But you should want the Diamondbacks to be spending more money. They clearly have some good players. It would be much more interesting if they supplemented that by signing players.

not spending money and being a bad to mediocre team who flukes into the world series is more admirable or w/e

We've paid the fuck out of Marte and rookie Carroll, and gave Kelly a solid two year deal. Gallen is the only truly outstanding star to pay here, and I will legit be angry if we don't pay him. Moreno has probably earned it, great rookie year.

Oh right, I forgot we paid Madbum a fuckton. Lmfao.

I'm primarily for developing players and then paying them with free agency and trades as a supplement (ie, what we've largely done), rather than vomiting money at big names and trying to outright buy a championship.

A fan of a small market team in favor of taking the Rays approach to improving, rather than having to outbid a team in our division that has four times our net worth and another at three times? What a crazy idea, right.

Also speaking of the Rays, holy shit I hope you keep this same energy when it comes to them.

That got a little dicey near the end, but a win is a win. Rangers up 3-1 and still undefeated on the road. Has a team ever won the World Series without losing a single road game the whole way? Or would the Rangers be the first? EDIT: Someone on r/baseball informed me that the 2005 White Sox also did it. I double-checked and that is correct. I don't know if they're the only ones, but that's at least one that I know did it for sure.

i admire what the rays and orioles do but acknowledge its bad for baseball. also they were good in the regular season unlike the dbacks which makes it a slightly easier pill to swallow if they make runs.

None of this year's LCS teams are small market. Dallas / Fort Worth / Arlington is the 4th largest metro area in the US, Houston is #5, Philadelphia #7 and Phoenix #10. Phoenix is also the 5th largest city in the country, between Houston and Philly. It might not be a great baseball market (just as I'm sure DFW is many times over more Cowboys country than Rangers), but it's certainly not a small one.

I've never really understood the criticism of "buying a championship". First of all, even if you do spend a fuckton of money the World Series is still hard to win and the playoffs are still a crapshoot. Further, most teams these days put a very great emphasis on player development, so ideally you're going to have a mix of homegrown players, good free agent signings, and good trades. If all of that results in you having a top 5 payroll, then I don't see what's so bad about that.

Throwing money around doesn't always result in titles. Look at Baltimore. They had the third-smallest payroll in the majors this season, yet still managed to top 100 wins. (Now if only they could work on their pitching staff....)

the only way to remove cheap teams from existing is total overhaul to player compensation. why has player development become the most important thing for every well-run organization? because players make no fucking money early on in their career, so churning out cheap young stars and contributors at an enormous surplus is the key to sustaining winning on a budget.

Aaron Judge as a rookie was an MVP runner-up and his salary that season was league minimum. exploiting this is the job of every top executive in these front offices, it's why the free agent market has dried up in recent years except for true superstars, who are always worth paying (unless you're the Red Sox). paying market value for merely good and aging players is just not worth it for most teams, and any system where paying actual fair value to workers is discouraged is a broken one

the closest thing to a compromise that teams are actually doing is these early extensions like the aforementioned Corbin Carroll one, but even these are still extremely team-friendly like 80% of the time, and in some cases like the Ozzie Albies or Ronald Acuna deals they are outright robbery

See, I pretty much agree with most of this. I'm not against players getting paid, especially from the outset. I would not be against something forcing teams to pay the players more; raised league min or salary floor or something, as well as increased focused on player retention (fuck do I wish the D-backs were better about that one).

Maybe I'm just jaded, though, because the overwhelming feeling I get after 25 years of watching this team is just that the playing field is too unlevel when it comes to free agency, to the point that as soon as any of our stars are approaching the end of their contract, I assume they're just going to be gone because we (and poorer teams in general) can't compete. Just in recent years, losing JD Martinez to the Red Sox and AJ Pollock to the Dodgers just really drove that home, as well as trading away Goldschmidt.

But even with that, I don't oppose players getting paid in free agency, or want a cap of any sort to that. I just simply see how teams like the Rays run things as the way for poorer teams to actually be able to compete.

So, tl;dr, I don't agree that lower payroll teams that do well through the farm system and trades and whatnot is inherently bad for baseball like you and Zithers have been saying, but I do agree that players deserve to be paid more than they are, and wish we would. I'm going to be pissed if we let Gallen walk after this season, but I'm largely expecting it to happen.
