57 Albums: A Postpostmortem
And that's a wrap! Congratulations to azuarc for "winning" the ranking, though I'd argue rankings are less about winning and more about sharing music. I genuinely enjoyed a lot of the nominations and found something to take away from even the ones I didn't. Sincere thanks to all the nominators and those who followed along, either via listening or commenting or quietly reading and judging my taste

I don't have much else to say! It's been real. I'm always looking for new suggestions for ranking topics, so if you have any, feel free to share! I might do something different from music for the next one, so if you have any burning desires you'd like me to indulge in, let me know.

Until next time!

Oh and I'll also say that I hope folks who started listening through the ranking keep doing so - the topic isn't even close to full yet so you've got a nice window (not that you need the topic at all but it's at least a tangible marker).

I am SO absolutely thrilled and overjoyed you loved SUBJECT TO CHANGE as much as you did! I admit, when I nominated it, I was quite iffy on you enjoying the lyricism and was pretty sure it would come in around the midway point but then the rankings just kept dropping and dropping and it was going the distance!

I am pretty quite obsessed with this album, to be honest! Though it only came out a year ago, it's already my most played album ever according to what I use to track my listening (started it 5 years ago). It genuinely made this year suck a lot less for me. When things started feeling really shitty, KB's wit, heartfelt emotion, & being unapologetically herself (which you've all highlighted as well) came through for me with some really damn fun and catchy instrumentation too. Like, the drumming on this album especially is among the best I've heard on a country-pop album if you ask me. And yeah the little genre experimentations throughout, there's a good bit of rock-based songs here too, some trip-hop, folk, it really keeps you guessing on the first listen. It harkens back to what I love so much about Fearless / Speak Now era Taylor, where every song was just a little treat in its own right.

So yeah, I'm super happy I nominated it now and I also recommend the EP follow-up Rolling Up the Welcome Mat which is like a spirtual successor to DOIN' MY BEST and discusses her divorce more. It's really dark and melancholy compared to SUBJECT TO CHANGE though.

Oh I was a bit surprised there was no mention of HEARTFIRST, which is definitely my favorite song on the album! The chorus soars, so upbeat, so cute! Instrumentation just shimmers with anticipation and excitement too. What a perfect song about love at first sight.

Great topic and lots of new stuff for me to listen to. Definitely putting the top 10 in my rotation. I like Dark Side of the Moon a lot, but I honestly think it's kind of mid for Pink Floyd. It's such a consistent record and flows so well that I can't argue against it being one of their best though. Then some of Pink Floyd's more inconsistent albums, like A Momentary Lapse of Reason, have some of my all-time favorite songs by them.

For more consistent albums I like more than Dark Side, I highly recommend checking out Wish You Were Here, The Wall, and The Division Bell (this one is probably my favorite).

Also I just realized never listened to The Endless River when it came out. I should probably do that, though I'll keep my expectations low.

Normally I don't like arrange albums that much, because they're either way too close to the original, or they go for the "x song but in x genre" thing, and it's almost always not nearly as good as the original. Sapphire Ridge was not that. Both versions are pretty relaxing, but the original is significantly more upbeat, and the arrangement is very ambient, yet full in the mix. The mixing is so good, probably better than the original song's mix. I still have the main soundtrack in my backlog, but this arrange album might be worth checking out as well.

Leonard Cohen is an artist I've been meaning to get more into at some point. His voice is really good. In this album, his voice is especially gravelly, which is cool. Another interesting thing to note is that this album released about two weeks before he died. You Want It Darker (the song) is really strong, with a strong message, and excellent instrumental with the choral vocals and smooth bassline. Great song. Definitely will add this album along with a few other Cohen albums to my backlog.

The Royal We is probably my all-time favorite Silversun Pickups song! That or Circadian Rhythm. But it's more kind of the back to Circadian Rhythm/Tapedeck/Latchkey Kids trio that is so good on Better Nature. Agreed that Swoon is maybe still their best as well.

But yeah I also really like the band (wouldn't quite put them as a favorite band of mine) and I haven't listened to a decent chunk of their work. Finally did a couple of listens of Neck of the Woods and it's great, but I need more time with it. Like I said I could never do a topic like this. It would take me a year.

Good topic! Shoutout to rwlh for the great writeups and to everyone taking the time to do their own listens.

Glad my nom brought you out of your comfort zone but still landed as high as it did. Their concert last week was awesome, super high energy and the pit went off.

They also dropped an Imagine Dragons cover a couple days ago which I did not have on my bingo card for them.

Wildflowers (Exhale Efreet) is pretty cool. The vocal effects in the intro are great and the vocals in general are very smooth and pleasant to listen to. The vibraphone is another highlight in the mix for me. Love the drop and increased intensity in the second half as well. Great song, and I think I'd enjoy this album as a whole, but it's not something I plan on listening to any time soon.

I listened to all of Peace Beyond Passion last week and it was really good neo-soul. Me'shell's voice is awesome and the instrumentals are a delight. My personal highlights from the album were The Way and Who Is He and What Is He to You, but I liked pretty much every song in the album, including Make Me Wanna Holler. Glad at least one of the nominated neo-soul albums did well here.

BOST nominations have ended so I can go back to doing this. I'll try to listen to at least one of these songs a day from now on, even on busy days.

Unfortunately, I've read every comment posted in here, so my judgment of Brand New is tainted going into Handcuffs. I'll try to be as objective as possible, but sorry in advance if I don't enjoy this as much as I should. Anyway ... This song goes right into it, huh? Some real quiet intensity we have here. I love music that's like ... subtly scary like this. Like you can still zone out to it. I still managed to enjoy this one quite a bit.

Rainforest Collapse III is really cool. The super weird spacey intro was my favourite section, but despite liking the beginning more than the middle and end, this was still a satisfying listen. I will definitely check out the rest of this album.

Holy fuck End of the Line is so gloomy, but not in a way that feels like a drag. A feat for a song that clocks at just over 9 minutes long. It managed not to feel that length either, though I guess I could have done without the fade out ending. As this is a concept album, I'll withhold my judgment if it makes more sense in-context, but I usually don't like em!

Never realised how inspirational Scatman (ski-ba-bop-ba-dop-bop) is. Whoops. Like my guy took his stutter and turned it into an absolute banger. What a legend. What a chad. And the thing is, the song is also really fucking great in a feel good way. Love it. Definitely a great one to revisit.

What the fuck I actually like TOUSOU (Run Away)... Like really really like!!! I was worried this was gonna be a fusion of different things I really dislike (Japanese female vocalists can be hit or miss), but somehow ... it's fun??? Idk if it's just the novelty of seeing irl anime girls growl like grown men or what - but it was great. It was fun. I hope these ladies continue to find success.

IF YOU GO DOWN (I'M GOIN' DOWN TOO) is a bit too country for me. Country is one of the most difficult genres for me to get into, but I did like this album more than I expected to. I imagine if rwlh and I were to post our rankings for the tracks for this album, our rankings would be nearly reversed. I enjoyed the more poppy elements, and less the country elements in the album. My favorites were SUBJECT TO CHANGE, MUSCLE MEMORY, WEATHER, and HEARTFIRST.

On the Run is another one I would put near the bottom of my ranking for its respective album lol. Breathe (In the Air), Time, Money, Us and Them, and Brain Damage are the definitive highlights for me, especially Money's legendary 7/8 bassline. Great album to win this whole thing, even if I like other Pink Floyd albums better.

Finally got through the top tracks from all 57 albums. There were a lot of great discoveries for me throughout. Prior to this ranking, I was familiar with 12 of the albums, and during the ranking I listened to an additional 11 albums, all of which I enjoyed to varying degrees. The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me was my favorite album I listened to, and Limousine was my favorite individual song discovered. I'm grateful for this topic indirectly exposing me to lots of cool music. Thanks for doing this, rwlh, it was fun to follow along. I may do a similar topic to this one at some point.

Would have posted yesterday, but I accidentally skipped over a song and didn't realise until I was about to go to bed oops.

The instrumental work in Mean Spirits immediately catches my ears. I'm a little disappointed that the vocalist doesn't have a voice I instantly love. Kind of... softer? than what I expected. I'm digging it as I go on. Think his voice is better when there's more intensity behind it. Good stuff, I'll be giving this more listens for sure.

It Hasn't Happened yet is so bizarre. I didn't expect Captain fucking Kirk to talk into my ears for like three and a half minutes straight when you first made your nomination topic. I don't know how to feel about this. Shatner??? Are you okay my guy?? This certainly was an experience!

Going from having my ears tickled to whatever the hell TRASHFIRE VISCERAL is. I remembered to adjust my volume before listening, so my views so far are positive. I wish it had more of a melody going for it, but this noise is actually kind of nice to zone out to.

Interesting set of songs. Very tonally at odds with each other.

Listened up to the top 20 in full, just haven't found so much time to write recently

Boards of Canada - Geogaddi
- A record I'm very familiar with, another close listen reaffirms how I've always felt - it's frontloaded and as a total experience I prefer its predecessor. Still, BoC's unique flavor makes some of that front load indispensable to my library. I think Julie and Candy is the masterpiece here, there's so many cool textures and layers with all the distorted woodwind fragments, and the dynamic percussion keeps the energy flowing the entire time. Good headphones really bring out the cavernous low end to this one. I don't go back to Geogaddi much in total but I've hit up this one song hundreds of times.

Bjork - Vespertine
- Big fan of this one, the harp-stricken alien winter aesthetic is gorgeous and if it's a 'concept' album it's just a great proclamation of love. A really sensitive, fragile record ornamented with spectacular detail. For me Unison, Hidden Place, and It's Not Up To You are the standout tracks. It's a mood, a vibe, a lush sound, a manic pixie dream girl, a canal, Panama. Bjork is a true original here.

Tim Rice & Andrew Lloyd Webber - Jesus Christ Superstar
- I thought I knew this, but halfway through I realized what I knew was called Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and this is a separate thing. And I fucked up and listened to the wrong version (whatever Spotify defaults to, not the Australian version) but I just don't have it in me to go through it again. The last instrumental piece John Nineteen Forty-One was by far my favorite, it was good to end on a more traditional liturgical sound.

Barenaked Ladies - Gordon
- BnL is one of those bands I always knew by radio hits but never gave them the time of day at the CD aisle. I liked this more than I expected, the light-hearted spontaneous energy works for me. There's a part in If I Had a Million Dollars where they adlib a bit about buying Dijon ketchup, and it made me think that's what this band is. Ironically sophisticated ketchup. Hello City and Brian Wilson left good impressions with some nice vocal harmonies. Apparently, these guys are still releasing music in 2023, might be fun to check out where they are now 30+ years later.

Binzokomegame Girl's Union - Taiten Mythologia
- The buckwild end of Bhutesha's Silentroom got me going. That's the keeper for me, the rest can be somebody else's treasure.

Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas
- Not my favorite of the 90's shoegaze/dreampop/whatever you want to call it canon, but it's short and sweet and easy on the ears. A strong opener and closer helps it feel complete, and strong earworms in the back half like I Wear Your Ring and Road, River, and Rail keep it building a head of steam instead of dissipating into a cloud of ethereal vapor.

Jacob Collier - Djesse Volume 3
- I've been following this guy for a while now, and I kind of get why he's a divisive figure in music circles. He's an undeniably gifted musician, technically proficient and hyperliterate...it's like he has this incredible vocabulary yet he doesn't really have anything to say with it. This is the third time I've listened to this record and it's so well-produced but barely any of it sticks. The catchiest tracks were Runnin' Outta Love and All I Need just because the keyboard part sounded like an Al Jarreau song. And it's nice to hear Rapsody in a different context on a track like He Won't Hold You. I think JC's best stuff is still in his cover arrangements for now.

Green Day - American Idiot
- Another record I appreciated more via list order, because unlike previous British Genius at least American Idiot tries to say something. Not that it really succeeds, for being a politically-branded record I think it's relatively feeble and toothless in its social commentary. But I'll be damned if Billy Joel Armstrength can't sing just enough of a hooky melody to keep every other tune stuck in my craw. Granted, the radio campaign for this album was practically unavoidable at the time and drilled a few into me involuntarily - I was never a fan of Green Day growing up, but listening to the full album for the first time 20 years later, I have to give those hit singles their due. Holiday, Wake Me Up When September Ends, and Boulevard of Broken Dreams still hold up while Whatsername is an immediate favorite that I hadn't heard before. I think it's funny how the album indulges slightly loftier ambitions for a pop punk band - the fussed over sequencing w/ 'two-part' songs, the 8-minute multi-movement opus, the little *presents* between the band name and album title. It doesn't feel ironic and it's sort of endearing.

I gotta remember to listen to some of these albums!

Glad you enjoyed Crash; I don't know any other DMB songs outside this one album and, obviously, have made zero attempts to branch out, but I just really enjoy the album on the whole. It's just a great mood for getting through chores, drawing, coming out of a bad mood, pondering, enjoying an hour of doing nothing. "#41" is absolutely one of my favorite songs as well, and glad to see everyone commenting on it too. "Too Much" might be my second but everything really does blend together.

Mouth Moods is amazing, and "T.I.M.E." is such a transformative piece. "Bustin'," "Annoyed Grunt," and "AC/VC" all regularly get stuck in my head. Like others said, definitely check out Mouth Silence, though I think Mouth Dreams has a strongest front half of all of them.

Real life issues still forcing me to take this slow, but I will persevere!

I know I was told that I would love wurmple_658385643478450179 and it was a correct assessment. This song has pleasant bubbly pops and crunch that tickles my ears and makes them happy :) I am awful for taking so long to complete this when a song I KNEW I'd like would be upcoming.

I'm not an expert on Red Hot Chili Peppers, but I know I find the vocalist to be a hit or a miss with his distinct voice, and really idk what the science is behind this because I've definitely enjoyed vocalists people hate in the past... Under the Bridge manages to avoid irritation. Quite the opposite really. I admit that I kind of ended up zoning out a little, enjoying the hypnotic and melancholy feel of this track. Really really good. Consider myself pleasantly surprised.

Some very brief thoughts on a few tracks or albums:

Listened to the first half of Passengers, the Cryptovolans album. Pretty neat, though "Test of Ascension" definitely feels a bit long... still, I want to try to finish the rest of the album later.

I've loved T.I.M.E. for years, so I'm glad to see it rated so highly. I should probably relisten to the album; I tried it once, but was disappointed that none of the other tracks went for the emotion or power of T.I.M.E.--I might be more in the mood for the album now and less likely to judge it for what it isn't.

The CrossCode arrange song is pretty, I may try checking out the rest of that album later as well.

Meshell Ndegeocello's album seems incredible. Powerful lyrics & good grooves; also something I want to check out the next time I'm looking for a more emotionally charged album.

"IF YOU GO DOWN (IM GOIN DOWN TOO)" is fun in that playfully twisted way that I often enjoy, very nice pick there.

"On the Run" also reminds me of Delta, so I'm pretty pleased that we had essentially the same reaction.

-

And I'm finally caught up on everything. A very belated thank you for running the topic, it was fun.

I'm still in this rut where I have a mile long backlog of stuff to do, but that doesn't mean that I've given up on catching up.

Crash Into Me is another song with a vocal style I'm not too jazzed about. Maybe it's this combined with the lyrics, which feel a little creepy in spots? I dunno, maybe I'm just not in the mood.

Not at all surprised to see that I like Deck the House. The sampling is so cool, something I seem to always like. So head bopping!!!!! It's a very "groove to while you study" type of song. I really like this one a lot. It's very me!

I was worried that Make it Stop (September's Children) would be too depressing considering the subject matter, but to me it straddles that line well. Takes serious subject matter, well, seriously, but has enough of a hook to it that I want to sing along or bob my head. Powerful stuff. I haven't ranked the songs I've listened to but I feel like this could be a top ten contender.
