28. Slothrust Paralllel Timeline
Indie Rock, Indie Pop
2021

1. Parallel Timeline
2. Once More for the Ocean
3. Cranium

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwgpR9GzXHw

I love the intro to Cranium with that weird vocal sample repeated a bunch of times. Thats a great way to start an album (at least it is for me!). The feel from this first song is dreamy, mysterious rock: floaty vocals, washed out guitars. Actually the entire second half of the song is guitars. Pretty neat! Once More for the Ocean is a solid rock number with those same strong guitars coming in near the end.

Can I just say I really like this singer? Leah Wellbaum has such a unique voice, low in pitch and high in authority. Apropros of nothng but some of these music videos are funny; they seem to just be Wellbaum dicking around in different settings (in the woods) or with various props (fruit). They seem to be serious attempts at artistic statements or something but they come across pretty goofy to me.

I dont have much to say about Parallel Timeline. Its good indie rock that kind of reminds me of 90s and 00s music. Some of the songs arent as ear-catching as others, particularly the slower ones (looking at you, King Arthurs Seatand A Giant Swallow), but the more uptempo numbers are solid. I bet these folks give a hell of a live show.

One of my favorite parts of this ranking has been when the last songs in an album completely surprise me with how much I like them. The last song in Parallel Timeline, also called Parallel Timeline, seems to be about recovery from addiction. I love the earnest storytelling of it, as well as the wordless but vocal last section. Its a wonderful cap to the album.

27. Alice Schach and the Magic Orchestra - SCHACH
J-Pop, Progressive Pop
2021

@Plasman

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_l-7_P5pSWgA0rOawKUr87HAnH6jjPqqPQ

1. Hypnotized
2. Children in the Ashes
3. Kill My Fortune

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgJHVg0Ppjs

My exposure to Alice Schach is through VGMC, and Ive yet to actually hear a song by them that Ive remotely enjoyed. I told Plasman this going in, so please dont be too upset if this pattern continues!

The big thing I dislike about Alice Schach is their vocals and how breathy they are and, additionally, how the audio mixing seems to be imbalanced. NEW GAME seems to press back against that by drowning Alices singing in a big messy metal-y mash. I dont hate it actually. Its more chaotic by design, and I guess I respond better to that. Fushigi Chan is also sort of overwhelming soundscape this is a departure from the bands VGMC appearances, and I have to say I like this way better than the floaty, ethereal stuff.

Kill my Fortune, song 3, is the first song I can say I actually like. Its a nice balance between heavier metal and ethereal pop; the song has probably the perfect balance for me. QUEEN FLY is okay but I dont like it as much as the first three.

Its worth noting that Alice Schach (or specifically Nene Akagawa, who provides the vocals) is singing in a conlang, so not in a real-world language. I generally dont parse out individual foreign languages in songs (sometimes even English sounds foreign) but if you like unique singing, maybe check this album out.

Halfway through the album I probably would take every single one of these songs over Chocolate Missile, quite easily.

Children in the Ashes is my favorite so far. Even though it moves the needle back to the breathy/ethereal setting that I already said I didnt like as much, the production is solid enough that it becomes an engaging experience. Oh but wait, I like Hypnotized even more some nice Middle Eastern flair with heavy rock and dubstep influence. Hypnotized feels like the total Alice Schach package, at least as far as this album is concerned. Urxbxrxs is more of the same, which isnt really a bad thing by this point.

This was a pleasant surprise! As I said, my Alice Schach experience has been less than positive, but I enjoyed a lot of this. Thanks for taking a chance and believing in your album!

Very glad you liked it, and generally didn't expect it to do well enough to get top half lol! But I did think it still had a shot, as it's notedly different (in a less-accessible way, but a way I thought you had a chance of appreciating more) from most of their stuff that's been in contests, and most Alice fans think their output that makes it in rhythm games is kinda eh compared to their whole discography anyhow lol. Hypnotized and Children in the Ashes are probably my favourite songs in the album as well! Though I'd probably have Endorphin in there too. Appreciate the writeup and explanations on your feelings, and I still wanna go back to listen to all the top songs after!

41. Matthew and the Atlas Morning Dancer (Unplugged)

1. Waging a War (Acoustic Version)
2. Tower Above the Sun (Acoustic Version)
3. White Bird (Acoustic Version)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQDaDcnKKtM

[NOTE: I couldn't find the Unplugged version of Morning Dancer on RYM, so "Indie Folk" applies to the normal (Plugged?) version; any additional genres are left to the imagination.]

This falls firmly into singer-songwriter territory. I can often take or leave this sort of music. Ive never been a fan of Bob Dylan but I do like Joni Mitchell. Matthew and the Atlas is billed as the project of Matt Hegarty, and he falls into the Dylan camp because I dont enjoy his voice very much. Its not objectionable (like Dylans) but in the first song, Pyres, I struggle with understanding what hes singing. I even made a conscious effort to pay attention to the lyrics, but I still had trouble parsing what he was saying.

The second song, Waging a War, is much better in that department. I like it considerably more. I love the story it paints of someone rebellious who gets into all sorts of trouble, dancing on your own are they a lost soul, are they acting deliberately, or both? Profoundly sad, unclear, and nostalgic.
I dig the minimalist backing. Heavy on acoustic guitar, with some light strings. I guess it makes sense given the album is labeled Unplugged.

A lot of this album Im ambivalent on. Sometimes the arrangements feel too simple, like Low; sometimes Hegartys voice bothers me, like on Plaything. Other times I dont have those complaints; sometimes Im utterly charmed, like in Tower Above the Sun. Sometimes I think my favorite parts are the parts without any singing. There were multiple times more than three where a song started without me realizing, and I had to replay it from the beginning. Sometimes theres a female singer out of nowhere and the effect is fairly neutral.

Overall, an album I have no strong feelings on, unless you count shrug as a strong feeling. I found nothing objectionable but I wouldnt go out of my way to listen to any of it again. Waging a War is pretty terrific though! I listened to the full (non-acoustic) version and I definitely prefer acoustic.
I was out of town for a few days but love your thoughts on the album. A lot of my taste in music is shrug stuff that evokes a strong emotional reaction in me where it doesnt for others so I dont fully disagree with the assessment haha. Beyond stoked you loved Waging a War though!

26. Brand New - The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
Emo, Indie Rock, Post-Hardcore, Alternative Rock, Art Rock
2006

1. Handcuffs
2. Archers
3. Sowing Season (Yeah)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DH9r9bK5cUQ

I know virtually nothing about this band or their music. Sowing Season (Yeah), the first song, alternates between quiet and intense. This feels like pretty solid mid-00s rock; I can see the song being a blast to sing along to at concerts or parties. Im intrigued. Millstone continues with this aesthetic, a solid midtempo rocker. Jesse Laceys singing actually reminds me of Marilyn Mansons at parts, curiously enough, particularly that low growl he pulls off. Hes got some good range.

Jesus Christ, one of the albums singles, is a dark-tinged missive to the big J, with a narrator that says things like: I will die alone / And when I arrive / I wont know anyone. This seems to speak to a sense of loneliness and alienation found throughout lifewhy, after thats all we know, wouldnt death be just as lonely, if not lonelier? I love the fakeout ending; I really love when songs do that.

Apparently two songs happened in between Jesus Christ and You Wont Know. In what seems to be a consistent pattern on these rock albums, I gravitate toward the heavier songs. But I also know that an entire album like that would probably exhaust me. What a horrible night to have a curse. But You Wont Know is still kind of disinteresting to me, even on the heavier parts. I rely a lot on momentum in a song, so I tend to dislike when songs that have a lot of what Id call pushing energy abruptly pull back to something slower. Its a surefire way to break my immersion. Thats my big issue with You Wont Know.

Heres a weird music-philosophical thing Ive always known about myself: the beginnings of musical pieces, be they songs or collections of songs, are always the most important to me. They decide my opinions of the rest of the piece. Sometimes this means later songs that sound similar to earlier songs arent as impactful, or conversely I often have a more favorable opinion on earlier songs. A song like Not the Sun, which is probably as solid as Millstone but sounds very similar, has less of an impact on me because Millstone is song 2 and Not the Sun is song 8. I think about this because this album all mostly fits into the same mold, and Im favoring the earlier tracks not necessarily because I like them more, but because I heard them first. Ranking music is subjective busineHOLY FUCKING SHIT LUCA JUST SCARED THE LIVING EVERFUCK OUT OF ME JESUS SCOLIOSIS MCGILLICUDDY that goes in the top three for that alone.

Of course then I go and place Archers, song 11, on top. So maybe I dont know myself as well as I think I do. Really nice guitar and drum solo too!

And then I place Handcuffs, song 12, on the tippity top. I dont think this sounds anything like the rest of the album, so maybe it stood out for that reason. Its a pretty dark revenge fantasy/ode to sociopathy that manages to sound angry and vulnerable at the same time. A great closer to the album.

Woof that's unfortunately funny you say that...

But in any case, yea The Devil And God was extremely formative for me growing up especially living near-ish where Brand New are from. I'm actually pleasantly surprised you don't have Jesus in your top 3! That's generally the song most people take from the album, but it's on the lower end for me while still loving it. I'm much more of a Degausser and Limousine guy, Handcuffs is a fantastic #1 pick though. The sounds the album does, the range of loudness and atmosphere it goes for make it really quite special.

The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me is definitely a top ten album of all time for me. The emotional range on that beast of a record still astounds me in both the instrumentation and lyrics. You Wont Know is a definite contender for my favorite BN song, that shit rocks.

In other news, at the risk of a jinx, I'm so thankful and beaming with joy that Kelsea Ballerini made the top 25!

A Trick of the Tail is an interesting pick for Genesis tbh. I listened to both it and Selling England by the Pound yesterday, and I liked the latter considerably more. A Trick of the Tail is still pretty good though. However the tracks that stood out to me were completely different from the ones rwlh brought up. Entangled in particular was my favorite from the album. Dance on a Volcano was just alright, with some good aspects.

the long line has some really cool synths and piano parts. I recognize that this is an album that I should listen to the full thing to get the intended experience, which I may do at some point, but this was a pretty great track even on its own.

My main complaint about a lot of modern anime soundtracks is how many short queues they use, and this one is a culprit of that. And Test,Test,And Test Some More is pretty great with the vocals and neat instruments it uses, but it ends way too quickly. It's pretty likely that I'll go through this soundtrack at some point, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but yeah, the soundtracks with mostly songs 2 minutes or less trend has become way too common in anime.

Deep Forest is another really cool song. The vocal samples are really well-used and the primary bass loop is pretty sick. I could see myself enjoying this album. Tribal Ambient is a genre I'm not super familiar with, but if it's like this song, I'd definitely be into it.

Definitely thought this freakout was going to be over Limousine! How is there no mention of that song or Degausser at all? Very likely my top two on the record haha. The four minute long buildup on Limousine is a masterclass, and the story behind the lyrics is pretty fascinating and tragic too. And Degausser is a force of nature - that chorus hits like a heavier Sowing Season everytime. Jesse Lacey's screaming vocals on that track were never topped in the rest of their discography (and their follow-up record Daisy was filled with Lacey screaming).

Ahhh the fakeout ending on Jesus Christ! Good stuff. Pretty sure it was the song that made me fall in love with fakeout endings. The latest brilliant fakeout ending that comes to mind for me is in Tool's Pneuma.

To be honest, Handcuffs is probably tied with Not the Sun for the weakest songs on the whole thing to me, so that's a shock to see it be the track that made the top song list. That said, it's still an amazing track and a great closer. Devil and God is just a top 5 album of all time for me so I can easily see any ranking for all of these songs. Someone's favorite being someone else's least favorite isn't too surprising at all. Like You Won't Know - that's a mid tier track for me but it has a vocal fan base! (Hi Snake)

Glad you got to enjoy this amazing record! And I got to vicariously experience listening to it for the first time through you

Oh yea a neat thing to go along with The Devil and God, I generally wouldn't recommend Brand New stuff anymore to people but since you already are aware of The Devil and God, there were a bunch of demo songs for the album leaked (referred to by fans as Fight Off Your Demons) on the internet back in early 2006 that they then scrapped most of and started fresh for the actual album. But they were always songs that the diehard fans had copies of and knew, however in 2015/2016 they finally officially released them. There's one in particular that is honestly one of my favorite Brand New songs, and felt the most fully fleshed out and really a blueprint for how they took the actual album. The last 2 minutes in particular are a standout. Well it seemed the band agreed because they stealth released a new 2015 recording of the song when they officially released the songs. But anyway, I'll post the original 2006 demo version so you get a taste of how it was like back then

Yes I've heard there are...some problematic things about the lead singer I'm assuming that's why you don't recommend the band's music anymore? (And why the comparison to Marilyn Manson is a bit too on the nose.) Still, I liked the album all the same.

Nobody Moves feels a little "brighter" than Devil and God? Like the instrumentation or the vocals feels, well, not happier, but...I don't know, more "open". This is where my lack of music knowledge bites me in the rear - am I making this up? I really like it; it might have cracked the top three on Devil and God if it had been there.

Parallel Timeline is really nice. The acoustic guitar, piano chords, and vocal harmonies all make for a very pretty song. I tend to like indie rock/pop, so I think I'd enjoy this album if I were to try it out. May put it on my list for the future.

The main distorted synth in Hypnotized is pretty great. Ooh, and the buildup with the Middle Eastern instruments. I think I like the vocals more when they're more airy, but they're fine during the chorus as well. Some dubstep elements as well, which I generally enjoy. Pretty varied song, and I'm here for it. This is definitely significantly better than any of the Alice Schach stuff that's showed up in VGMC. May check out the full album at some point.

The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me was one of the albums I marked to listen to when this topic was made, and I first listened to it last Saturday, and boy was it an experience. This album was devastatingly beautiful. So much emotion packed into the vocals, lyrics, and instrumental. Jesus, Degausser, and Limousine all hit me like a truck when they first played. Handcuffs was also a highlight for me, and is a good pick for the best track, although I definitely prefer the three I previously mentioned. Thanks for nomming this, Blur, and indirectly getting me to listen to this. One of my favorite new albums I've heard this year.

I really enjoyed the three songs from Matthew and the Atlas. I would put it at Folklore tier, which is pretty good for me! I would probably put this higher if I cared more about lyrics. For me, I only notice lyrics after repeated visits and, even then, I would need a transcript to know what's being said. And, even after that, there's very few lines that stick in my head, especially in a meaningful way.

I really enjoy the album art of The Strangest Frequency. It's a good vibe. Speaking of a good vibe, I really enjoyed this set of 3 songs!

I don't mind the singer of Black Country, New Roads too much. Instrumental is usually my jam, but this isn't it. The other 2 songs are good though.

Occult Descartes is very cool. The other 2 songs from Lemm are good, but not quite as good as Occult Descartes.

Atomic Bird is also very cool in a way that differentiates itself from other songs on the list. The man in the desert gives me strong "Civ V" vibes. I generally like that soundtrack. Nopwhere and Everywhere is good, but a lot more similar to a lot of other songs on this list.

The Bitter Suite is pretty good, but there's no way concept albums, especially lyric-heavy ones, will ever appeal to me. Also, I don't associate circuses with priests, even corrupt ones! King of Swords (Reversed) is very good.

Oh hey, I recognize Basket Case, but I never knew that it was named this. It's a good song. The other songs are alright.

I appreciate the lyrics of More Data. Reminds me of work. It's merely OK as a song, though. But yeah, I'm surprised I'm able to catch the lyrics here than most songs. Maybe because most of the songs are more like speech or dialogue.

Tarot Sport is extremely good. I loved all 3 songs. I think this type of music just naturally appeals to me, though. I can see this getting a high floor but low ceiling.

Genesis is good, but doesn't leave much of an impression on me.

circle is very interesting. I can see this being an album I like. The three songs I heard are pretty good, but it's pretty hard to talk about any of them, because it feels like I'm only listening to part of something larger.

Similarly, Dr. Stone is tough to talk about because I feel like I only got a small glimpse of its album. The instrumentation is nice, but most fantasy-based games/anime tend to have that nice sound.

Deep Forest is, indeed, really good. The other 2 songs are good, but not quite as good. I feel like this one's best in small doses.

I don't have too much to say on Slothrust. I like the 2nd and 3rd songs way more than the 1st.

I thought it's funny that all 3 Schach songs have the stylized titled. This could very easily not be my style, but it handles it well. Both the instrumentation and vocals work really well with each other.

There's a ton of praise for Brand New here from what I can see. The songs are all really enjoyable and carry different vibes.

Well, last night I did some more listening, so here we go with my thoughts:

So you telling me that Wrap Your Arms Around Me is the same band behind the silly "One Week"? Yeah, okay, if anything is proof that I hardly know this band, it is. Haunting vocals are nice and I like how hollow the drums feel and oh shit is that a horn instrument - this was decent, though I wonder how I'd feel if I wasn't overwhelmed by surprise.

is really cool! When the part that sounds like vocals (are they actually vocals idk) kicks in gives off a mysterious feel. This feels tame compared to what I associate Feryquitious with - that is rhythm games I am still a noob about ... Oh I like how the melody pops back in at 2:42. Ok uh what the fuck was that ending???? Doesn't ruin the song for me but man creepy children ??? laughing ????wasn't on my bingo card (probably because I forgot what rwlh wrote about the songs)

Immediately I have a feeling I'm going to either like or dislike Frou-frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires as the song goes on. And yeah, I feel mildly exhausted in a strange way. It's very ... heavy on my senses? Gonna need to sit on this one some more, but I still saved it.

Wow can't believe Jacob Collier wrote a song about me! In My Bones feels like a song that's a collaboration between a time traveler from the future and a funky legend from the past. I also feel a little exhausted as this one goes on, (I blame the Foxes!) but it's still pretty good.

I am a Dookie TRUTHER, but listening to Holiday / Boulevard of Broken Dreams makes me forget this fact. The first half is an absolute banger. And holy fuck, yeahhhh, Boulevard of Broken Dreams is just as good as my cringe edge teen self thought it was. Embrace the cringe. Become one with it.

Wow, there's so much heart in Waging a War (Acoustic) ... I love it when thee other vocals back the main vocalist especially. The acoustics give this a very dreamlike sound especially. That harp! I rather like this one.

Oh, Thunderbird is quite fun. Really feels like an anthem. This is quite a song to listen to after the previous one ...and also to listen to shortly before bed. I feel like I can take on anything, but like when I wake up in the morning. (None of this will make sense because this all will be posted in the morning/afternoon after I wake)

---

Some of these will probably get reevaluated now that it is daytime and also what the fuck I still have Boulevard of Broken Dreams stuck in my head.

Nah, I'm glad you nominated What's Your Pleasure, that shit slaps.

1. Rainforest Collapse III
2. Rainforest Collapse I
3. Rainforest Collapse II

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDFTXz9HFZ8

From the first song, TIKTAALK.mid, I can tell this is going to be an album full of surprises. This song trips over itself with musical ideas (in a good way). Board Room is even better one of the comments on the Bandcamp page says of the album:

It sounds like someone commissioned 80's-era Frank Zappa to do the music for a Sega CD game.

Im no Zappa expert, but I feel like this stuff is straight out of some surreal portal into an alternate 1993, where the TurboGrafx-CD was putting out prog fusion gems like this. I do run into the issue I face in a lot of prog/fusion where my focus will wane after a while, but whenever my brain dips back in it likes what it hears. The first four songs blend together but everything is an enjoyable stew of composition and samples.

U-Turn sticks out for a compelling hook at the start and some nice riffs throughout. Ive long since accepted my ignorance of musical terms, but I do wish I could speak to some specifics about why I like this song instead of its cool, but its pretty darn cool. Passenger is the most intense of the songs thus far; I could see this as a chase/boss theme in this hypothetical alternate universe game. I like the mix of breakbeat and softer piano as a counterpoint with the more intense main melody. I especially like around 3:05 when the drumbeat surges up, because I am always a sucker for heavy percussion. A highlight so far.

Some of these songs Im not into as much, like Test of Ascension and RIO Sunshine. Its such a shame that my brain turns off during some of these songs because they do such interesting things; Ive yet to figure out why this is. I will say that when Passenger (album) is at a high point, Im very into it, but its tough for me to parse through all of the diverse musical ideas on display.

Walled Garden sounds like FACTORY NOISES which means I automatically love it. Also appreciate BIRB noises in the aptly named Birdhouse.

And then we get to the Rainforest Collapse songs. Rainforest Collapse I has an intro that sounds straight out of Oneohtrix Point Nevers Replica. The soundscape in this song is lush like a rainforest (hehehe) and is a nice mixture of intense and laidback, juxtaposing the two extremes of the album in one song. Very nice! Rainforest Collapse II does something unique so far and offers a consistent beat throughout (most of) the whole piece, which actually makes it easier for me to follow along; it helps that the beat is very bouncy. Bouncy beats are good beats. Some nice polymeter too! Rainforest Collapse III is a darker tint than the other two perhaps were finally in the collapse stage? These three songs are the highlight of the album for me.

I appreciate the creation process of Passenger. On the Bandcamp page Cryptovolans says:

Each track on Passenger is a single midi file played back on the Roland SC-88 Pro with layered sound effects sourced from:
-Corel WordPerfect Suite
-Microsoft Office Suite
-Network Music - Presentation Audio Music & Sound Effects (Vol. 1 Business / Office, Vol. 5 Comedy / Animation).

Id love to see a breakdown of which sounds came from where. Sampling stuff like that always fascinates me.

I like some of this album, am ambivalent on others, and really liked the Rainforest Collapse tracks. Thanks for sharing I knew going in that this would be an experience, and it certainly was!

1. End of the Line
2. Until Morale Improves, the Beatings Will Continue
3. The Devil in Mexico

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tm1jiEWlyJk

Have I heard of this band? Maybe? I dont know. From the first song, The Devil in Mexico, theyre clearly going for an aesthetic: the old-timey warped audio gives way to a clearer rock song thats very somber. The singer (Adam Turla, I have learned) doesnt seem to have a lot of range so far but thats not necessarily a bad thing. Theres a nice sense throughout the denser parts of The Devil in Mexico, like the songs a few paces away from keeling over (like the devil?). Ooh and then theres a long stretch in the last minute that goes heavier on the drums and layered vocals. And screaming. Not sure what to make of this yet!

Killbot 3000 sounds really really different! Wow. Really feeling the piano and strings here. Interesting!

I did some research and apparently this is another concept album (yall really like those, huh). This one is about the devil massacring a town in Mexico. I guess I didnt need to know that to enjoy it which I am, generally speaking but it helps inform some of the content. Why is the devil killing people? Did he get bored in hell? Perhaps these questions will be answered.

Until Morale Improves, the Beatings Will Continue has some of the best synergy between a guitar and a drum and strings I may have ever heard, wow, very impressive. Three songs in and I have come to the conclusion that Turlas voice isnt doing these songs any favors. He seems to have one mode of singing and vocal inflection, contrasting with the expressive instruments around him.

One thing I appreciate about this album with a name thats too long to type is the songs all feel dynamic, flowing naturally between different movements. A Masters in Reverse Psychology smoothly moves between different moods and intensities. End of the Line is suitably intense for a big climax; as with The Devil in Mexico, it feels off-kilter in a great way.

WWSaWWBLoT benefits from the album experience. Looking back I know I wont be able to recall specific parts of any of its songs (except maybe End of the Line), but the album, taken as a total experience, transcends the individual songs. There are only a handful in this topic I can say that about.

1. Scatman (ski-ba-bop-ba-dop-bop)
2. Mambo Jambo
3. Hi, Louis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hy8kmNEo1i8

This would not have been my first guess for which nomination opens with a manifesto of purpose. Scatman John aiming high!

I genuinely did not know Scatman John had any other song besides the song everyone knows him for. Yet heres a whole album of Scatman! Even more surprising is that these songs have a lofty meaning of coming together, world peace, and even some environmental themes. Scatman John has always been an inspirational figure to me: someone who didnt let his speech disability stand in the way of his personal success. Not only that, but he connected with tons and tons of people, particularly young people, with speech disabilities. Talk about a hero.

In terms of the actual music, itsokay? Its very 90s with danceable beats, keyboards, and echoing vocals. That alone gives it an edge for me. The lyrics are very positive. Only You, for example, has the Scatman waxing poetic about an object of love in a very wholesome way. I get the sense that he really connected with children in particular. Quiet Desperation is more downtempo and contemplative, offering a compassionate look at a homeless person; I appreciate how the keyboard and the singing mirror each other, I generally like when songs do that.

Scatmans voice is kind of rough, but I think thats part of the charm: he presents himself authentically, without artifice. The image he puts out through this album reminds me of 90s Michael Jackson, a sort of emissary of peace through music.

Scatman (ski-ba-bop-ba-dop-bop) is one of the greatest songs ever composed and you will not convince me otherwise. The whole album is worth it just for that song alone. Few songs are more capable of putting a smile on my face than this one. Popstar has some incisive commentary on fame, done through his lighthearted style: A pop is an explosion, all youve got is you today. Mambo Jambo is just pure fun, with some of the most intensive scatting on the album and freewheeling pace on the album. Hi, Louis is what I was hoping for more of on the album: a song of nothing but scatting! Scatman (Game over Jazz) even closes out the album with some electroswing! Very cool.

This album is infectious. While theres only a handful of songs Id come back to, Ive got to respect and admire Scatmans vision. The whole thing is worth a listen definitely a surprising highlight among nominations.

Yes I've heard there are...some problematic things about the lead singer

It always bugged me how this has stained Brand New's legacy and went basically unreported on so

There's a whole rabbit hole to dive into regarding these allegations if you so choose, but I'll try and keep it brief (note from future self: I failed). Also I'll preface this with fuck rape apologists and the whole rape apologia culture. It seems to have reared its ugly head again with the clearly credible Russell Brand allegations. This is literally the only case I can think of, period, where the accuser was caught outright lying.

Basically the main accusations that were reported on were incredibly misleading. The woman who claimed she was 15 when she and Jesse Lacey were sleeping together didn't meet Lacey until she was 19. This was corroborated by her own friends later, but more importantly, it was corroborated by herself in her own words. She had one of those LiveJournal websites (remember those?) which she posted to regularly at that time, and she very clearly talks about meeting Lacey for the first time when she would have been 19. There's some worrying stuff on there though to say the least - she was a groupie who regularly slept with bands in that scene when she was underage. There's some emo band I can't remember the name of, and she talks about sleeping with their 30 year old lead singer when she was 16. There's your actual predator.

The poor girl likely has/had mental health problems, so I'm not even certain to what extent she knew she was lying. Right when the accusations first came out, she was regularly posting Brand New lyrics on her social media...pretty bizarre considering what she just accused the singer of. This was what prompted some fans to do some investigative journalism that led to these revelations. And I kind of think it speaks incredibly highly of Brand New fans that this woman wasn't vehemently attacked and doxxed and lobbed death threats against when this was found out. I feel like any other band with that level of fame...the fans would have gotten very, very toxic. Glad it never came to that, though it also shouldn't have gone entirely unreported on.

The only other, much less egregious accusations that were made were by this woman's friend. And that's unfortunately all we know about those accusations, so I won't comment any farther.

With this context, Lacey's statement post-allegations also made so much more sense for me. He basically apologized to those he hurt because of his sex addiction in the past, but never acknowledged the allegations specifically or apologized specifically for them. It made a lot of people even more furious. In hindsight, it totally makes sense. It also totally makes sense that Lacey would be self-deprecating enough to not really stand up for himself at all.

I don't think Lacey was a saint or anything with a totally clear record on this stuff. The guy was a rockstar in his early 20s who admitted to his own sleaziness. But finding out this information was still very reassuring to me as someone who was fucking devastated when the news came out. Like...no news story had ever broken my heart more.

Forgive me for my wall of text and don't let me derail this topic, I just thought this might reassure some Brand New fans the way it did for me.

Also Jesse has never made a single effort to come back to the scene (i think Brand New was given the offer to play at the When We Were Young fest and they turned it down) and is by all accounts a great husband and father who was trying to better himself for the better part of two decades. I understand some people not wanting to forgive him regardless or listen to the band anymore but I haven't really let that tarnish the music for me.

Top 25 and Top 10 in a rwlh ranking list? I WILL take that to the bank, thank you very much!

But yeah, Scatman was probably the first ever song/music video I ever watched when YouTube was new back in like....2006/07. I can't remember if I ever tried to share it with my friends at school at the time, but God knows I found the first instance of a banger I instantly recognized and loved.

Also, I was "4-5 months back" years old when I looked deeper into the album where Scatman came from, and I was NOT expecting the electro swing remix at the very end. It was a very welcome surprise to me - hidden in plain sight all these years! - and I'm very happy to share that fact and spread the gospel of Scatman anywhere I can go with it.

I feel like I can separate the art and the artist, but also feel like it would have probably affected mine still. Anyway, I was more trying to reassure Brand New fans if there are any here who might not know. Though now I'm anxiously awaiting Bane to PM me back, worried I might be wrong :( Really sinking feeling.

There was one very important piece of information I must have repressed that I edited in: Lacey at least texted the accuser when she was 17. Considering he was 24, I still don't find that as predatory as Leo being almost 50 and dating 18 year olds, but we also don't know those texts. Hopefully that's the only context I was missing.

Anyway, back to music! I'm really digging the Cryptovolans right now, thanks for the writeup inspiring me to listen. And Scatman indeed rules

I listened to a few more last night. Cat was being unruly so I quickly put a stop to that after only three songs.

Mark's Theme makes me think I've parted ways with a lover I was not meant to be with, and maybe he is also a detective from a black and white movie idk. Oh, added instruments!! I love the piano addition. Voices at the end kinda spooked me tho lol

The intro of Occult Descartes really does remind me of Lemm's VGMC entrants. I wish I could articulate but it's this very sci fi sound ... The singing is all over the place but I don't think that's a detriment in the slightest. I could give or take this vocalist in parts, but the fact that the song is interesting and throws out something new every minute more than makes up for it.

Well, of course I love Atomic Bird. A heavenly (and in places invoking of some manner of divine wrath) piece, with help from the Cosmic Voices of Bulgaria. The rhythmic vocal work in the latter half is a highlight. I've said before I love it when voices are used like percussion, and I stand by it. An incredibly powerful piece ...this is definitely a highlight on the album for me. And you picked a good top three personally!! Three of my favourite tracks, definitely. Thank you for listening even if it didn't rank as highly as I wanted. And yeah I know I probably didn't need to relisten to my own pick.

Will try to check out the album that Occult Descartes is from in the future.

And in other news Frog on the Floor is still stuck in my head.

The backstory (such as it is, and as I understand it) is all in the first minute or two of Devil in Mexico - he stops by a town, visits the bar for a drink or five, and as he leaves someone shoots him in the back. With his dying breath (except it's not actually his dying breath, because he's the devil) he curses the town and swears his revenge, and the rest of the album is all the terrible things that happen to the townsfolk.

Fun fact: "Who will survive, and what will be left of them?" was a tag line from movie posters for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The band members watch a lot of movies, and references to them creep into song and album titles from time to time.

As time has gone on, Adam Turla has sung deeper and lower, to the point that I sometimes think he sounds like Store Brand Johnny Cash. You may like that more - I think his voice is pretty perfectly suited to the songs on this album, though.

You picked a pretty solid top 3, though I'd be tempted to put Killbot 3000 and Three Men Hanging up there too - I absolutely adore the instrumental breakdown in Killbot, and Three Men Hanging is just a vibe. Not the most pleasant vibe, you understand, but easy to just put it on and let it wash over you.

Interesting! I might like that more then. Also interesting to get your info on the album storyline, which I apparently glossed over, lol

3. ME, The Ultimate Invader of the Universe

The little intro song is bubbly synth pop, and then Hyperdimension Galaxy is j-rock-y metal? Unexpected. I cant say Ive ever particularly gravitated toward this genre, but Im always happy to be surprised. Part of my distaste for screamy metal is probably the growly vocals, so hearing a female singer, albeit a growly one, is a nice change of pace.

NEET GAME is catchy and it simultaneously hurts to listen to. Like, my ears are in pain. But its catchy! Is this like the modus operandi of this band? They straddle the line between cute pop and aggressive metal? I want to put this in the top three but I cant justify it because it actively causes me physical pain. I guess I appreciate it more than I enjoy it. I feel way more comfortable putting ver. in the top three. Its a highly enjoyable song. Tales of Villain is also pleasant, maintaining the balance between screamy metal hallmarks and pop hooks. Its fascinating to listen to this album its not really my thing per se, but Im glad Im hearing it, and in some ways I value that more than a more aurally satisfying album that doesnt offer me anything new. (This will also come up in other writeups.)

ME, The Ultimate Invader of the Universe starts out more poppy, with the metalcore seemingly lurking in the background. But then it ends without any actual metal! Fascinating. TOUSOU (Run Away) certainly makes up for that lol. This song is cool as hell, wow. I dont know why this one in particular resonates with me but its got all my favorite parts of the album, the perfect blend of the musical polarities the band strives for. Very cool! The album closes with Today's Good Day & So Epic, another solid track.

Overall Reborn Superstar! really grew on me! (See, this is why keeping an open mind is vital.) A few of the songs were a little too growly for me, particularly NEET GAME, but there are some real highlights here. Thanks for stretching me out of my comfort zone!

That back and forth between the poppy stuff and the metal is something I just love. And then Yukina being like 4'10 and dropping those growled vocals is great. They started as a Maximum the Hormone cover band so if you know anything about MtH you can see the direct influence on their music.

It's fun stuff! Ultimate Invader is actually pretty much entirely the bassist Hettsu's work and I think is meant to be a poppy break in the album. Be The Gal and Tousou are actually my favorite tracks as well, they're so catchy.

I'm actually seeing them on Tuesday night, they put on a wild live show. Can't wait.
