we might be getting a dog which is exciting

how do you convince the dog not to eat wires

also any other advices are welcome

but also you don't leave wires out in the first place.

If not an option they sell wire coverings that supposedly work.

I think you have to piss on the wires to assert dominance

we kind of just lucked out with our dog's personality. if it's a puppy then watching it like a hawk for the first few weeks might help establish base rules

Insurance, IMO. Get it early on.

For puppies, do not give them too much freedom or theyll get into stuff that they shouldnt. Get it use to a crate; this is essential. Itll probably whine to try and get out but stick with it. When it grows up you can decide if you want to crate it every night or sleep with you or on a dog bed. But early on crate train!

Have a short leash on them at all times so that you can easily catch them by stepping on the leash or youll be busy chasing them around the house/yard. Dont let the pup eat shit cause it absolutely will.

Stay on top of vaccinations and schedule an appt with a vet as soon as you can.

Butter the wires.

Crate train it ASAP. Theyll start out crying and carrying on, but eventually it will be their actual safe space they go to on their own.

Why would a dog eat wires? We've had 3 dogs and none of them have done that

I've had many dogs, and only one chewed through a wire. It was a live one, too. It was to a lamp we had in the living room. She got a real shock from it, but was otherwise fine, and she never chewed on another wire again. If your dog is a frequent chewer, and not all are, definitely get it used to the idea that the only things it can chew on are the things you give it the chew on. If the dog goes for a wire, scold it very sternly. Then give it something more appropriate to chew on, and perhaps even encourage the dog for chewing on the right thing. Dogs live for love and positive feedback from their humans. So long as you remember that, and the fact that it will always at best have the intelligence of a toddler, you should do fine.

Prepare to get no decent sleep for a week or two if you just adopted a very young dog. It'll be worth it in the end, but the first month of owning a young dog is rough to say the least.
