Baseball fans want to be like soccer fans. Team with best regular season is the champion

or you could just pick the division winners and one wildcard team and have them battle. like how it used to be. pretty simple and good format.

zips has debuted with the rangers having a 51.8% chance of winning which sounds about right

the highest a win % for a 7 game series can be is realistically like 65% and that's only if you have the best team ever vs the worst team ever

i don't have a favorite team. i just hate cheap skate owners and don't think we should encourage teams to not spend to win. not sure how you got brainwashed into thinking not spending is good for your team or baseball in general. but i find that very sad. please reconsider your stance.

as far as dbacks vs cardinals they had the same record basically (cards with 1 less game)

dbacks 84-78
dbacks had a 97 wrc+ which ranked 18th
dbacks had an era- of 102 which ranked 20th
dbacks had a fip- of 103 which ranked 22nd

cardinals 83-78
cards had a 98 wrc+ which ranked 13th
cards had an era- of 104 which ranked 24th
cards had a fip- of 108 which ranked 27th

cardinals way worse at pitching and a hair better at hitting. hmm. think i might go with cardinals being worse.
Teams can underperform for parts of the year lilbro. They still had many of the pieces from the previous years lilbro.

Stats don't lie, but looking at stats for one period can really mislead lilbro.

that's actually true for a team like the phillies, who were a whatever team at the beginning of this season without Harper but have been a very good team since

the dbacks are not like that at all. they are a paper thin on depth-team with a couple stars. the fact that they're starting players like Emmanuel Rivera everyday while starting Brandon Pfaadt for multiple must win games this postseason and bringing in arms like Andrew Saalfrank for high leverage outs is proof of that

what pieces? jason marquis and mark mulder had 280 innings between them with a 6.02 and 7.14 era. aaron miles, david eckstein, and yadier molina were not good hitters and never had been, each having a wrc+ under 87 while combining for 1500 PAs. they had a worse record in the 2nd half compared to the 1st half so it isn't like they made awesome deadline trades to boost them.

they were not a good team.

wainwright was also still pitching out of the pen for the cards in 06

the starters the Cards ran out for that postseason were Chris Carpenter, Jeff Suppan, Jeff Weaver, and some dude named Anthony Reyes. outside of Carpenter, that is a very bad rotation. Of note, Suppan was a durable but not particularly effective back end innings eater that was their number 2 starter. Jeff Weaver was washed up at this point, and Anthony Reyes was a literal who that completely washed out of the majors not even 3 years later

Pfft, Soup was fine.

All they needed was to get to 5 runs every night, and stay ahead long enough for the Jason Isringhausen High Wire Extravaganza to take over at the end of the game, and they usually did exactly that.

not really. i've been thinking of creating a new one since i quit my old one that i commish'd. i have like ten people interested but probably won't get around to it until next year (i am in the process of prepping to move cross country and finding a new job so no time for ootp).

old league has some openings if you want in tho. its a 40 team fictional worldwide league. just entered free agency after its... 8th season i think? pretty slow sims, 4 days per day (longer in offseason), low injuries. not super fast and you can afford to miss some exports. they just added draft pick trading. coaching/scouting turned on. idk what else. oh you get participation points you can spend on perks like changing park factors or boosting a prospect's personality

I've never actually been in an online league, but I'm very experienced with the game.

I've been playing for about seven years, though not as much this year. The whole NPB fiasco kind of killed my interest, as it really messed up a save I had been running for those seven years.

I was a long time player of The Show, but always enjoyed the off season stuff more than actually playing the games. I discovered OoTP and never looked back.

yeah the NPB stuff was lol. just using unlicensed shit forever. NPB still works on 21 or 22 i think before getting scrambled into south african stuff. will miss seeing roki sasaki ball out every save

i just started my first expansion save which i thought would be a fun challenge but i beat the twins in a game 163 to win the AL central in our very first season to capture the 2 seed.... and now my owner is just giving me lots of money to spend and its like im immediately cruising to being a competitor already. oh well.

Good article on the viewership problem with MLB. I can see how ratings were spectacular years ago when there wasn't as much competition, but now the vast majority of people couldn't care less about watching the World Series.

https://www.cnn.com/2023/10/27/sport/baseball-world-series-viewership-problem-spt-intl/index.html

This year, World Series viewership will likely not greatly exceed 10 million or half of what it was 30 years ago. It certainly wont come anywhere close to the approximately 30 million to 40 million that watched the Fall Classic during the late 1970s and into the 1980s.

The changing of the television guard lines up well with what were seeing in the polling. Consider a recent Washington Post survey that asked Americans about their favorite sport to watch. Baseball came in at 9% behind football (34%) and basketball (12%). Thats one of the lowest percentages ever recorded for baseball, and its well down from the north of 30% of Americans who said it was their favorite sport to watch in the middle of the 20th century.

I just cant get into baseball anymore. As a kid I watched MLB games non-stop, but as an adult I could barely get through a game in the Rangers-Astros series. I ended up just switching to the Monday night football game and watching that instead. Even though I grew up a massive rangers fan I just cant watch the MLB anymore, but I hope they win.

Baseball is the only sport I enjoy watching. I'll occasionally watch football, but it doesn't provide anywhere near the same entertainment value. That said, it's hard to watch even 100 games of baseball a season, let alone 162+.

I think game time is also another major issue for me. I enjoyed watching the earlier rounds of this year's playoffs because the games were on at reasonable times. I start work at 5:30 or 6 every morning, so 8 PM start times just doesn't work at all for me.

Gallen's already up to 70 pitches and he's not even out of the 3rd. Even if he gets out of this inning with the game still tied and no more damage, the Rangers have a ton of momentum already.

Jeff_AKA_Snoopy posted...
Viewership numbers are also weird in the sense that so many people don't have cable anymore.

But one of the biggest reasons that the people who still have cable do still have cable is so they can access their regional sports networks and watch their local sports teams without the games being blacked out on MLB TV or similar services. Baseball in particular relies far more on RSN's and less on nationally televised games than the other sports, so if anything, the increase in cord-cutters should affect baseball less than other sports.
