I stg I see dog owners try to forcibly take their dog to every space they go in and lie about their dog being a service animal. It happens at my taproom all the time and you can't say anything about it because service animal laws are so unfavorably unfair to anyone but the dog owner. You can just lie and say it's a service animal and the businesses have no choice to believe you because of how fucking tilted the scales are (almost as tilted as me making this post).

Also while I'm mad fuck cyclists here too. Our laws say that if you're riding a bicycle you have to treat yourself as if you're driving a car (no lane splitting, cycling on the wrong side of the road, have to be obey all traffic lights and signs). Every fucking day I see a cyclist nearly cause an accident and get pissed off at motorists for something that wouod have 100% been their fault.

Thats not true. You have every right to request papers that state it is a service animal. I've kicked people out for this before. Normally if the dog isnt a nuisance I don't care but if its barking or annoying other guests I tell them to get the hell out.

A couple of weeks ago a woman in front of me at UPS had an emotional support dog. She asked if I was single and said Im her type. In my head I was like you need emotional support to drop a package off at UPS, hard pass.

Dog was nice but it was an abomination of a corgi/bulldog mix with fucked up legs that never should have been bred.

If that thing comes around you without a leash and it starts acting funny, just call the cops and report an unleashed, aggressive dog that is causing a disruption in the store.

Service animal or not, if they are causing trouble they gotta go.

Seems kinda silly to be illegal to request to see documentation proving that someone employing a special status actually has that status. Thus there's nothing stopping them from simply lying. Though service dogs are usually clearly marked as such (high visibility vest) and their behavior is very controlled.

Yes, but no. Imagine if any other protected class had to provide documentation to exist in a public space. That's not a place anyone wants to go.

The good news is that you can kick people for "emotional support animals" because that's not a thing, as far as the ADA is concerned. "Service animal or get out," can be a policy of any store. But you only get two questions (as above, per Oude's screenshot) to establish that.

Emotional support animals do not have the ADA protection that service animals do. If you ask the ADA questions and they respond to the question about which service the animal provides with "emotional support," businesses may legally ask them to leave the establishment. Good luck having them not throw a fit, though.

Exactly. Like I said if the dog was non-disruptive we would let it slide. The worst was this old lady brought in her chihuahua without a leash and it wouldnt stop barking and snapping at other customers. She threw a hissy fit when I had to ask her to leave.

Calling it discrimination to ask for proof that a dog is actually a service animal before its allowed somewhere that dogs are otherwise not is ridiculous to me. Requiring a handicap parking permit to park in a handicap space is an apt comparison that isnt considered discrimination.

It's a federal law. You are not allowed to ask to see papers, period. Your store policy likely means that if you have another way to find out they're not service animals, such as if you ask and they tell you, but you cannot demand they prove it with documentation.

You may ask:
Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability?
What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?
You are not allowed to:
Request any documentation that the dog is registered, licensed, or certified as a service animal
Require that the dog demonstrate its task, or inquire about the nature of the persons disability
