I thought if it was in the Pacific it was called a typhoon and spun the other way?

Southern Hemisphere they're called cyclones and spin the other way

Hurricane is just a dumb American way to say Typhoon so since it's hitting the US it's a Hurricane

For winds it won't be too big of a problem because the colder waters off California's coast are going to weaken it substantially as it goes north. The real potential hazard is going to be runoff on mountains and flooding into rivers, since dry soil does not absorb water very readily.

Also hurricane isn't a dumb word since it's just another name for the same tropical phenomenon. It's adapted from Spanish who themselves adapted it from the Taino language and people, so a judgment of one being more legitimate than another is kind of silly.

The very rare cyclone that affects South America also gets called a hurricane. Brazil has seen a few in recent years.

East had wildfires. Now west gets hurricanes.

Next, east will get the worst earthquakes, and west will get the worst blizzards.

When Maui was still on fire CNN ran an article about how it wasn't climate change but man made conditions in an unusually dry season.

Pretty much par for the course.

some parts of the West will get as much rain from this storm as they get all year. This might be one of those Katrina type of events where the storm itself is not nearly as bad as the flooding that follows.

So this whole thing pretty much felt like a no-show here in OC. Had some light to medium rain yesterday and today is basically a perfect summer day. The rain we had this last winter was way crazier than this was. Any other SoCal B8ers see anything wildly different?

I remember living through a hurricane once in VA and it didn't seem that bad. No disrespect to those who actually suffer though, maybe my town just took precautions.

The humidity and the rain more towards LA was pretty bad. It was a good comstant rain from what I heard.

But the worst of it definitely stayed east.

Yeah, seems like most of this area got pretty lucky. It swung to the east, so LA only got some rain on and off throughout the day. Not nearly as heavy as recent rains. And now the sun's out bright and shining again.

I guess it feels silly to have made a big deal about it, but it was good to be prepared regardless. If the storm hadn't changed direction it could have been a lot worse.

I think it's much better to be overprepared in these situations.
