Currently reading an open access article on a revisionist view on proskynesis by Hugh Bowden which argues that the concerns on the practice of proskynesis and the divinity of Alexander III of Macedon found in Arrian's, Curtius' and Plutarkhos' accounts as framed more in Roman concerns over the divinizationof Roman emperors rather than a genuine reflection of contemporary concerns among the Macedonians of the 4th century.

We all know I'm suggestible to buying flattened and bound dead trees, so what's next?

Going to read Contested Pasts: A Determinist History of Alexander the Great in the Roman Empire by Jennifer Finn which goes over how Roman writers framed the conquest of the Persian Empire by Alexander III of Macedon in a way that tied it to their rise and conquest of the mediterranean. Basically, that it was fate that the Romans would end up the way they did by tying their own history with that of Alexander's. As the paper I linked earlier reads the accounts of Arrian, Ploutarkhos, and Curtis at times reflect the reality of the Romans rather than that of the Macedonians and the episode over proskynesis tells us more about the Romans than the Macedonians of the 4th century.

"Finished" Usagi Yojimbo. Fascinating series that combines manga and comic practices: black and white, feudal Japan setting, single creator, animal-people, basically "endless". The story isn't stagnant after 40 years but some closure to a few of the plotlines/progression of time would have been nice.

Not sure what I'll pick up next, though I have plenty of options.

dabbling in wheel of time and tolkien rereads
got a copy of fahrenheit 451 in the free book box the other day and i'm stoked to read it again
i have another stack waiting with guards! guards!, a couple of steinbeck novels, and this scifi compilation that's so old they were still using "flying saucer" unironically

i read the first malazan book and quite enjoyed it but it was a year or two ago and now i only have the second one. i need a more consistent way to get them in my hands, i wish my library carried it

I'm currently reading two books. My work book is The Stand (I've read it before, so it's easy to put down if I get called to do something) by Stephen King, and at home I'm reading "Fall On Your Knees" by Ann-Marie MacDonald.

I'm loving fall on your knees. Her narrative style that switches between past tense and resent tense was jarring at first, but I've grown to like it. It's also neat how she switches narrative perspectives between characters mid-paragraph.

I admit, it's not for everyone, but hot damn is it great for me.

I disagree. I think he did a good job mimicking Jordans style. You can obviously tell, but I dont think its jarring. I think he didnt know how to handle a character or two at the start, but they all end up well.

Not reading related, but as a follow up: I finished the Flower Carrier by Diego Rivera. Just a school-craftsy thing, Sharpie and crayons, and it was 10x harder than I thought itd be (and took hours) so it has a few mistakes next time itll come out better!!

Its a true size replica, so its the full 48x47~ inches of the original!

I liked it up until Page 87. On Page 87 the major conflict of the novel is going to be resolved. After that, there is no more conflict. It is merely about spaceships flying back and forth. It gets boring at the end

47 pages remain in The Mystery of the Flying Saucers. I have reached the section in which the spaceship arrives at its destination, the origin of a flying saucer. However, there is not going to be a long dialogue with the builder of the flying saucer, because this novel is a humanistic story, not a story about extraterrestials. Then the spaceship shall be sent back to Earth

Still waiting on Glnat Bleach, read some Dying Earth.
So this is evidently where the whole "remember X spells at a time" system you see in the likes of DnD originated.
The scenery description is very vivid, tons of colors and nature imagery...then there's kinda weird/edgy interludes of "Viscera was flung everywhere" and "this warlord corralled a bunch of people into a human pyramid, mused on the uncomfortable mass for 10 minutes, then rode off, never to be seen again"
I just have no idea.
