7R by a country mile.

Far more variety in what you can do, the multiple team members differentiated by their own particular set of skills, and the game still being "action-oriented" without that being so overly an emphasis like XVI's was.

I also like the ATB system more than the skill cooldown system but that might just be me.

I got frustrated with 7R combat a lot, though all in all I loved it. Party AI was shit and having to control them for certain fights got annoying. What stands out to me is the awful fight right near the end where you fight that giant machine with Barret/Tifa/Aerith. Honestly I just don't like the hybrid system very much, I'd prefer a commitment in either direction.

16 is a character action game which is just kind of better to me by default, honestly, so I still have to go with that. I would say 7R's combat was more impressive for what it was going for than 16 was as a character action game, though.

7R by a lot, but 16 isn't bad.

FF7Rs combat is garbage. It suffers from overdesign. Constant flood of information that creates a poor sense of feedback on what is and isn't effective, too many systems and cooldowns and character mechanics to manage in real time, and even then all the battles ultimately feel pretty samey for how much mental energy I need to expend. I'm not actually strategizing. I feel like a nurse trying to monitor a bunch of vital signs for a patient and responding to them constantly dropping.

FF16 at least allows for creativity on the players end. Go on reddit or youtube and watch some of the shit power gamers come up with.

16 by a very wide margin.

7R isn't bad but I enjoyed it significantly less.

7R and it isnt close. 16s combat is horribly dull.

yeah I have to echo the 7Remake praise. XVI could be good but it really needs variety/difference in the abilities. my main changes would be to 1) add lag to item usage, 2) add loadouts, 3) add immunities and weaknesses to particular enemies.

Yeah I don't understand the praise for FF16 combat. They half assed a character action game and didn't design any AI for any of the fodder enemies.

16 is fun enough but could use some improvements. I wouldn't mind if they tried it again after some feedback

7R is fantastic though and 16 would have been even better if it just used 7R's combat

Just about everyone so far has said "Blank and it's not even close" in one way or the other, so I think it's safe to say they're just 2 different target audiences lol.

Sure, they're different styles.

It's still interesting to gauge what people prefer

Indeed!

It's pretty fascinating that it's completely neck and neck (as of right now). I wonder if there will ever be a way to make everyone happy at once?

Well count me as someone who loves both. The combat system was the only thing that got me through XVI, I skipped a good portion of the cutscenes. I also loved the Eikon battles.

However I voted for 7R. I think it's combat is a little better, I prefer switching between teammates and it actually requires strategy in order to maximize damage during an enemy stagger. Which is more rewarding. XVI can be kinda mindless depending on your loadout.

XVI is fun but it's also super easy and I basically end up doing the same things in every fight, whether it's a mob of mooks or a hunt.

VIIR actually involves strategy and makes every character viable in their own ways.

Oh yeah the one thing I did prefer in FF7R was being able to play as multiple characters.

7R Hard Mode combat > 16 combat > 7R default combat

I guess the disappointment is 16's combat didn't change or evolve when you went to its harder mode while 7R's did

They're both good, but I agree that 7R is an impressive design for an ARPG and XVI is not particularly amazing for a character action game. It's cool getting all these genre tools to play with but then most of them don't serve any practical purpose. DMCV or Hi-Fi Rush it ain't, but if you have to have a combat system for your story-driven RPG, it's fun at least.

FFXVI by a lot

I had a lot of problems with FF7R, like losing your limit break because you started it before a cutscene, losing MP when you get hit out of a spell before even casting it, Aero whiffing 99% of the time, losing stagger on bosses to cutscenes, etc. Like at least when there's a battle cutscene in XVI they have the courtesy to let you take advantage of your hard work staggering the enemy first, and sometimes even give you another one after!

I have some issues with XVI as well, but not as annoying as those. I also just think it's a lot more fun with the combos you can pull off

Also cooldowns > ATB imo

Haven't played 16 and only got to try 7R at a friend's briefly, but in the ~90 minutes I played it, I found 7R nothing but frustrating. Maybe it gets a lot better once you understand the nuances, but I simply hated it to the point that I wasn't willing to play any further.

16 has the better feeling combat options, but 7R is the vastly superior implementation.

But I finally played 7R after 16 and boy oh boy did that feel weird for a while.
