Didnt use self-checkout before and everytime I watch this it solidifies my stance even more

I feel no sympathy for comedians in this situation

Most rely heavily on audience participation. So people who work in a grocery store and sit in the front row end up providing them with 5 minutes of material.

Is he a good comedian and this was just a bad night or is it representative of his work?

Love Bill Burr and the bit is good (although not his best). But no, it's not true at all.

eh... i get the principal but i really don't care. if you ask them to have regular check lanes they will only staff two people and i'd rather check myself out on one of 18 self-check lanes than wait an hour for granny smith at one of two regular check lanes and the lady in front of me has a full basket and a coupon book

the store is stealing from me either way since time is money and labor is money, but they steal more in time than they do in labor so i'll just give the labor

Checkers are slower than ever now. The service at most places is totally gutter-tier now. I much prefer doing it myself

Then they've bought alcohol, so an assistant has to come over and enter their passcode. And then it's 'unexpected item in the bagging area'. And then they can't find the pictures for honeydew melon and that cake they got from the bakery. And then they spend 5 minutes fumbling for their Nectar card. And then the search for the credit card begins . . .

I like them since I don't have to interact with anyone. Note this is not something I attacking to workers for, I am sure they are lovely this is a CJ thing.

But I do see his point, I wouldn't have wanted my late grandmother having to use those things. Since sometimes it doesn't seem like any human is open at all .

Why don't they shop for me? Why don't restaurants feed me?

What is the point of me leaving the house and spending money if I have to make any kind of effort on my end?

I'm against self check just because entry level jobs are disappearing and no one gives a single fuck. That said, the corporate overlords determined I should be happy about it so I will be. Not like anyone has a choice.

In my life I've seen many people say "how hard is it to grocery store cashier?". Seeing so many people struggle to scan their own shit makes me laugh.

The physical and mental exertion required for self checkout is near zero. Its not a job. Its a job for the employees because they have to do it for extended periods of time and deal with customers.

I love it for buying a few items. Otherwise its a pain to checkout without a conveyer belt.

bill burr is great but this isn't one of his best bits

I didn't watch the video but I prefer to do self checkout. I know too many people who can't stack things properly and don't want to take the chance of someone putting milk on top of eggs/bread.

I know it's a hard pull for you to swallow but what benefits cooperate overlords at times can also benefit society.

I like self-checkouts, but what bothers me is when I go to a grocery store and...the self-checkout lane is *closed*? Not broken. Not under repair. Just "closed".

That said self-checkout really does have to improve. Sometimes, when you bring a bag of apples, the checkout scanner will accidentally scan the little sticker on the apple that it's not supposed to, and then they have to call someone over to fix it. It's a real pain. But it should be a fixable problem.

Other than that, I like it. It's especially nice if you're only buying a small number of things. Nowadays most stores near me will only have 2-3 people working registers at maximum so it's better to just do it yourself, lest you get stuck behind someone with a massive cart full of stuff

Anyone directing their anger and resentment for self checkouts towards the employees who are just doing their job working them, is a gigantic asshole.

Also, we just got self-checkouts.

And seems like we've been busier every since, even for summer...

Nobody has ever cared about it aside from the people that lost them. But really, is it a benefit to society and if so how is it? I would really like to hear how straight up losing most of those jobs benefits people, especially the unskilled or low education sorts likely to get in to those jobs.

No it fucking isn't. Entry level jobs are disappearing because young morons aren't showing up to work. I worked in a grocery store WITHOUT self checkouts and of the 21 people we had scheduled to show up, only 3 actually showed up. If parents would get off their asses and parent for a moment, those jobs would still be there. We had to install self checkouts to deal with the excess bloat that came with teenagers not showing up to work.

I know that isn't the case everywhere, but that's the case in the majority of the retail stores I've worked at.

I wouldn't be surprised if they start asking for tips at checkout soon.

But there's a reason to that. Younger people I know are making money(most peanut level incomes being perfectly honest) through streaming, TikTok, and gig work. The important part is they can support themselves with flexible schedules. If people don't show up to work(granted there are just tremendously lazy people too) it means there isn't an incentive to do so. Companies refuse to adapt to an evolving job market, and just cut whatever won't work on the same old way.

I've legit seen a tip request at self checkout, not the donate to a thing one, just add a tip... So, yeah.

I dug Bill years ago, but I cant see him as anything more than a weird douche after watching some interviews.

I've never minded self checkout.

It usually goes a lot faster. When it doesn't it leads to some interesting people watching moments where multiple people are standing there watching bafflingly slow people try to figure out how to scan their items and then use their credit card.

I love comedy, a huge standup fan, love all the big ones, but for whatever reason, Burr never did it for me. I'm truly unsure why. He seems to check all the boxes, but I just don't find him funny. I've found him funny in things, like Crashing he was funny in, and other roles I'm forgetting, but idk, I just don't care for his standup. Perhaps it's his voice. Too high pitched for me to get into it.

After working as a self checkout associate, I've realized 90% of complaints are born from incompetence and 5% entitlement/refusal to change. Shit isn't that difficult to operate, especially nowadays. And people who worked my position are there to walk you through it if you're unsure.

And yes we want to help, we fucking do nothing else

I hate self checkout. I actually appreciate a well packed bag and i just prefer the human interactivity. I also rarely ever had a bad employee when i went.

I do sympathize with old people that clearly have some cognitive decline along with people that are trying to keep their kids under control.

I sometimes wonder if people who complain about self checkout 'not working' have ever worked a till themselves.

My experience is that they both don't always scan etc, or have to manually put something in.

Yeah, 'incorrect weight' when you add something that weighs a little less/more than it is meant to is annoying but it takes 2 seconds for staff on hand to scan their card and click accept.

Is just annoying if only one staff on hand, but you'd be waiting anyway if only one till open.

He's out of touch like most people his age. Stores are converting to completely self-checkout and there is no stopping that train

The biggest reason why I like self checkout is it is much faster. But another reason I prefer it is I usually get annoyed at how baggers will bag my groceries.

Dont put just one item in a bag. Dont put bread at the bottom of a bag. Dont put something lopsided at the bottom of the bag, causing stuff to spill out of it. I much prefer to do my own bagging.

Have you been in hibernation since the industrial era? Those workers have never had trouble adapting, being assigned new task in their current job or finding a new one entirely. Hell our nation currently is at almost full employment. Frankly reality isn't reflecting your belief at all.

A very dangerous belief that's lead to stagnation in 3rd world country's because they refuse to automate their crappy sweat shops and create newer and better jobs for workers.
