It's weird I'm the one asking people to be nice these days and trying to lead by example. Try going back in time 10 years and saying that.

Again, this isn't a matter of "nice" because being glad Eiko went out isn't a referendum on what I think of Robazoid. I just don't like Eiko, and it's fine that he does.

Like if you want to congratulate someone on a good run, sure, but I don't feel obligated to be apologetic when someone goes out. I don't expect people to do it for me. Like if you're just doing it to play the "game," I don't see the point because I don't think it helps.

And yes, I know among the fandom at large, FFVIII is a popular game, but it does have vocal detractors. But at this point in my life, it doesn't bother me because that's, just, like, their opinion, man, and it doesn't say anything about me as a person that they dislike my favorite thing.

So yeah, I'd rather people just be honest about their likes and dislikes, and you can still congratulate someone doing well with a character you dislike if you choose.

Yeah at this point I like to play it up when people dislike Zell or Selphie or whoever because it's fun, but I'm at peace with what I like

Yeah, I'm aware - I've reported on it. It's cool we have that data from Japan.

The last few top 10s I've seen on YouTube or in some random article consistently places ff8 lower than some combination of 6,7,9,10.

And very often with some kind of preamble of it being "divisive" or "the black sheep". It's not us! (That and it's historically been the case on b8, maybe not so much recently)

I think it's fair to say FF8 isn't the most beloved, yeah! It's weird, I still see a lot of people treat FF6 as some forgotten masterpiece, have you noticed that? It seems to have finally died down a bit, but man, for the longest time I saw that sentiment everywhere.

It's not forgotten if everybody's talking about it being forgotten!

FF6 was THE cool guy game. I guess it became slightly less well known when the PS1 games became old, but it's hard to imagine any non Nintendo SNES game having more reach than that or chrono trigger.

I don't mean to imply that ff8 was always top 5 either though.

All things considered, Japan's got taste imo.

Their food is impeccable to be sure

I definitely am familiar with FF8 being ranked in the the bottom tier of final fantasies here although i really think of it back in like 2000s era, before the modern era of (single-player) final fantasy that gets more shit or indifference

at least until 16 which I mostly hear positively about, although it doesn't seem as widely played so it kinda feels like the people who play it are people more inclined to like it rather than past FFs that they were the big game everyone had to play

but coming back to FF8, although I'm totally familiar with hate for the game itself, I can't really think about much hate about its characters. Squall gets teased for being the guy that says "whatever" but I dunno much stronger than that

Yeah, my understanding has been that the VIII characters are viewed as more forgettable than disliked.

Rinoa used to get a lot of hate back in the day, but for whatever the reason, it feels like she's turned it around over time.

Regardless, I don't think there's a single character who generates a lot of hate from the cast anymore, although Irvine was bottom ten in STATS for a long time!

IX feels like the game that has really turned the corner on reputation

used to be the weakest of the PS1 games to now its definitely past VIII and may be one of the more cultish fanbases

babys first RPG does a lot for a reputation!

See this here proves my point. If anyone really loathed the vast majority of VIII's cast rather than being meh on them they'd probably care to support the one character that shares their beliefs! Seifer's poor finishes and the fact that he's been eligible for like half a dozen contests now and hasn't made one means no one really hates VIII's cast.

Meanwhile there is a single user that has iced Wakka out of qualifying for the contest TWICE now. That is some dedicated vitriol!

Drak was the Seifer fanboy who helped keep him afloat, so his absence probably hurts him more than anything.

New plan, SMFFFC tag team competition, 50 pairs based on pre-existing game relationships so Seifer and Ultimecia (yeah yeah I know should be Edea but still) get paired. Normal save my rules except when someone is eliminated both characters in the pair are eliminated

Maybe because it's like 70% of the main stuff I support tends to be in boot risk territory but the condolences bug me more than the hate too.

I give condolences because I know how bad it can feel to lose a main and want to express some sympathy to the users who are feeling down. I'm certainly not trying to patronise or pretend I personally care about every single character that has gone out. Never would have thought people would be mad about that, huh!

I dunno to me its always been a nature of the contest and its never felt genuine when I have seen people do it

I'm pretty sure Wakka would be in but Maniac explicitly doesn't nominate him because he wants to avoid another Wakka boot

omnia actually made me think about this before, because FR weapons give the characters a partner to do that attack with and they're often kinda related in a way

like Kain's partner is Aranea, lancers
Krile-Relm, grandchild of another party member
Terra-Kuja, magic users who trance
Tidus-Ceodore, son of a legendary warrior
Yuri-Palom, twin boys
Fusoya-Strago, old farts

although problem is that just because like Strago is the partner for Fusoya's FR, but Fusoya isn't with Strago FR. Strago gets Kimahri blue mage bros
