A lot of deplorable things were said during the Republican debate on Wednesday night, but this comment from Republican candidate Tim Scott may take the cake.

During the debate Scott argued that welfare assistance was harder than slavery for Black Americans.

Black families survived slavery! he exclaimed. We survived poll taxes and literacy tests.

We survived discrimination being woven into the laws of our country, he added, in a line that for a moment sounded like he might actually be acknowledging systemic racism.

What was hard to survive was Johnsons Great Society, where they decided to put moneywhere they decided to take the Black father out of the household to get a check in the mail.

Johnsons Great Society, launched in 1964, was one of the most significant federal social welfare programs in U.S. history. It greatly expanded welfare policy by writing Medicare and Medicaid into U.S. law, increasing Social Security benefits, and generally expanding assistance to the elderly and the poor.

You can just see him rewriting the last bit on the fly "Wait I can't say 'where they gave people money', that would sound good. I'll say something about getting rid of fathers that doesn't make any sense."

He wouldn't last 24 hours in 1823 or hell 1923 South Carolina.

I don't think he's saying it was harder but he is definitely trying to say that improved benefits were something black people had to survive the same way they survived slavery, which is just as bad.

It's like he's playing to the Reagan 'welfare queen' rhetoric, but there aren't many Reaganites anymore. Still, it's probably a popular rant with the MAGA crowd.

And this is why black Republicans are viewed as a joke. Well, Republicans in general are a joke, but minority Republicans especially.

And most of them for no fucking reason. I hate guys like Scott. Black history is a huge issue with me. 1 month is not enough and black history isn't just slavery and Jim Crow. Tons of families were split apart and ruined because of that shit. Black republicans are just traitors to their own race. Remember Sam L Jackson's character in Django? All of em are like him.

The only good thing about Trump in the GOP is the fact that idiots like Tim Scott dead-ended their political careers by running against him.

Scott was trying to differentiate himself from DeSantis, bearing in mind his comments on slavery.

Scott realized he was going a bit too far for a Republican audience, so quickly segued to welfare bashing.

Do you not know that many black families were broken up as part of slavery or...

I also don't know where this idea that welfare was responsible for anything he's claiming is coming from. In that time period redlining was rampant, black people were denied access to a number of government programs and a bunch of centers of black people's wealth were outright destroyed or stolen. It's absolutely despicable to try and distort that history.

Or, without going into/knowing his family history, it's possible a multitude of other things could have been the cause. Like Clarence Thomas, he's clearly got some issues to work through.
