lol wut? McCarthy has lied repeatedly directly to Democrats. Why would they support a piece of shit who can't be trusted?
I don't support any republicans. My question was from a position of ignorance. I wasn't being rhetorical. The reason has been well explained throughout the thread.

You were literally in a topic earlier this year "just speculating" that Trump "might" actually have proof there was election fraud, and your "speculation" was all what amounted to "Biden is so bad I can't imagine how he won."

Such as here:
I don't know the context of what you're posting but it sounds like I'm saying that Biden's speeches are boring and Trump's are insane.

Which in no way means Biden is worse than Trump.

Reads like a NYT Pitchbot.

Anyway, you vote McCarthy out because he sucks as a human being. If given a chance to vote the next person out, they'll do so. Democrats owe Republicans absolutely nothing, especially with how Republicans have acted for the last 8 decades.

You were attempting to use it as reasoning for why it was "possible" Trump actually might have proof of election fraud/might have actually won. You were saying things like that ("Atleast I watched a Trump SotU, I would never watch a Biden one") and other things to try to push the idea that Biden is so bad there's no way he won. That's why you said "I'm just speculating."

Yup. This should be a wakeup call that Dems don't have to compromise with Republicans. Just let them cannibalize themselves and take advantage of the opportunity when it presents itself.

tl;dr: it could, but its uncharted territory so its unclear

but the law that created the pro tempore position gives the temporary speaker all the powers of the actual speaker so theoretically they could just treat him as the speaker

McCarthy is absolutely unworthy of leadership. And there are too many "Moderate Republicans" who will not vote for Gaetz or anyone in his camp. It will be the same circus as when McCarthy originally won his term. We'll eventually end up with some "moderate Republican" that Democrats can stomach but at least that person won't have made ridiculous concessions to the far right wing like McCarthy did.

Without support from Gaetz you can't get elected. And Gaetz won't vote for anyone who will compromise.

The house is going to go on for weeks without a speaker.

Just seems like incredibly risky political calculus to help the extreme sect of their party oust the speaker for the smallest form of bipartisan cooperation, when the same important issue looms in like 40 days.

I mean, if you have no issues with an extended goverment shutdown that will be devastating for millions of people, then I suppose I understand being flippant about it.

McCarthy made it clear that he wasn't willing to make concessions to the Democrats in order to preserve his speakership and then went on the morning shows to blame them for the near shutdown.

The end result of this isn't "Gaetz becomes speaker" and it's unlikely that anyone his group puts forth will have enough the support of the rest of the GOP. So they have to pick someone who can pick up a few Dem votes, which may or may not stave off shutdown.

I think you've baked in that McCarthy being speaker wouldn't have shut down the government in November and I don't think that's guaranteed.

Yes, Republicans in purple areas can't afford to be MAGA crazy, doing do could get them removed. So they are unlikely to vote for someone more extreme then McCarthy.

Democrats are playing a dangerous game and are hoping republicans sabotage themselves.
