and start torching everybody who disagrees with her. That was literally her solution to every problem. And that worked on Essos because literally everybody there falls in line behind the strongest person, for one reason or another. But considering everybody in Westeros' last memory of the Targaryens was the mad king doing EXACTLY THAT, things were only ever gonna go one way.

If anything, the part D&D handled the worst was just having Jon immediately fall for her for no goddamn reason. I mean, by that point she'd done nothing but massacre her way up the countryside and demand everybody swear lifelong fealty oaths. Yet somehow Jon is convinced she's some revolutionary savior? Not inly that, but he's convinced to throw away the wishes of his people, his family, and the freedom his countrymen have been fighting for for years, just for auntie-sex? I don't usually use the word "simp" as an insult, but God damn, son.

I have no doubt the story as written by Martin would be LEAGUES better that the hackneyed rush-job we got in the show. Assuming it ever got made. Which it will not be.

That was a fine place to subvert expectations, a lot of unexpected things can happen in the chaos of a battle, but their execution sucked. Arya killing the Night's King once you set him up as the final overarching antagonist works fine, but she needed to do it like a faceless assassin not a random action hero. Instead of leaping over his army to get to him it would've made more sense for her to wait in the tree like an assassin and let him come to her.
