I'm all for shitting on Rogan, but AFAIK taking your phone so you can't record the show is something that happens at a lot of comedy clubs these days. Face scans are just insane though.

Don't live in the US, so I can't vouch for it myself. But it's something I've heard mentioned by several comedians as something that's becoming more frequent.

Taking away your phone is a good move.

No interruptions from someone forgetting to silent it. No distracted audience members. No one recording your shit and then putting it on youtube.

Taking phones and not letting hecklers fuck up the show for everybody are not bad things. The facial scan thing is very weird, if true.

Apparently the club has two rooms which are named Fat Man and Little Boy

On the one hand, no phones and not letting hecklers back in is fine.

On the other hand, it's Joe Rogan and the Snowflake Crew doing face scans to make sure no one ever dares to criticize them. The general idea is fine, the implementation and the person responsible make it pretty clear why it's being done.

Ive never seen that at a comedy club but I have had my phone taken away while attending a comedy tour. That makes more sense because the tour show is usually going to be put on streaming and they dont want people recording it and posting it on YouTube beforehand.

I've been to some non-snowflake-y comedy shows recently where it happens as well. It's really only bigger comedians that go on larger tours that do it so they can keep workshopping their material ahead of bigger shows or specials.

Obviously there's a "snowflake" reason to do it in not wanting people to know you're talking nonsense, but there's also a practical reason in that they don't want their material to get out so they can still sell tickets without the audience having already heard the jokes.

I fucking loathe Joe Rogan but he has done a lot for comedy in Austin, he's a stakeholder in several places downtown that are really great.

Comedy is getting so popular here that every brewery in town has a stand-up weeknight event now.

Ive had to put my phone in a special bag at every big stand up set Ive been to in the past few years.

I see no problem with not allowing recording.

The facial scan thing is weird.

I go to Last Stand's shows all the time. If you haven't been, check out the shows at Monk's Jazz Club on the east side. It's BYOB and the room is only about 20x20, but it's a fun show even if the host isn't very funny at all.

I guess Kevin Hart is a snowflake comedian because when I saw him last summer we had to lock our phones in pouches fir the duration of his set. He was working on his new special and didnt want the jokes to be leaked.

A LOT of the big time comics are doing this. Especially if they have a special coming up.

I will say, I do enjoy seeing hecklers get owned at shows.

Them being permanently banned is even better.

Comedy shows are great, enjoy your minimum required 2 drinks and let the comics do their thing. There's no need to shout shit at them and ruin the experience for everyone else.

About the "woke" stuff:

Masterful comedians can tell offensive, stereotyping jokes and still come out unscathed... Joan Rivers did it all the time. Thing was, though, she was laughing with her audience, not punching down at them... she loved to make fun of herself and old people in her act.

People like Joe Rogan can't do that because they suck at comedy, then when they bomb big time, they wanna whine that it's because the audience was woke. There's a reason why this guy isn't known for his standup and never has been.

Crowd work is an acceptable part of comedy in which, under the right circumstances, the crowd is invited to join in with the comedian. They yell out things to the comedian specifically so that the comedian can react and there is a back and forth with audience members. These are planned in the routine. The comedian knows these sections are coming, and will often make it obvious that it's a crowd work bit. In this scenario, it is fine to "heckle", as it's something built into the routine and the comedian likely has canned responses to audience members or is really good at improv. It's a fun way to engage with the crowd in a controlled manner.

If this isn't happening, and you're just spewing whatever drunken garbage comes to mind because you're bored, then you can fuck all the way off. Leave the show if you're that disintrested in the routine. Nobody wants to hear your drunken ass. Nobody cares about your shitty jokes. Nobody paid money to see you. So shut the fuck up and let the person everyone else came to see do his job.
