The only reason for that is that you get to see your arrow fly through the air and hit something, as opposed to bullets, which just disappear. We had archery and shooting (with BB rifles), and I was never really good at archery at all (and thus didn't really enjoy it), but I was pretty good at shooting and enjoyed it way more. Ironically, years later (in the 90s) I got much better at archery, by essentially doing it "wrong" (holding the bow sideways).
