age limits - I'd personally like to see a system that involves younger people to have political office. I think we need an even distribution of age ranges. I don't know what that would exactly look like an I suppose it's constitutionally unlikely/impossible at the moment.

For the upper age limit, I guess the life expectancy age makes sense to my stupid brain. So... something like "if you're X years of age, you can't run for office unless you are the incumbent. if you are the incumbent, it's your final term."

If this is true I retract my statement (although if a voting restriction gets imposed on the voters themselves, I'd be fine with that)
Senate Dems are older but only by 2.5 years and both are just really old.

Average Age of the Senate as a whole: 64.23 (Median: 65.5, Mode: 72 and 68, both at 6 Senators)
Dems - Average: 65.47 (Median: 66, Mode: 76 at 4)
GOP - Average: 62.93 (Median: 65, Mode: 68 at 5)

Dems have the oldest (Feinstein) and youngest (Ossoff).
18 of the oldest 22 are Dems.
6 of the youngest 10 are GOP.
Only 8 Senators are under 50 (6 GOP, 2 Dems - one of which is Sinema)

Pretty sure the median age of the Senate (and House) are the oldest on record.

Last time we had this discussion, someone posted an article that said the average age of Congress has increased at a slower rate than the average age of the total population.

I don't think that's a useful number, though, because the idea that the ruling population is almost double the age of the average citizen is unbelievably stupid.

Not that I necessarily WANT a Congress of late 20-somethings, but I think it says a lot that generally speaking, the only people who can successfully run and maintain office are in their late 40's, and then if the seat isn't contested, they stay there forever. Wack.

I mean, what is the west supposed to do? Invade and forcibly change their culture? That idea always turns out great. This isn't a Ukraine situation where the aggressors are external, easily identifiable, and can be defeated with funding and weapons.

Recognizing that injustices happen overseas isn't meaningless, but at a certain point it just becomes mentally torturing yourself. Especially when there's plenty of problems at home that are still unresolved.

I did not think about voters who will stick with the Republican candidate just out of party loyalty. Especially given that their beloved cult leader getting arrested just galvanizes them further. At this point though I don't see how next year's election will turn out any differently from 2020.

Guess Gina Carano was onto something when she outed the Republican Party as a cult.

The actual answer varies from country to country. It could be diplomacy and incentives to change, it could be sanctions. What is clear is that the west needs to do something as there has been a truly disheartening inwards turn from the west since the war on terror failed spectacularly (and might I add, increased global terrorism). Military intervention was wrong and never should have happened but what has happened since has just been total disengagement which in turn has led to the series of coups across the Sahel everybody would rather just ignore. So I suppose what I would like to see is definitely not a return to invade places we dont like but more international engagement than current which is quasi-isolationism effectively.

This is also a pan-western thing not down to any one country also. France was a holdout (their opposition to the Iraq war probably helped) but even they have been disengaging internationally lately. I think this is just the way that western governments have responded to 2014-2016 (boy I wonder what happened in 2014 to kick that off hint hint Russia hint hint) and we are now seeing the impacts of it as repressive hard-right or far-right governments like Russia are increasing their global influence while democracies reduce theirs. The old ways were not fit for purpose but neither are the new ways.

Marsha Blackburn is repeatedly embarrassing while Gloria Johnson is the real deal. Please please please.....

https://apnews.com/article/tennessee-senate-election-gloria-johnson-2024-0af4029fcd1e725c5340928aaf072aa1

In a direct comparison, I fear she won't do as well as Phil Bredeson in 2018 as a former governor that once won every county but lost to Blackburn by about eleven points. Johnson has less statewide exposure or known statewide support in that measure, so there's room for doubt. Also though, people are much more pissed about in-state politics than usual too thanks to this year. The Covenant school shooting, the expulsions of Justin Jones and Justin Pearson alongside being one vote shy of expelling Gloria -- the "Tennessee Three" -- and the attempts of suppressing the LGBTQ community via outlawing public drag performers shortly before Pride Month "to protect the kids" despite Governor Bill Lee having dressed in drag during high school...those have all been riling people up for change.

This will be a worthy test to see if there actually is a change happening in Tennessee politics or not. Looking forward to the polling and crossing fingers along the way.

Just to clear something up, the way I take it the misconception surrounding how Democrats supposedly rigged the last election is because of the last-minute blue wave...which has only never happened in that way before because Trump discouraged voting by mail and in prior elections most such votes went to the Republican candidate? This situation is even worse than I thought.

https://www.reuters.com/legal/georgia-grand-jury-report-trump-election-interference-be-released-friday-2023-09-08/

The Fulton County Special Grand Jury report was just unsealed and it recommended indicting both Georgia Senators of the time (Loeffler and Perdue) as well as Lindsey Graham. (And other Trump advisors and lawyers such as Michael Flynn)

For a bit of background, the special grand jury didn't have the power to bring charges itself but with its subpoena power to obtain testimony for witnesses and the evidence it gathered was used by the DA to seek the indictment against Trump and the 18 other co-conspirators. The report had been kept under seal by the DA's request while she decided what charges to bring and against whom but now that that's been done a judge ruled there was no longer any reason to keep it under seal.

So looks like the GA indictment could have been even bigger than it turned out to be. I wonder why the DA didn't move forward with charging at least some of those with the others. I guess with the Senators maybe they thought it'd draw even more heat, even though Graham is the only one still in office, but Flynn and the others? Unless they flipped.

  1. Because they want to devalue the weight of impeachments by launching frivolous ones so that Trump's impeachments look less bad (i.e. "oh i guess impeachments are just something that happen now")
  2. Because their base demands it because they think Biden is some criminal mastermind (that also isn't aware of his surroundings)
  3. Yeah, just plain retaliation ("You did it to us so now we're going to do it to you!") regardless of the reality of the situation.
  4. It's possible this is part of the deals McCarthy made to attain the Speakership in the first place and he has to give the more extreme parts of his caucus what they want or they'll refuse to support him as Speaker and force a leadership change. I... kinda.... am skeptical of this, but not impossible.
FWIW, this is just an impeachment inquiry AFAIK which is basically the earlier stage and not an actual impeachment vote. I have my doubts the House could actually pass an impeachment vote if it gets to that stage. Two House GOP members have already stated they oppose it. I believe McCarthy can only afford to lose 4 of his own votes before it would fail a full vote of the House.

For some stupid reason I do check on those anti-progressive channels from time to time, although a part of it is that I'm more actively following channels that specifically criticize anti-progressives like TurfNation. Even on unrelated channels though there are people in the comments who still complain about wokeness as if it's the main reason for movies flopping (you'd think Barbie disproves this bigtime, but some come up with excuses regardless), or that Indiana Jones 5 is such a big bomb specifically because people are tired of "anti-male" agendas coming out of Lucasfilm as if that was specifically THE big problem with the sequel trilogy or something which is one of the most laughable notions I've ever heard and anyone who actually thinks that is effectively a misogynist.

Heck, forget about The Last Jedi. The way some of these people talk makes it clear they never got over the Ghostbusters reboot!

Fine, before that. Tbh half the deal is I'm genuinely worried people like the Drinker are giving men as a whole something of a bad name, although I suppose they're far from the worst offenders. But Drinker has had multiple instances of complaining about "beautiful" women being unhappy about getting hit on or pursued after rejecting advances repeatedly in reviews of media like Peacemaker and She-Hulk, and then he mocked the idea of giving Echo her own show because "she's unable to communicate in any meaningful way", which is both ableist and flat-out wrong since Hawkeye devotes a considerable amount of time to show how she communicates. I'm personally just worried that this is the way lots of people (e.g. many Trump voters) genuinely think nowadays, where they're not only ignorant but proud of it. Especially given what "woke" means.

Governments across the world are getting hammered because of global economic conditions, regardless of their political leaning. A Biden loss would just fit that narrative. With that said, the advantage Biden does have is that he will be running against Trump. Look at Spain - Sanchez was able to hang on because he rightly mobilised concern that the centre-right main opposition was going to bring the far-right (who actually lost support) into government. Overall I think a moderate Republican would probably paste Biden but moderate Republicans arent on the menu. Fear of Trump will hopefully get voters out as well it should!

Though to be clear, the other guys a fascist is not the campaign you ever want to have to run. Not a good situation.
