Any of you believe that smartwatches could become more popular than regular watches very soon?

I only wear regular watches. Not really a fan of smart watches. I think they look bad and don't need the functionality since I have a phone.

I would assume smart watches are already more popular, though. Most people don't wear regular watches anymore, and I certainly see more smart ones out in the wild.

Definitely regular watches. Much more stylish.

I don't need a device to send me notifications. If I want to check my messages, I look at my phone. And I know how healthy I am without monitoring myself all the time.

It is easier to tell my smartwatch to only buzz for certain notifications than blanket muting everything on my phone.

So my smartwatch can help me not have to pull my phone out by letting me see who is calling, who texted, what was texted, etc or if I feel my phone buzz but not my watch, i know its just an email or some other notification i don't care as much about

I don't call myself that, no.

I have a couple of nice Swiss watches I inherited, but nothing too fancy (value in the hundreds, not thousands). A decent Seiko, and a cheap-ish Citizen Eco drive, which is my everyday watch.

I'd like to get good normal watches at some point, but I have a smartwatch because vibration notifications and especially alarms is a good QoL improvement.

My heart palpitates easily to loud noises, so just setting an alarm on my watch and letting it vibrate at x time is fantastic imo. Not to mention I don't disturb anyone else. Big improvement for my mood in the mornings really.

I like my smart watch. Charging it can be a pain in the dick, but it helps me be more active. The heart rate zone monitoring during exercise helps me maintain the effort I'm looking for. It's helpful on hikes where it's just me and my dog. Bluetooth controls on my wrist when I'm listening to music are nice to have. Seeing who is calling me is nice because I can ignore it without getting my phone out of my pocket. GPS navigation is nice. Bails me out when I need to set a timer for cooking but left my phone in the other room. Waking up to my wrist vibrating is so much nicer than a jarring alarm sound too. Probably some other shit I can't think of. It wouldn't be a huge deal if I didn't have it, but I'm glad I do.

It's not attractive, but then neither am I.

I have a fitbit knock off, which provides me the only two bits of functionality I can imagine being useful in a wrist watch (steps and sleep tracking).

Reasons why I like smart watches:
  • Find my phone feature
  • Easily see the weather
  • Quickly see alerts/notifications even if phone is in different room
  • Can send quick messages if phone is in different room
  • Tracks my sleep
  • Tracks my health
There are some other things I'm sure I'm forgetting, but that's off the top of my head. It's extremely convenient. And it's customizable. My Galaxy Watch5 also lasts 3 days on a single charge.

Smart watches for me only seem handy for sports. I can leave my phone in the car if I get close parking to the court and ride the BT connection for notifications.

But I haven't had a smart watch in a while. Hate the charging upkeep. Outside of then ideal scenarios, I hate having another smart device on me. It's not like I can surf GameFAQs with it.

So I have a G-Shock to at least handle time tracking functions and have peace of mind. I know they have a smart watch, but it's bulky and despite the solar feature, charging every few days vs never is a huge difference.

A traditional wristwatch would be my preference, but in everyday life it's more of a novelty. I don't wear things for the pleasure of being nice things. The stuff I like gets expensive and everyday routines put them at risk of damage.

Ok, so there are cheap watches, doesn't mean they serve any purpose other than wasting money

It's not the 1800s, watches without additional features beyond time telling are a massive waste of money

I honestly don't see the point of smartwatches (although I'm sure that's just me being ignorant of the features).

It's too small to really function as a email device beyond "hey, I got an alert saying I have mail... better check my phone", and I honestly don't think the health measuring features is really all that useful.

Whatelse can it be used for?
Music player?

Smart rings are becoming a thing so maybe

But fair enough, I think what I dislike so much about watches isn't really the watches themselves (even tho I genuinely think they look corny af) but the aggressively stupid "culture" surrounding them even when you go just a tier up from the basic Casio or whatevers

Can you tell me what you use the watch for (no sarcasm)?

I've seen people with the watches, but it really seemed like, beyond regular watch function, they used it to get email notices (they usually took out phone to read / jot down short replies) or to keep track of their heart rate / number of steps they took that day / etc etc.

Ah.
I guess I just can't relate because I keep my phone on me, but I can see the benefits if I didn't.
If they build a phone function into the watch (I guess use a wifi earplug), I guess it could replace the phone for some people.

I don't know if bluetooth earbuds can connect to the watch, but you can definitely make calls on them and talk into the watch. If you get the version with it's own network, you don't even need your phone close to you (provided you added the smartwatch plan on your cellphone plan).

One of my favorite smart watch uses is with Google Maps for driving directions.

I still have the map and audio on my phone, but getting the basic "turn here in x miles" with turn arrows is really nice

Having that available so I can just glance at my watch rather than my phone (my car doesn't have a good place for it to go) is probably a huge safety upgrade

I dont get why someone would need a smart watch if he already has a smartphone in his pocket, other than to take/receive calls from his wrist, which is a rare feature and a separate data plan or Bluetooth connection with a cell phone are needed.
