"Our planet has just endured a season of simmering the hottest summer on record. Climate breakdown has begun"

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/hottest-summer-on-record-2023-un-says-climate-change-global-warming-data/

They have finally run out of hopium words to soften the blow and are calling it what it is to some extent. Even if they make some desperate attempt at the very end to end with a hopeful sentence of "we can still avoid the worst, [but] don't have a moment to lose."

We of course, will just keep doing what the oil companies want until we lose our breadbaskets, and little will be done. Why? Because it is ALREADY TOO LATE and we are STILL DOING BASICALLY NOTHING.

Even the main stream media that has been only posting conservative climate change estimates until now are starting to actually report that things are getting very bad, very fast, and even major groups like the UN are now actually coming out and saying that the breakdown has begun, instead of their usual sort of "we need to change before 20XX or else." It is now basically "'Or Else' has now arrived and we did nothing to stop it."

May not be what you are referring to, but when I said "conservative estimates" I meant in the non-political definition of the word.

Media has basically been mostly reporting the lowball estimates and brushing off the more worrying predictions as being "Alarmist" for basically 50 years now. Well, since then, reality has tracked with the very things those so-called alarmists predicted, if not being even faster than expected.

It's nice to finally see some honesty

Still doesn't help with how screwed we are though. I really hope we can actually start doing something and start holding people responsible.

Our current model needs to go through some drastic changes. It's just not sustainable like this.

Really not much that can be done. You'd have needed all countries to go cold turkey pretty much, which was never even a possibility. All we can really hope for is the development of technology that can mitigate or reverse it.

This, all day this. It is tragic that this is what has happened to us but this is what happens when a concerted effort has been made to create and maintain an anti-intellectual movement, especially in America.

Yeah, it's a wrap, organizations had just been wrapping it in hopeful optimism for years instead of admitting that we're fucked & just waiting for the final days. Which further cements the fact that no one will be making strident efforts to improve anything if we're already fucked.

Thats because most people live in cities though. On a per capita basis living in a city sounds like it would be better than rural living.

Living in dense locations is environmentally better than everyone spread out all over. Centralization of housing, jobs, services, etc is much better.

Oh we have acts of ecological terrorism every day. Just in the opposite direction, and laundered through so many layers of indirection it's hard to point at them as such.

Airlines shuffling around empty flights with 500 seats to keep their parking spaces is terrorism. Companies demanding everyone who successfully switched to WFH start commuting again just to keep office seats full is terrorism. All advertising is terrorism. And so on.
