For home use (coughffcheatsheetscough).

Feels weird, but super convenient. I don't need to have to drive to work and commit fraud, waste, and abuse ever again.

Brother J1010DW is the one I decided to go with. It was only $80! I never understood why my work would buy these shitty ass expensive printers that always would break down like clockwork.

As someone who used to work at Staples, Brother is a good choice. Pretty much as long as you don't get HP you're doing alright.

Watched a few youtube videos and Brother was the one that got the most praise. Small and compact, too. Which is what I was going for. Neat little thing.

If you bought any kind of inkjet, have fun paying another $80 for a new cartridge after 10 sheets.

Read about that. There apparently is a hack. Reset the date to 2012, I think. And then just use a syringe to refill them. Eh, worry about that when I cross that bridge. I don't see myself printing that much.

Edit: Brother is also trying to push their EZ Print subscription. 40 pages/mon for $2.50. 80 pages/mon for $4.50, etc. Then $1 for every 10 pages you go over. This sounds similar to a phone data service.

super convenient
lmfao

Nothing computer related has made me happier than going printer-free over 10 years ago.

I feel like a god every time I stop by the local library and pay 35c a page, and it just works. Only necessary 3-4 times a year but still.

Eh, I can still print for free at work. But Ive been out of work for 2 months due to surgery and I dont feel like showing my face up there earlier than I need to. $80 is nothing. I was expecting to pay upwards of $200.

The printer could cost $500 and it still wouldn't come close to the true cost of printer ownership

You know you can usually print stuff for a small fee at your local library or UPS store. I'm sure there's other options along that line too.

Usually when I need to print I go to staples and they end up letting me do it for free since it's usually only a page or two.

But, cool that you got one! When I worked at my courthouse we always bought Brother Printers because they let us use generic cartridges and the printers themselves were cheap

Yeah, see, that was my problem. I'd open up a cartridge to print...and then the whole cartridge would dry out before I printed anything again. I dunno how many pages I would get if I used it continuously, but I would get so few prints out of a cartridge that it was like paying $10 or more per page.

The syringe thing is a little risky. At the very least, the printer companies really don't like it, but if you're up for trying it, that's better than the alternative.

Inkjet printers are the biggest racket. My family had a laser printer growing up and my mind was utterly blown when I entered the workforce and realized how miserable and scummy printer companies can be, with HP being the worst offender by far. Firmware updates that make it harder to use anything outside of their overpriced proprietary cartridges, refusing to print if any colors run out even if you just want B&W, etc, etc, fuck that.
