It seems simple enough. Cambells buys Rao's, uses their power and influence to take that same Rao's and put it in every home like Ragu, but what really is going to happen is the recipe is going to get cheaper and shittier.

That's what I am afraid of. They'll start using cheaper ingredients and raise the price on consumers to recoup what they spent to buy it.

The people that took over Hostess did the same thing and those cupcakes are not the ones I remember as a kid.

Are you serious? Rao's is a very popular Italian restaurant in East Harlem NY and they stay so booked that you have to make reservations weeks sometimes months ahead of time to get a table and their pasta sauce is really really good. They have been in business since 1896.

It's a family owned business and the last owner, the late Frank Pellegrino Sr was also an actor. He played on "The Soprano's" and "Law and Order."

His son runs it now.

It's still canned sauce produced on a commercial scale.

Aldi has some really great pasta sauces under their Specially Selected brand. They're a bit more expensive than their other brands (Reggano, Priano, and Simply Nature), but still way cheaper than Rao's.

And according to these guys, the Specially Selected Premium Marinara basically IS Rao's, except it's $2.89 a jar:

Rao is like 10 dollars a jar here and *to me* 3 dollar prego doesn't taste that much worse. I stopped buying Rao a long time ago because it wasn't worth it. If I want better tomato sauce, I'll make it.

I usually just buy their onion soup, because it makes for great dip when you mix it with sour cream.

For funsies, you can even go with the Onion and Mushroom variety and get a slightly zestier dip.
