If a handful of Republicans were willing to oust McCarthy for working with Democrats to keep the government open, then the vast majority would be willing to oust him for making such a deal with Democrats, which is likely why he refused to take such a deal. If the deal was all Democrats and only a couple of Republicans are working together to elect a speaker, then that Speaker should be a Democrat. We'll keep voting Jeffries and when they decide they want to get shit done, they can join us or get their act together.

Please don't get your hopes up for Jeffries or any Democrat to become Speaker during this Congress. Yes, it's technically possible if enough GOP members are absent or vote present during a round of voting but they know that as well as you and I do and they know the Republican base would be furious with them if they let that happen.

Well then it's a shame for McCarthy that it only mattered coming from him. I wouldn't doubt some of the 18 or so Repubs in Biden-won districts would be secretly seeking their help in an effort to prevent their party seeming more dysfunctional considering their seats are at the highest risk, however I definitely wouldn't want the Dems to even consider helping McCarthy keep his seat without some heavy concessions written into the rules so not dependent upon him honoring his word, and he was adamantly against that.

Yup. And ultimately a non-functioning House hurts us all and wastes over 1/4 of Biden's first term. Which is why if a Republican is willing to give Dems concessions to be a moderate speaker (no Hastert Rule, can be removed if 30% of the House requests it....high enough bar to block the crazies but low enough that Dems can oust him if he betrays his word, no blocking appointments/nominations, etc...), I hope they will take the deal. Because Republicans would rather the House do nothing for 15 months than give a Democrat power.

I still don't even understand why the House needs a fucking Speaker, though. If it's got the votes, send it to the floor for debate. Shit's not hard.

Speaker has too much power, but thats not changing anytime soon.

Senate does appointments. House is just needed to pass actual laws, and if the GQP decides theyd rather do nothing thatll be true whether they pick a Speaker or dont. Not picking a Speaker at least highlights their dysfunction.

If the math is we need 5 moderates for Jeffries and they need 10 to 20 Dems to put up a moderate that likes to maintain Qanon relations then fuck them. No deal. Dems helping them elect someone is as absurd as them helping us.

Once again, why should the Dems help the Republicans out of the mess the Republicans created?
