I'm reading Larry Niven's The Mote in God's Eye. In this 1974 book's chronology, the Alderson Drive was invented in 2008, and the Great Exodus to the first interstellar colonies began in 2020.

Will you be among those leaving Earth to settle on new worlds?

Nope.

Maybe if the planets had been around, fully explored and researched, and actively settled for thousands of years, I'd consider it.

But as is I'm not even willing to move to Europe, let alone being the first to trailblaze a new frontier. I've never been much of a neophile, and I hate camping and nature and "roughing it", so a planet without infrastructure is pretty much the definition of hell for me.

I'm also not super-keen on signing up for a settlement mission where you're pretty much flinging yourself into the abyss and hoping everything goes right, and there's a high likelihood you're going to fail and you and everyone with you is going to die (quite possibly in some gruesome ways).

200 years ago, I wouldn't have been one of the people on the Oregon Trail. 500 years ago I wouldn't have been one of the people traveling to the New World. I'm too old and not desperate/unsatisfied enough to want to throw literally everything away and try to start over.

The only real problem with this planet is the humans.

No matter what other planet you can possibly go to, you'll always be bringing that problem with you.

I remember when I thought nuclear fusion was the key to interstellar space travel because tech science channels hyped it up like that.

Now that I understand the science from real scientists, nuclear fusion is like the least space efficient form of energy production and isn't going to fly us anywhere or even be used to produce energy at all, because the whole point is that it happens incredibly slowly to not burn out stars immediately, and the human body outputs like 100* more energy in heat than the sun does for the same amount of space.

So, uuhh, maybe we have made a lot of optimistic assumptions about the short term future of space travel

Hey, the man wasn't wrong.

This is the point where I'd link to a video on YouTube from Red Dwarf back in the 80s where Lister makes a comment about how humans are basically a disease, and all the other planets avoid Earth because "Eww, she's got humans!"... but I've tried to find that one before and never seem able to.

EDIT: Tracked down a transcription:

LISTER: Why does it have to be such a big deal? Why cant it be like, like, human beings are a planetary disease? Like the Earths got German measles or facial herpes, right? And thats why all of the other planets give us such a wide berth. Its like, Oh, dont go near Earth! Its got human beings on it, theyre contagious!

Yes, but humans start fucking up wherever they happen to be about 30 seconds after arriving.

And if we're going to be honest, humans won't completely fuck up this planet until after I'm dead, so that's pretty much a wash.

Ok, but you do realize that the U.S. and Canada are comparatively the new frontier compared to Europe, whose countries have been around much longer, right? Also, Europe in general is overall much safer than the U.S., if you compare the crime rates. And yes, this even includes much of eastern europe, despite current events....

Not really true. If you live here on earth in an overly cold or overly hot area*, the only thing keeping you comfortable, and at many times, ALIVE, are other humans and their technology. So I would classify dying as being a problem, so you kind of messed up with this post. Gamefaqers arent very good overall at accuracy, so dont feel bad, youre not alone on this forum when it comes to severe mistakes like this.

*Im not even bringing climate change into this, Im just talking about regular extreme temperatures that have nothing to do with climate change, that are both uncomfortable and deadly for humans, even in otherwise perfectly habitable parts of the earth.

It depends on the circumstances and benefits. If Joe Biden decided to set off all of the US's nukes tomorrow and the world's surface was irradiated, suddenly a space colony looks more attractive.

Granted, if it's a Superman-type situation where the new planet makes me virtually immortal and OP as hell, that's an easy choice.

Zareth posted...

Leave it to the human ego to believe that humans can "fuck up" a planet. A planet is a giant rock ball floating in space. We don't have the technology (yet) to shatter an entire planet. And I sometimes doubt that humanity as a species will ever band together and create the kind of technology needed to actually fuck up planets. Instead, we may have always have to settle for minor cosmetic damage.

Alternatively, you could just recognize that when people say things like that, they're talking about making the planet inhospitable for human life (usually just to such an extent that survival would require a substantial shift in how we live, not fully overwhelming humanity's adaptive capabilities and causing extinction), not actually blowing it up.

Just because you cant or wont visit other countries, doesnt mean that youve made a good point here. Repeatedly insisting that you either arent able to or dont want to travel to another country hardly helps your argument here. In fact, it hurts whatever point youre trying to make here, which doesnt seem to exist, anyway.

Absolutely fucking true.

I already proved that youre wrong, so absolutely not true. This is an example of your ideology failing you. Since humans arent the ONLY problem with earth, theres no way that youre right here. Its also debatable if humans IN GENERAL are really a problem. Individual humans can be a problem? Yes. Humans in large groups are a problem? Yes. Humans existing as a whole, being a problem? No real proof of that. That just sounds like your ideology failing you yet again.

Disease, dangerous insects, invasive species, parasites, tsunamis, extreme weather temperatures (not even climate change, just regular extreme temperatures). And another planets might have all or some of these things, possibly (probably) even worse. So no, humans arent the only problem. Theyre the only problem from what, the perspective of a tree? Are you and @ParanoidObsessive a tree?

Only a brainwashed ideologue would disagree with this. One who puts everything else ABOVE humans, which makes no logical sense, especially if were also talking about other planets. Why do you have an emotional attachment to other planets, and an obligation to one, above yourself and your species? LOL. What a user base on this website.

Most planets would need to be made hospitable for human life before we could make them inhospitable for human life.

And even with Earth, you'd have to substantially try to make it inhospitable, because the environment is pretty good at recovering or only maintaining that harm in small ways.
