Disneys live-action Snow White might not be coming out until 2024, but titular star Rachel Zegler has already made it clear that viewers need to be prepared for a very different retelling. In a recently resurfaced video of the actress speaking to Extra at the 2022 D23 Expo, Zegler said of the movie, I mean, you know, the original cartoon came out in 1937 and very evidently so. Theres a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. She then laughed and added, Weird! Weird. We didnt do that this time. Zegler also clarified, We have a different approach to what Im sure a lot of people will assume is a love story just because we cast a guy in the movie, Andrew Burnap, great dude. Its one of those things that I think everyones going to have their assumptions about what its going to be, but its really not about the love story at all, which is really, really wonderful. When Zeglers comments resurfaced this week, they predictably sent conservatives and ardent Disney fans alike into a rage.

While sharing a video of the interview, right-wing author and noted transphobe Matt Walsh tweeted, Disney is trying a really interesting marketing strategy where the star of the new Snow White spends a year before the movies release publicly talking about how much she despises Snow White. This isnt the first time Zeglers thoughts on the movie have sparked controversy and major feelings. She joined co-star Gal Gadot for an interview with Entertainment Weekly at the same event last year, and the pair covered everything from world leadership to not being saved by a prince. As Zegler explained at the time, The reality is that the cartoon was made 85 years ago, and, therefore, its extremely dated when it comes to the ideas of women being in roles of power, and what a woman is fit for in the world. Fascinatingly, it appears the reason conservatives are poring over year-old comments this weekend is due to Zeglers more recent commentary about the SAG-AFTRA strike. While speaking to Entertainment Tonight earlier this month, she said, If Im gonna stand there 18 hours a day in the dress of an iconic Disney Princess, I deserve to be paid for every hour that its streamed online. YouTuber Amala Ekpunobi tweeted in response, Entitlement at its finest. What a lovely attitude for the woman meant to be playing Snow White.

Looks like she is the new Brie Larson.

In this case it's kind of stupid, not that I'd ever watch the movie regardless. Snow White got her name because she was white af.

This would be like remaking the movie Black Beauty with a white horse. I mean the color of the mf is literally in the title.

It's been a while since I saw it, but that seems like something that didn't happen to me.

My memory is very fuzzy too, but I don't ever remember the prince being a stalker. If there was, maybe one scene but taken out of context? Either way, I wouldn't put my faith in the journalism at The Wrap.

Nobody remembers the prince from the movie as the Dwarves are far more memorable but overall she is right.

My recollection is that they meet once while she's at the castle, then once again at the dwarves cabin where they basically agree to have a date and when he arrives she's dead and it makes him sad.

Maybe it is a little suspect. Like, maybe somebody at Disney had a "be less white" moment and worried if it was problematic to have a character named after their whiteness. Or maybe they simply wanted inclusive casting and didn't think people would get that bent out of shape over Snow White being a Latina.

There's no winning with the ridiculousness of social media. Someone, somewhere is going to be vehemently angry over the dumbest thing.

Yeah that one they're damned if they do damned if they don't

They're trying to be progressive by not typecasting little people exclusively as magical dwarves which I get. It's almost saying they can only be in movies if their characters defining trait is their size as has been the case forever. So Disney is attempting to be open minded I guess.

But in the process the real world consequences are 7 little people actors miss out on 7 jobs

No course correcting. Just make the movie you wanna make. Black Little Mermaid? Don't care. Keep making the movie. People complaining about little people cast as the 7 dwarves? Don't care keep making the movie

As an almost 30 year old man I don't think I could ever care any which way about this movie.

The movie's probably gonna be trash, but "conservative political commentator fearmongers about wokeness" has been a thing since at least Beauty and the Beast. They're already mad about a supposedly Hispanic Snow White, this is just adding more fuel to the fire.

These live action remakes have largely been pointless cash grabs, but the actors races have nothing to do with their quality. The sad thing is that we keep getting remakes because it keeps making money, not that they swapped some races.

I think the strategy of promoting the live-action movies by trashing the animated ones is disrespectful. Disney princesses used to be celebrated. Now they're "problematic." No, what's problematic is modern Disney thinking every girl should be an abrasive "girlboss" to be a "strong woman."

I don't even think there was anything magical about them. There's the fantasy dwarves/mining connection, but for all intents and purposes, they were just 7 dudes trying to make a living.

It goes all the way back to at least the 90s for movies like Thelma and Louise. It was just labelled as political correctness and toxic feminism back then. Probably goes back even further.

One difference back then was that a lot of movies were still catered to them. Which is why the 90s are filled with movies about women working in the office who are sexy and dangerous lol

Hollywood movies comes in two ways, cash grab or oscar bait. And they're not exclusive to each others.

I think this movie was made this way specifically so conservative dumbasses could give Disney free advertisement. Thanks to the changing of the Dwarves, it's already different enough for it to be its own thing.

So people are mad that Snow White may be going away from a stalking success story

So it's Snow White and the seven dwarves, only Snow White isn't white, the dwarves aren't dwarves, and the basic premise of the story has also been changed.
