It is practically impossible to participate in western society and have never heard a Taylor Swift song. You may not have known you were hearing one but you have.

Look cocytus.... I knew you were trouble. Don't blame me if you have a blank space in your memory because you've definitely heard one of her songs. Only in your wildest dreams did you avoid that. Stop being the anti-hero, shake it off, and admit you have heard a song or two from her. It's all too well to be so cool that you think you never heard a song of her. I'm not trying to make any bad blood between us, but look what you made me do.

I know this might be hard for you guys to believe, but this is what I'm saying. She is so overhyped that people think it's impossible to have never heard one of her songs. But I have not.

You need to calm down. It must have been a cruel summer to not hear any Taylor Swift songs at all! The man is fearless to be able to speak up like this, so he's a better man than you and he has a perfectly good heart. Don't blame me for saying all of this though. I know the kind of pain he's in all too well.

But OP's not out of the woods yet. I'm sure he'll forever & always hear more about Taylor Swift and her lover.

Hard to compare. The way we listen to music now is so different. MJ obviously ain't gonna put up the same streaming numbers as TSwizzle.

But also due to streaming in part, MJ was everywhere for everyone. Nowadays anyone can kinda just ignore stuff they don't wanna listen to and only stream their own favs. Probably harder to avoid MJ back in the day that it is to avoid TSwift today.

Its really not that hard to miss popular music. One can easily be not conscious or aware of those background songs in stores and on the road unless the person recognizes the song. I also dont believe Ive heard Taylor Swift in any of those settings with one exception. The one exception was a froyo place I worked at, and I thumbed down Swifts music when it came up so the Pandora channels stopped playing her music.

Is what it is. Modern music is just the over produced and radio-friendly stuff like Swift and her ilk, and it's gotten worse over the years. But there's no signs showing that this formula will disappear.

He was also did not tour as widely as Swift.

It's very difficult to make an absolutely fair comparison, but in the context of their times, they are both at the top.

Every generation will put their idols above the current ones. In years to come, people will be saying, 'ah, Taylor Swift, now that was real music, not like your shitty over produced Gen Beta crap. I can't even name one of their songs!'

Anyone think that the Motown production line wasn't overproduced and radio friendly? How about anything produced by Phil Spector?

Sure, but at least then, it was music with actual substance, made by actual bands who write and create their own music, more or less. Every top hit these days is 100% the product of a producer or phantom song-writer that have distilled a pop hit down to a science. It's basically the lifeless and inorganic K/J-Pop model, but with the illusion of authenticity.

That's always been the case. But the top hits, the stuff that dominates the Top 40, is not. Hence this topic and my point. Just like Swift becomes a cultural norm and dominates the charts and attention for a reason.

That's hardly true. Plenty of songs, especially in each era's version of the "pop" genre, have had ghost writers and been written by committee for decades.

No it wasn't.

There were songwriting teams and session musicians playing on the records back in the 1950s. And ever since.

Tin Pan Alley, The Brill Building, The Wrecking Crew, Holland Dozier Holland, Leiber and Stoller, Goffin and King, Bacharach and David.
