Waging a War - Acoustic Version is very pretty. There's a lot of really cool things going on in the instrumental from the acoustic guitar, to the clarinet, to the harp. And the vocals are very well-done. I could see myself enjoying this album quite a bit. Maybe I'll check it out sometime.

Thunderbird is pretty fun. Fairly standard song for this time of rock, but they do a good job at it. Good guitar-work, the vocals are solid, and the drums are serviceable. I don't really see myself checking this album anytime soon, but I think I'd have fun with it.

Unlike rwlh, I quite like Isaac Wood's voice. I really liked Concorde and The Place Where He Inserted the Blade, but the rest of Ants From Up There didn't really stand out to me. Mark's Theme is okay, but it only stands out to me for about 30 seconds of its duration, and it feels empty without the vocals. I do think this is an album people should experience at least once though, it's quite unique, and I definitely understand why it did so well on RYM.

P.S. I'm glad you took a listen to this and could appreciate it at least a little.

I liked the album you nominated for Rank the Tracks too. They're a cool band. You're right that every song was a surprise - as someone who values variety, that was a listening highlight for me.

38. Lemm feat. lasah - Dead-End Apartment

My sole exposure to Lemm is through two VGMC songs, IroniA and nATALIE, neither of which Ive enjoyed. Lets see how I feel about a full-length album.

After a brief prelude, the first full song, , is super immersive, with deep breathing (which I normally like, but in small doses) and a full, rich sound. Im not 100% sold on the vocals, but I really like all the accompaniment: soft, powerful, a little glitchy. I would already say I prefer this to the two VGMC numbers. Song 2, Occult Descartes, is more of the same: breezy and glitchy but still hits very powerfully. I like lasahs voice more in this song, particularly when she lets loose with a fuller sound. Occult Descartes is really quite cool everything works together in harmony to create a really engaging sound. Very nice!

Song 3, the ghost next door, is kind of an R&B song, which is a bit unexpected but not unwelcome. Nice beat to it. One thing of note is lasah shifts between Japanese and English vocals with ease. Like I dont even notice that shes singing in multiple languages until I stop and think about it. Its seamless. I also appreciate the chill lo fi beats in the ghost next door. Dead-End Apartment is full of chill lo fi beats.

Not as into song 4, oracin, as the others so far. Not quite sure why maybe I feel like its not distinct enough from the earlier tracks. A victim of the classic earlier songs in an album stick out more syndrome. Actually oracin sort of reminds me of Blue Reflection in parts, specifically the parts of that soundtrack I enjoy. Maybe I do like this one more than I thought. Im also not all that into but again, I really like the R&B beat.

The title track, Dead-End Apartment, is one of my favorites on the album. Its very emotional, with lots of piano and big chords. lasah is still breathy for parts but here she opens up more, which I already said I like. The song covers a lot of different emotions and is a good showcase for her, as well as Lemms production. While I prefer Occult Descartes, Dead-End Apartment (song) seems like the best showcase of their skills as musicians.

Overall not a bad outing! I didnt love every song but I really enjoyed the overall vibe and especially the beats. Occult Descartes in particular is a real gem. Im glad Lemm has some music I like. Thanks for nominating!

37. Yoko Kanno Song to fly
Art Pop
1998

1. Atomic Bird
2. The man in the desert
3. Nowhere and Everywhere

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AS0AXZJMgsk

Now thats a heck of an opener. Acapella female choir with terrific harmonies. Theres something powerful about this recording where you feel like youre right there with the choir, being directly sung to, immersed in the song. And then it transitions seamlessly into something more fast-paced, with drums. These Cosmic Voices of Bulgaria (great name) know a thing or two about music. And sure, I guess Kanno does too. That last chord is especially terrific.

Reunion features a different singer, with a rich alto voice. I think I enjoy altos more than sopranos as a whole, maybe because sopranos feel a bitoverused? And a solid alto can have such an incredible register. Tulivu-Donna Cumberbatch certainly fits that bill. Killer vibrato too. Life can be hard / But thats not my destiny. Pretty great stuff so far, though I prefer Atomic Bird (first song). The string and piano accompaniment is just so lovely. Ooh and theres a sax! Kanno pulling out all the stops and its only two songs in!

Whoa Next Time is in a very different style, very playful and sneaky. Then Franco Sansalone comes in sounding like fucking Tom Waits LOL. This is the first song on the album I think would be improved by removing the singer. Not really a fan of this one. I like the chimes though! ABC Mouse Parade is another sort of whimsical piece, but Gabriela Robin meshes with the instrumental better. Interestingly, its whimsical in a different way more of a march, a Billy Hatcher to Next Times Napple Tale (yes I know Kanno didnt compose for Billy Hatcher). I like the Here we gooooo followed by a surprisingly rock-oriented break. Even when Im not super into the music, the album still surprises me.

This EDEN starts pretty New Agey, with big, ethereal chords and acoustic guitar. Its really beautiful. Comparatively simple compared to some of the other tracks, but its very effective. Nowhere and Everywhere reminds me of a more orchestral variant on a classic rock track very wistful, and very cool.

Theres some intriguing variety on this album. A lot of it so far has been slower-paced and lyrical, but the actual execution the instruments and singers is pretty diverse.

Most of the remaining album is Warsaw Philharmonic tracks, which dont have featured singers. Theyre soothing. I especially like The man in the desert.

Song to fly was fine. Im not really familiar with Kannos non-VGM work, but I like a lot of her VGM output. There were only a few songs that I can say I enjoyed, but I appreciated the variety and juxtaposition between solemnity and playfulness. There was also a great variety of singers, each of whom conjured particular emotions. Not for me, but might recommend to others.

I can hear what you mean by Thunderbird having a touch of "country-rock" sound. What's intriguing is the implication that this is not how all the songs sound, and it's just the twist on this one song in particular. It almost makes me want to listen to another song just to hear the comparison, to see if the style is noticeably different. Because I didn't even dislike this song as it is, surprisingly. Listening to the radio has led me to believe that modern "rock" music is a dead genre.

Another instrumental, another song where your commentary on the #1 sounding unique from the rest makes me want to hear the rest. Except I probably wouldn't like this one as much. At least you made the first song sound interesting with a bunch of different things going on at once, so that will be the one I try (if I actually go that far).

Occult Descartes was very cool. I vaguely remember the two VGMC songs listed and I think I liked this better than those. I especially like the first verse where she's singing in a whispering voice. It reminds me of Splatoon styled music mixed with "Supporting Me" from Sonic Adventure 2. The rest of the instrumentation stays interesting and I don't mind the vocals even when they stop whispering.

36. The Dear Hunter - Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise

1. The Bitter Suite IV and V: The Congregation and the Sermon in the Silt
2. King of Swords (Reversed)
3. Remembered

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIBJ-RYSAhU

I remember this band from an earlier ranking topic. I gave A Night on the Town, your nomination, just shy of bottom 10 out of 164 songs. Bold of you to nominate the album its from for this

I know this is a very lyrics-heavy band, so Im trying my hardest to pay attention to the words. Apparently this album is part of an overarching storyline about someone named Hunter (is he especially Dear?) trying to live a new life. These sorts of concept albums intrigue me. Do I need to be familiar with the previous three Acts to fully appreciate this? I dont think so; thus far the lyrics have been vague enough and havent seemed to reference prior storylines. Then again, despite my best efforts the lyrics keep slipping away from me. I warned you!

The album is pretty proggy. Lots of fun with time signatures. I can always appreciate that, even if Im not always all that into it.

I think Id be a bit kinder to A Night on the Town now. IIRC my major complaint before was the length, and I didnt mind that as much. I even appreciated the extended instrumental ending.

Boy, Rebirth in Reprise isnt holding my interest, like, at all. Thats not a good thing for an album thats almost 80 minutes! The songs all feel pretty samey. Again, despite my best efforts Im barely focusing on the lyrics, so theres not as much for me to grab onto. However, the back half I actually find to be more varied and engaging.

YouTube offers this description for The Bitter Suite:

They arrive at the Church, and Hunter recognizes the priest from when he worked in The Dime, which has been closed because of the war. He speaks against The Priest knowing that he's The Pimp, but the mass ignores him, and the sermon begins. The Priest tells the people that the only way to salvation is through him money. The sermon ends, and Hunter is approached by The Priest, applauded as a returning war hero. He pretends to not know who The Priest really is, and pretends to not be Hunter. The Priest suggests that Hunter run for mayor, to fix the corruption in the City. Hunter agrees, seeing that this is the perfect way to get rid of The Pimp and The Priest.

I feel like context has got to help here, right? Is there some sort of magical unlocking mechanism that will make this all resonate more with me? Ooh, but then I actually get to The Bitter Suite and it actually sounds kind of different to the rest of the album. I almost always enjoy evil circus music, which feels fitting for a corrupt priest (context!). Also, Im able to focus on the lyrics here, presumably because Im actually enjoying the song and so it doesnt feel like a chore >_>; Then the last part of The Bitter Suite starts and I go right back to zoning out.

King of Swords (Reversed) is surprisingly funky lol what. Thats unexpected XD

Takeaways by the end:
- This is still generally not a style I care for and I zoned out a lot
- But! When Im invested in the song, I have minimal problems listening to the lyrics
- I was only able to reliably pick up on the lyrics to one song (The Bitter Suite)

NBIceman, I dont know if you even remember my ranking topic from a few years ago. If you do, it was a bold choice to give me this album again. I do thank you for letting me experience a different side to this band. If you didnt remember, wellmaybe you will next time

To those of you curious about Sunspot's variety, I suggest you just give the album a spin and see if you like it. Or at least listen to some others. I'd suggest "Cry Wolf" "I Don't Wanna Be a Ghost" and "Spend the Night." Or possibly "Dear Diary" which is about Marylin Monroe, the Kennedys, and the aliens.

But really you can't go wrong with anything on that album.

Occult Descartes is pretty cool. Cool synths, and the piano accompaniment is great. The vocals are neat as well. Oh, and those chords in the chorus are spicy, I love it. I can imagine myself enjoying this album, but it wouldn't be for a while if I were to listen to it.

And here's my favorite album in the set. Song to fly is one of Kanno's strongest works, with a huge genre variety in just 11 songs. Atomic Bird is gorgeous with an authentic Bulgarian choir, which is one of my favorite types of choirs in general. My favorite tracks though are the Warsaw Philharmonic tracks, especially The man in the desert. The man in the desert is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard and is in my top 3 Kanno songs in general. Nowhere and Everywhere is another great pick for your top 3. Love Steve Conte's voice, and the song itself is basically Kanno's take on making a Beatles song. Thanks for listening, rwlh, even if it didn't make it as high as I would've liked.

Apparently The Bitter Suite IV and V is very different from the rest of the album, but it's pretty cool. I like it better once it picks up after the "evil circus" bit. Great vocals, guitar, drum, and brass work here. I do generally love prog rock, so I'd probably enjoy this album, even if it sounds nothing like this track.

First off: great album art. Feels very low-budget zine, really conjures up a specific aesthetic.

The line Im not growing up, Im just burning out sums up the ache of teendom in a very profound and genuine way. I dont get the sense throughout this album that Green Day are compromising their messages for mass appeal. They helped bring back a punk sensibility to 90s music and its easy to see why.

I dont love the production on Dookie. Billie Joes vocals are faded so far back that I cant make any sense of what hes singing. It reminds me of shoegaze music and is clearly tied to the punk style, so it might just be a matter of preference. Ive been trying to pay attention to the lyrics in these nominations but its nigh impossible here I can barely make out a word of it.

There are some good guitar and drum solos; the one in Chump got me pretty hyped.

I always enjoyed Longview. Im sure its no small coincidence that its one of the only songs with intelligible lyrics due to being more acoustic. Its very radio friendly so it makes sense to be one of the big singles from the album. Basket Case, another radio friendly jam, is the only song I legitimately enjoy it easily takes the top spot.

Pulling Teeth is like punk meets country. Its a bizarre mashup and it doesnt work all that well to me but I appreciate the band mixing it up a bit. (Im not the only one hearing this, am I?)

I unironically love All by Myself. What a hilarious way to end the album.

Most of these songs blended into each other except for the singles. If I had to rank everything I would have no idea where to even start! I didnt connect with most of the album apart from the singles maybe Im too far removed from the pop-punk scene, or from the troubles the band sings about. I imagine this would have been a real wake-up call for me at seventeen but I was too busy listening to [REDACTED] instead.

One thing I appreciate is how the band keeps it real. The band touches on real issues: sex and breakups, drug use, finding your place in the world. Dookie isnt for me; in another timeline, it could be.

Finally got around to starting to listen along to these. Will I catch up? Probably not.

Oh boy, Show Me the Way is kind of disappointing. I'm not that fond of the vocalist unfortunately, but the song itself is fine! To the point that I'm willing to overlook his singing for 3:07. >>

Taylor Swift is one of those musicians that I understand why people like them, but I don't get the monolithic position they're placed upon. I actually like invisible string though?? Rhythm of her voice is good. I like it when vocals have a rhythm to them a lot so I guess I'm biased... Really want to know how I would have felt if a song that didn't have this specific thing I really like was picked as the "best" one!

Frog On the Floor is an absolute life changer. 10/10 this song single handedly cured my depression and brought about world peace for the entire human race.

Yours Truly, 2095 sounds very ELO to me, and this is a compliment. Suffice to say that if I was doing the rankings, this album would probably fare better to me. The strings and robotic vocals are both big yeses from me!

I'm into the bubbly sound of February Air right off the bat. LIGHTS' voice isn't too cutesy for me in this one, though I can understand that criticism. I follow someone who is a big fan of hers, so I know a little bit. A very sweet song.

Snail Shell is delightfully funky. I've always liked TMBG, but never did a deep dive in their work, but usually they put me in a good mood even though they ain't high art or anything like that.

I'm overblown by how much I liked the Taytay song, but the other standouts weren't surprising. Frog on the Floor is such a good dumb song holy shit lmao

1. More Data
2. Dont Dont Get Freaked Out
3. Content

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTWD0j4tec4

The first song, Unlawful Assembly, is an intro of sorts full of vocal clips about, well, unlawfully assembling, complete with screaming and gunshots. Its a big risk to open an album like this will it pay off? Song 2, Content, is marginally more accessible, with more vocal clips about, well, content, replete with squeaky glitchy effects. The vocal clips take the place of singing I wonder where they came from, if theyre public domain media or if they were recorded specifically for this. I like the panoramic content content content in different voices. Its very disorienting in a good way. Very clear themes emerge immediately, most notably the overwhelming ubiquitousness of modern technology, how its everywhere, in every facet of our lives. People on the album have inane conversations with Siri and, maybe, other people, though whether these are conversations between humans or between humans and AI (or even between AI and AI) is up in the air, which is, I suspect, the point.

This is a reeeeally tough album for me to rate. I appreciate what its going for and the points its making and its singular approach to making these points. But I dont enjoy it. It feels like a lot of the songs make similar points about technology and humanity (valid points to be sure); of everything on the list, this might win the least necessary to be a whole album award. Again, I appreciate it, so its staying out of the bottom tierbut yeah.

I will say More Data is pretty cool. The repeated and frantic Help Mes coupled with the falsely soothing robot voices about all of the data and the dissonant backing musicI feel a strong emotional connection to this one. Dont Dont Get Freaked Out likewise lands because of the unique percussion in this case, keys on a keyboard. I also like the meta story of someone talking to their computer. When you first meet somebody / Theyre typically alive LOL. And Open Your Mouth is delightfully weird in a unique way. So hey, maybe I was being uncharitable. Im always happy to be proven wrong like this.

You gave me John Cages Rozart mix for a non-vgm ranking and I gave it top ten. This was an even riskier nomination and sadly this one didnt pan out as well. Certainly one of the more unique nominations though, and for that Im glad to have listened to it.

The bubbles are strong with this one.

Surf Solar starts out one way and then eventually blossoms into a big, dynamic experience. I started getting into it around the three-minute mark. Its absolutely the kind of song I need to be in the right mood for. Its repetitive in that sort of trance/house style, and I know a lot of my reaction to that genre is mood dependent. I do like this song though, the way its structured around these repeated phrases and big swelling moments. Its relaxing and oddly inspirational.

Within like one second of Rough Steez I know I like it more than Surf Solar. That grungy, washed-out sound really feels good on a guttural level. And then 0:45 hits and the song transforms, sort of like what Surf Solar does, but it goes in a direction I absolutely want to follow. What can I say, Im a sucker for weird percussion. Its probably the musical aspect most consistent across my entire taste everything I like and dislike has big exceptions, but Im practically guaranteed to always like weird percussion. I cant tell if the percussion here is someone scatting or something inorganic, but whatever it is, it anchors me to the music. I also love all the electronic/glitchy elements. Really solid song.

Not really feeling The Lisbon Maru. Bring back the weird percussion! Olympians, however, starts out cool, gradually transitioning from the droney transition into something almost tribal in nature, and flowing naturally into an extended guitar note. Ooh and then 4:30 happens, it builds to such a nice climax! It does go on a little too long for me though?

You might think Tarot Sport is the ultimate in blue balls, with loud, repetitive segments that seem to only function as teases. On the contrary: I enjoy this contemplative, patient approach to music. Again, I need to be in the right mindset to properly appreciate it, but I feel as if, by track 4, Fuck Buttons has placed me there.

Thus far Ive only enjoyed the even-numbered songs: Rough Steez and Olympians. Tracks 1, 3, and 5 havent grabbed me that much. Track 6, Space Mountain, is also kind of cool. It feels like these even-numbered tracks are more structured around building toward climaxes. Maybe that makes them more appealing to me, I dont know, I did just say I liked the more patient approach so who knows. This is an album that fills me with contradictions. Then song 7, Flight of the Feathered Serpent, breaks the pattern because I really like it. This one in particular reminds me of The Field.

Overall good music to put on in the background. Theres nothing wrong with that. I didnt love a lot of this but what I liked, I really found engaging.

Dang, I was hoping for top half at least. My personal standouts are Surf Solar, Olympians, and Feathered Serpent - the first two were especially awesome to have as running music back when I was into that. The warped vocal sample in Surf Solar really sounds like the one in Scrap I/O...did you notice??

I actually don't remember how I found this album, I had Surf Solar saved for a long time until I looked up the rest on Spotify...I feel like it was around when I was getting into The Field, so it's entirely possible that it came up on shuffle in the "minimal techno in the late 2000s" zone.

If you get more into noise and drone one day (funny to see RYM settle on just "Electronic"), I have lots of follow-up recommendations. Maybe start with Brainfreeze from their 2013 album, which is very percussive?

I probably won't be able to keep up for long but we'll see how it goes

Billy Talent - Dead Silence
- I too had never heard of Billy Talent and was surprised to find they pull a million-plus monthly listeners on spotify. There's a style of singing and drumming here that both put me off, the emo power-belting and splashy double-time choruses aren't my thing. That said, it's effective high-energy listening produced with clarity and I can see why they retain an audience. For me it works better as background music than active listening - peripheral foot-tappers. I thought the standout tunes were Runnin' Across the Tracks for the groovy verse and bridge, Stand up and Run for the less typical chord progression (some half-diminished ii action in there?), and Don't Count on the Wicked for another cool bridge. The title track has a fun Knights of Cydonia vibe. For the most part, I can get into each song until the chorus hits and then it's too in-your-face and smothering, like the track runs out of space to breathe.

Taylor Swift - folklore
- The production imbues the tracks with a lot of textural detail and subtle dynamics to appreciate, but I don't find myself captivated much by the songwriting either lyrically or melodically. It's pleasant soundscapism, often successfully affecting a Sigur Ros-type of intimacy and tenderness (seven, epihpany, hoax) in the instrumentation. But I don't think the tunes all warrant their length, and at sixteen tracks the album feels stretched beyond its substance. Favorite tracks were hoax - good example of the sensitive production with the little string touches and soft, slightly detuned piano that sounds like you're sitting right next to it (+ a humanizing mistake at 3:19? That is so real, we're all imperfect and I relate because she is literally me), and I liked invisible string for the catchy palm-muted guitar figure. This is the first Taylor Swift record I've listened to, it was...okay.

100 Gecs - 10,000 Gecs
- Right away this benefits from the list order, providing a much-needed burst of energy after Swift's mellow selection and appropriately chasing her sheepish 'golly I didn't know anything at 17' self-deprecation with Dumbest Girl Alive. There's an aggressive slacker vibe throughout that smacks of the Pixies to me, although there's broader genre interests here ranging from ska punk and arena rock to hip-hop and grindcore. It comes across as a simple novelty party record but one that's cleverly constructed and, crucially, entertaining. Favorite track was the hangover banger Doritos and Fritos for the weird guitar harmonics bouncing between the channels.

Electric Light Orchestra - Time
- I have passing familiarity with some of this, I'm fond of the single Ticket To the Moon and I know I've heard Yours Truly, 2095 but I always thought it was a Supertramp song. Apparently, this is the first ELO record that's more Electric than Orchestra and I dig the retrofuturist aesthetic/time travel concept. Side A's largely instrumental closer Another Heart Breaks delivers a Hotline Miamiesque tropical electro vibe that has me grooving. The Lights Go Down mixes a little reggae with classic doo-wop harmonies for another recognizable chorus that I'm certain I've heard in commercial use. Overall a solid listen.

Lights - The Listening
- Smooth and relatively forgettable synth pop, with a few interesting sonic choices sprinkled throughout. The zipper bass on Februrary Air is a nice effect and the title track has some fun stereo interplay with the phaser in the right channel fading in and out. Wasn't too impressed by the full album experience though.

They Might Be Giants - John Henry
- TMBG is a band I only enjoy sparingly but respect for their longevity and persistence. It's one thing to do a band with a shtick, but to have it churn out some ~20 records across 4 decades requires a commitment to the bit. I could see John Henry growing on me if I were to spend more time with the Giants canon, for now it's been more miss than hit with the hits being Snail Shell, which seems clearly positioned as the 'lead single', AKA Driver for the Pixies-esque high energy, and O Do Not Forsake Me for adding a different color with the bassy acapella arrangement. And to rlwh's point about the album not having a strong enough sense of personality, I thought the same thing except the previously mentioned song actually did work on that front.

Miracle Musical - Hawaii Dream
- It's bound to be a little too theater kid for me in places but this was pretty cool texturally. Black Rainbows is definitely the winner with the froggy vocals. Sometimes the whole scratchy radio filter and crooner affectation comes off hokey but I can't deny that it's it's generally done well on this album and effectively renders an atmosphere of faded ghostly nostalgia, especially on the bookend tracks.

Younha - END THEORY: Final Edition
- It took a second listen on decent headphones to get into any of it. Tik-Tok does slap on the good cans, then I find the album gets somewhat repetitive until the piano ballad Here, which is a lovely break with some nice chord voicings and melodies, then Event Horizon brings the tempo back up with big opening theme song energy. The Joey-inspired closer How U Doin has some cool guitar layers. But the k-pop thing doesn't do it for me enough to get invested in a whole special edition record...I'd be good with the original 11 song 40-minute package here.

Basket Case is the obvious strongest track from Dookie, although I do like a few other tracks in the album. Dookie is pretty solid punk rock, but I do think that American Idiot is an improvement on this album in every way, so it's interesting to see rwlh put this one higher.

More Data is pretty interesting. Creating a song with mostly vocal samples and no actual singing is a bit odd, but I can appreciate it. The electronic background is cool though. I feel like there would be other songs in this album that I'd like a lot more than this one. I don't really see myself seeking this album out on my own.

I don't think Rough Steez would be my favorite song from this album either, but I liked this one quite a bit more than More Data. Very cool production and soundscape in this one. Not much else to say on it, since it's a very soundscape-y song. I may check this album out at some point.

32. Genesis A Trick of the Tail

1. Dance of the Volcano
2. Los Endos
3. A Trick of the Tail

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjRQgTbbfwA

I have a passing familiarity with Genesis, mostly from when Phil Collins was their singer, but it doesnt look like that familiarity encompasses anything from A Trick of the Tail. Some neat prog/mixed meter in the opening track, Dance on a Volcano, which floats rapidly between musical ideas: theres the aforementioned mixed meter but also tone shifts and fadeouts of the guitars and some solos. Collinss singing is clear and strong. Eventually the song turns into chaos before hopping back to something resembling, then back again. This is a very strong opener. It absolutely keeps me guessing.

Entangled is more in line with what I expect from the band: very lyrical and folky, a song you could listen to while moseying around an open field. Oh but then it gets a bit harder (or at least louder) and fuller. I like that Entangled also keeps me guessing. I like the line With your consent / we can experiment / further still. I dont know what its referencing but it flows nicely. Mad Man Moon starts out calm then gets more intense.

The lyrics overall seem like theyre about some Celtic mythology or something. I dont know. I dont need them. Im going off Collinss vocal delivery and emotional range, which is big and versatile. Im getting overall Led Zeppelin vibes from a lot of this album, though different in execution and more contemplative than Led Zeppelins harder rock. Four songs in and every song has shifted and grown throughout, turning my expectations on their head. Its interesting to compare this to, say, the Electric Light Orchestra nomination, which is also prog rock, but I disliked that and I really like this. I guess it shows the genre isnt staid and has room for plenty of different artists and ideas.

I like these songs but Im having a tough time focusing on them, a common issue I have with prog music, specifically prog jazz. Im not somebody who needs a melody all the time, but I feel like I do need something anchoring me; too much shifting often loses me. A Trick of the Tail feels like an album that I like more than the sum of its parts. Halfway through and I cant say I like any individual song on its own, but the actual experience of listening has been cool. My top three feels mostly arbitrary for this reason. The only song I havent enjoyed on some level is Ripples, which I checked out for the entirety of.

Didn't get as much listening done last night as I wanted. The call of Minecraft videos was too strong.

I have absolutely no idea going in if I'm going to like Dream Sweet in Sea Major or hate it! This is definitely a dream-like piece, huh? Some intentional faux-retro vocal stylings making me wonder where and when the fuck I am. I can't imagine myself wanting to throw this one up for easy listening often, but I had to save it if only for how interesting it is.

K-pop can be a hit or a miss, but I think it is more that the fanbase scares me lol. People who approach it like any other musical genre (like rwlh right here) has told me more about this music than the loud members of the fanbase ... Anyway, let's see what Wish has in store ... Ooh I like this. I was worried that little "everything's gonna be alright"(?) line would turn into a rap verse, and then I was immediately disappointed to learn that the song was over already lol

Yooo Gyroscope is really fucking cool. Can't make out the voices in the back, which ... kind of makes this creepy? Are they actually voices??? Oh, it's counting. Yeah, that makes sense. I can see this being part of a score for a horror movie or game. It's almost spooky month y'all! I fucking love the spooky. This is definitely a standout to me.

I don't dislike Heirloom, but it definitely caught my attention more before she started singing. Bjork is interesting to me. I'm kind of surprised by how popular she, considering how unique she is. But maybe it's just that uniqueness that draws people to her? I personally like how well her voice works with the rest of the music.

I'm a nut for stage musicals, but Jesus Christ Superstar doesn't really rank high for me. It's not even like a religious thing, I've started to feel that even after distancing from my faith. And it isn't necessary an ALW thing either, because I think PotO fucks. Or maybe it is, because PotO is the only thing of his I do like ... That being said, I do think JCS still has some bangers, and Simon Zealotes / Poor Jerusalem is a fun one. I like the decision to weave the musical in our modern ideals of what "Christian music" is. Pretty decent.

Didn't expect to reveal so much skulltrumpets lore today, but it is what it is. Gyroscope is probably my favourite this set, but Wish was the most surprising winner. I think I'm going to listen to both these albums eventually (albeit at my own pace bc I share rwlh's struggle with listening to whole albums at once lol)

Ripples is awesome, what are you talking about? It's supposed to take that long because it's about getting old... despite Collins being very young at that time.

That album is the "case in point" that I lead people to when they insist that Peter Gabriel leaving the band was disastrous for them. Those people don't know the real story - it was Steve Hackett who was responsible for that prog rock sound, and Gabriel left after an argument with Hackett about the direction of the band. Gabriel wanted to go pop when the others did not. A Trick of the Tail is probably my favourite Genesis album because it improves upon their sound but is still before they became pop rock. That was after Hackett's departure, which was also after an argument.

31. STAFFcirc - STAFFcirc vol. 8 - circle

1. the long line
2. Calculations
3. Drum Circle

https://sexytoadsandfrogsfriendcircle.bandcamp.com/track/the-long-line

Trying something different with circle. sergio told me that this album is basically a continuous mix without a definite beginning or end. Instead of giving out a top three, or even talking about individual songs, Im going to talk about the album itself as one long, seamless song. Ive provided a top three for completenesss sake but I spoilered it; feel free to ignore it if you wish.

circle starts out energetic, with compelling synths and a delightful melody. Around 5:30 the pace picks up with frenetic movement, slowing down around 7:00 as if the song has run a marathon. What follows is a cooldown with 90s ass sounding synths. The experience in this section is lovely. The melody here isnt as strong, but the powerful electronic strings propel this section forward. Around 8:50 theres a big crescendo that slinks back into more subdued, more tentative territory; the e-strings are particularly evocative here.

Around 9:45 there are CHIMES. I like CHIMES. Chimes and chippy beeps. 10:40 is a mixture of those fake strings but also some chippy stuff too. This section is also contemplative, but Im not connecting with it as much as before. 12:15 introduces some ominous glitch; I really like this section. Its very different from the previous section but the transitions have been pretty seamless. Aaaaaahhhhh the song is getting faster oh nooooo. Really making my heart rate go up! Around 15:30 a new movement arises, transitioning from evil glitch to something resembling the contemplative synths from before, though faster. 16:45 we start a Sonic CD ass part: very pop, some vocals, much love. Something about the preciseness and articulations of the syllables of these calculations in my mind makes me happy. The movement that starts around 19:30 sort of suffers from treading over some of the same ground as before, though I do like the weird time signatures.

23:00 is sudden electronic middle eastern music which seems to come out of nowhere (but still works for me, the surprise is welcome). 25:45 breaks from the energetic pace and turns inward again. Theres an interesting flow to circle, a pull and push between fast and slow. Sometimes the two forces work together. Sometimes they stand apart. But they both exist in harmony all throughout the piece.

30:05 is a nice transition, wow. A very different part of the song, big on beats. Im not as grabbed by circles later parts as I am with the earlier stuff; maybe some more variety would help me there. Of course as soon as I say that theres 32:00, with an intense burst of energy, culminating in some glitch and keyboards. Just when I thought circle was running out of ideas, this happens. Always happy to be proven wrong

We end on the reprise of the first movement, right back where we started. What a cool experience! Im glad for such a nontraditional nomination.

What a cool experience! Im glad for such a nontraditional nomination.

Thank you for listening! Not only is there no definite beginning or end, but the starting point actually varies between the Bandcamp, SoundCloud, and YouTube releases... but I can tell your timestamps apply to the YouTube synclisten video.

Concepts like retreading ground, running out of ideas, or even earlier and later parts are funny for this release, but they're still a fitting way to frame your listening experience. A little behind the scenes info: each of the tracks was made using only the knowledge of the first 10 seconds of the track that would follow it. This means things being repetitive/cohesive throughout was more or less by chance. There are some exceptions: for instance, calculations samples that first 10 second segment of Percolation Station pretty heavily. It's a bit ironic that by the time the real thing came around for you, it had outstayed its welcome! Maybe your ideal listening experience would start at Percolation Station and finish with calculations, so that part becomes a 30-minute delayed callback instead...?

1. And Test,Test,And Test Some More
2. Get Exited!!
3. Be the Adam and Eve of This Stone World

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-8bc9d5Kfs

A long album, if only by song count; almost every song is under three minutes. I expect this to be a brisk and invigorating experience!

Some world music vibes right out of the gate with STONE WORLD, which is super Celtic in nature and indeed evokes brisk and invigorating. The second song, Turned to Stone, is immediately more foreboding, with sparse bells and distant chanting conjuring a picture of something mysterious. Two songs in and Im reminded of VGM in the sense that this is clearly music attempting to convey a larger story as opposed to stand on its own. That isnt inherently a bad thing (of course it isnt, I adore VGM), nor does it change how I approach the work, but if I come to find that Im missing pieces of the bigger audio picture, this might be why.

I could take or leave Beginning except for the last third, which I really really like. From Zero, on the other hand, is a song I adore the beginning of but am ambivalent about the rest. Could we just combine these two songs into something I like all the way through please?

Get Exited!! (sic) finally breaks the trend of me only enjoying part of each song; it is very solid all the way through, with Super Mario 64-esque woodwind samples and more jaunty bagpipes. Now I think Im primed for other parts of the soundtrack Be the Adam and Eve of This Stone World is also very good. Im a sucker for this bouncy style. Getting real Atelier vibes from this flute!

Track 10, The Strongest Primate High Schooler, is by Tatsuya Kato (songs 2-9 are by Hiroaki Tsutsumi); after this the composition bounces between those two and YUKI KANESAKA, who gets four songs. Just based on this song Kato seems to have a more symphonic style than Tsutsumi, but STONE WORLD, also by Kato, isnt like that. And Contrariety (is that a word? ) isnt like that either, so it probably depends on the song. This track sounds super Basiscape. Big fan.

Track 12, And Test,Test,And Test Some MoreI am really into this one. YUKI KANESAKAs first song is the humorously named Chemical Boys Bogie Mix; its the first song with lyrics and has a noticeably funk-infused vibe. Too bad I dont like it all that much D: I dont really like the next one, Strong Desire, by Kato, either. Maybe I was spoiled by the last few songs?

Track 16, Time Limit, brings me back to the good feels. It features a lot of what I love about other songs on the album: breezy notes, a fast pace, and an unexpected instrument in this case, a sax! Thus far almost every song Ive enjoyed is by Tsutsumi, including Senkus Mind, which takes all those things I like and makes the experience downright trippy.

A general note on this album: I would enjoy it more with approximately 100% less rapping. I like rap, just not this variety.

Some of these back half songs seem to struggle with the missing context puzzle. Like Im sure The 100 Tales or TALES FOR THE AGES probably have a lot of impact on the show, but Im having a hard time getting into them, divorced from that. Genz Mood, on the other hand, is super cool and dissonant; I really like this one.

Overall this was a mixed bag. There was a lot that didnt really appeal to me, but there were some heavyhitters. I tended to respond better to Tsutsumis compositions than the others. I looked up a bit of info about this series while listening would you recommend I watch/read?

God this nomination is tickling my fancies. My fancies are quite tickled. This New Agey house/world music style has long been a source of enjoyment for me. I enjoy everything about Deep Forest, the first song on Deep Forest, by Deep Forest the beat, the gravelly child singing, the panning around the other vocals, the synths that just take off like nobodys businesseverything about this is super me. We are off to a great start!

Song 3, Hunting, is also really solid. Lots of great sounds: something that sounds like a bird call, tribal percussion, vocals of various pitches and effects. This song is ear candy to my brains mouth. Songs 1 and 3 have been faster paced and songs 2 and 4 have been slower, and Ive definitely enjoyed the faster paced ones by, like, a lot. I havent disliked songs 2 and 4; Im just that much more into 1 and 3.

By song 6, Savana Dance, Ive unfortunately soured a little on the music. Its not bad, but nothing has really grabbed me like Deep Forest (the song from the album by the band). I would love some more faster-tempo, twirling through the sky house, but Im not sure if Im going to get that.

White Whisper: hEY-ey-EY-ey-EY-ey-EY-ey-EY-ey-EY-yeah to you too, buddy. This ones cool. I think Im just a sucker for chopped up vocal samples like this. This song sounds like something out of Sonic CD (JP). Really this whole album sounds like something out of Sonic CD (JP).

So yeah, this is an album that had one absolutely killer song, some other things I liked, and a lot of neutral. Nothing I disliked, which means this automatically goes above a lot of the competition, but still, it was such a disappointment that Deep Forest (the album by the band) never comes close to the highs of Deep Forest (the song from the album by the band). Maybe I would have liked things more if I wasnt led to believe they would be better than they were. Death by overachievement, its a real problem.
