Gears of War 1?

Im going to say only games that actually felt contemporary when they came out count so no games that felt out of date the moment they released.

Again the games had to feel contemporary first!

Mass Effect 1 is a good shout, especially the Mako sections.

tbf, Mako sections made me drop the game when I originally played it ages ago

breaking point was when I got the Mako stuck in a doorway, I absolutely could not move or get out and had to restart from a far backsave

I don't think Mass Effect 1 aged poorly. The game was always like that. It was very much a game where you put up with the bad parts because the good parts were (and still are) that good. People disliked the Mako sections at release.

I think FFXVI is an interesting one to throw out here. It somehow feels both new and outdated at the same time.

I do think Gears of War 1 is a great answer. It very much felt boundary pushing at the time but the presentation is so emblematic of the mid-2000s that it feels like an artifact, and the cover-based shooting feels especially simplistic these days.

I don't think any of the very recent examples work because the games they are imitating do not feel particularly old. Why bother with FFXVI or Starfield when Devil May Cry 3 and Kingdom Hearts 2 or Skyrim and Fallout: New Vegas still exist and do the same general things better? I don't think the lack of innovation makes something feel old, just underwhelming.

A guess for a game I haven't played: Assassin's Creed 2. Just seems like a lot of modern games have absorbed what the AC-series brings to the table, and I don't know what fans of AC2 when it came out would think upon replaying it now.

My closest example I can think of: don't know that Bastion truly fits, but what once seems very specific and innovative with the narrator discussing your actions now feels much more common. I also had a hard time replaying it a year or two ago.

I suggest you play Fallout 4 and then try to go back to 3 or NV. The formula might be the same, but there's no question that the feel of the game is vastly improved. More fluid engine, more immersive world, tweaks to the UI and battle mechanics where it counts, etc. Fallout 4 definitely does not feel dated compared to its predecessors.

Starfield, once you get over the initial sci-fi hype, feels like a step back from that. There's a period where you think it's the next evolution, until you see past the new bits and the old remains exposed, and you realize that you're playing Fallout 3-3, except without a cohesive overworld.

Throwing some contention out for Mirror's Edge, even though it came out in 2009.

I'm playing it right now for a gaming club and I can see where a lot of modern first person games crib their movement tech from, but everything in it feels really... delayed.

Maybe a weird answer, but I started The Stanley Parable recently and while it's not bad, I think there've been so many "ooh this isn't what it seems" and fourth-wall-breaking narrative games since that it feels a little rote. Enjoyable, but definitely of an era. Probably a lot of first-wave indie games would feel that way for their respective genres.
