Petition demands expulsion of New Hampshire students accused of sharing and grading photos of female classmates without consent

Some 9th and 10th grade Bedford High School students, in Bedford, New Hampshire, mostly boys, took pictures of 11th and 12th-grade girls buttocks and breasts without their consent, grading them and sharing those with others, according to letters sent to parents Thursday and Friday by High School Principal Robert Jozokos.

One letter sent to parents Thursday and shared with CNN by the Bedford School District, said students involved with this behavior can expect a meeting with parents and a Saturday School, in-suspension, or out-of-school suspension depending on their involvement.

School officials plan to meet with parents and students Monday to make a plan to renew and maintain a safe and respectful environment for students, according to a second letter sent to parents Friday.

According to the letter, a student shared with administrators two pictures that were collages of girls. It revealed all the girls who were photographed were wearing bathing suits, or shorts and tops and none of the photographs was taken from inside the school or on campus.

Administrators spent Friday interviewing approximately 35 male and female students from all grades about the incident, according to the letter.
Some came to us on their own and others we followed up with after learning that they might have additional information, the letter said.

The collages and individual pictures had been shared on Snapchat, a messaging and social networking app, without the girls consent, the letter said.

As of right now, we know two students received images and student reports point to three to five students sharing them, the letter said.
A Change.org petition, created Thursday by a 12th grade female who attends Bedford High School, said the students deserve to be expelled and not suspended.

What has school turned into for these young women? We are not a toy for your son to play with, nor a piece of paper that can be traded like a Pokmon card, the petition said.

The petition, which has more than 2,800 signatures as of Monday afternoon, encourages the Bedford community and beyond to support our protest in the lack of discipline Bedford has demonstrated.

These students have no place in our school, and need to be removed immediately. The damage they have done to our community is irreversible and cannot be compensated in any form other than justice for their disgustingly irresponsible actions, the petition said.

When asked what consequences the students face, Bedford School District Superintendent Michael Fournier said in an email to CNN, Once the investigation is complete, the high school administration determines next steps. As the individual who may hear an appeal, it is important that I maintain objectivity until I am presented with all of the facts,

Administrators contacted parents of the girls who were identified in the photos and any additional girls who might be identified will also be contacted, Jozokos said in the letter. He added police were also updated on the incident.
According to the letter, administrators initially heard reports of physical trading cards of the girls being circulated, but they have not been able to find any trading cards although several students mentioned hearing about them.

We have not seen any images with student names or grades on them, and while we had initially heard that yesterday, we did not hear about that today, the letter said.

The letter said there are some things we are still trying to find out and the investigation is ongoing. Jozokos urged students to come forward if they have any information they can share.

According to the letter, community education advocates and the dean of students will be made available to students Monday.

The Bedford School District stands with all victims of harassment of any kind. We have engaged with community resources to assist both students and families as they need, Fournier said in a District letter sent to parents Friday.

Expulsion for this seems pretty excessive. They deserve some sort of punishment, but not the kind that would set their lives back. Ffs, these are 14-15 year olds, potentionally ruining their future over this is absurd.

Im assuming the asses and breasts were covered by clothes? In that case, punished yes, expelled no.

If they were somehow getting photos of naked breasts and asses without consent Revenge of the Nerds style, yeah, I could see expulsion in that case as theyre technically distributing child pornography.

If they were taking candid photos of the girls and sharing them around, especially on school grounds, then harsh punishment and maybe expulsion could be on the table.

It sounds kind of like they were just sharing photos from social media of the girls in collages around to each other and rating them? If that's the case then they should be punished, but definitely not expelled. I wonder if we will get more information

Boys talking about which classmates they find most attractive is common, but the collage of non-consensual photos is definitely something that needs punishing. Expelling then from school seems a bit much though.

Yeah, this honestly doesn't sound like big deal, really, & something that has probably been happening ever since teens began having such easy, constant, access to cameras. Teens have been rating each other's attractiveness since groups of sexually aware teens have existed, & is basically the original premise for Facebook. I mean, I get being upset about photos you may not consent to, but cameras are everywhere these days; there's plenty of photos of you, that you probably don't consent to.

Agreed. I just don't think expulsion is needed. Heavy punishment, yes.

BTW, I have daughters and I would be super pissed if this happened, and would want way more than a slap on the wrist. But I wouldn't push for expulsion unless this was a repeat occurrence.

You mean like almost everywhere there are sexually aware teens? I hate to be the one to break this to you, but high schools are hormonally charged. If you're attractive, male or female, the school WILL take notice. The difference here, is that social media & smartphones just elevate the whole thing to a more tangible level, than casual comments.

if it's so bad to the point that it's being recognized by school staff then yes they should be expelled. This isn't a group of friends talking about their crushes. This is an organized lobby that's garnered enough attention for a news story. Women should feel safe on campus. Not be used for sex and having their pictures leaked to guys in this lobby so they can rank every women.

I think some sort of suspensions would be a good start.

When I saw "grading female bodies" I wondered, hadn't most of us dudes done some level of that amongst friends in that age.. but yeah distributing photo collages of images acquired without consent is definitely over the top and, hopefully, not typical behavior.

I'm actually kinda open to the idea of expelling them. This warrants severe punishment. How could any of these girls ever feel safe around them again? The perpetrators here have established a hostile and malicious environment that persistently threatens the safety and privacy of the victims in a public place they're required to be. I normally resist the urge to overreact when determining punishments for people and to offer clemency when possible, but this is a very serious deprivation of the victims' rights.

If the kids were taking photos of these girls during school hours and activities, I could understand expulsion. Just doesn't feel like the right way to punish and teach the children about consent and boundaries to just remove them from school when it wouldn't change the fact they could still continue to engage in the behavior since it was not related to them being in school.

While on one hand, I really want to say throw the book at them specifically because sneaky pics were taken, used, exchanged, etc without consent. Like many are saying, this is a big deal. This is the age me and many of my friends became sexually active- and letting behavior like this just get a slap in the wrist is a risky way to allow boys just beginning to act sexually with women think that this kind of thing is normal and women dont need to have their privacy or boundaries respected.
However, and I ABSOLUTELY hate that I even have to consider this- even moreso than don't ruin their lives over it, I am worried that expulsion would plant a seed of misogyny in this group of impressionable boys. Because you know there would be objections from the community, the parents, etc and thats just going to make the boys feel like theyre being severely punished for something obviously not that bad and that is just women sensationalizing things or some bullshit. It may result in them taking this injustice out on women for the rest of their lives. I hate hate hate that that is where my mind goes, but I think its better to do something slightly less severe that wont make so many vocally object, but also harsh enough they know its serious. Idk where that lands with modern school punishments
