Random rants/takes about things that are being spread unchallenged, mostly politics channels that dip into tech because they're trying to be a jack of all trades.

"Games are taking up too much hard drive space because devs have no financial incentive to keep file sizes small, and bloat your hard drive." This is completely unfounded. The amount of effort it takes to compress game files is very small. The reason people are saying this is because 200 GB is bigger than 60 GB, no more thought is being put into this than that. Games are bigger because the textures and models are higher resolution. Modders are not releasing patches that magically make the game files smaller. Do you want your games to look the same way forever?

"AI is a gimmick/fad pushed by tech bros." This is a very uneducated take. Tell that to the language models that are upheaving customer service, the models that are helping physics researchers predict the inner workings of the most fundamental particles, the models that are making graphics and light transport simulations run 300 times faster, the models that are enabling robots to navigate surroundings and complete tasks. AI is just getting started. I'm not even scratching the surface here. I cannot possibly imagine that AI is going to become less prevalent in the future.

"AI is evil/detrimental to society/a capitalist nightmare." Technology is not good or evil. It will help in some places and hurt in others. On average, it will make the world a better place. If the experts can't tell you what's going to happen in the future, you can't either.

"AI is not true AI, and the name is a misnomer. It's not really thinking." AI literally simulates neurons almost the exact same way they work in your head. Language models work using the same logic your brain does. In that regard, you can view a language model as a human with brain damage, where the part of the brain that contemplates what was just said, anticipates what will be said in the future, any other of the modular brain functions required to create a general intelligence are not present.

Mostly Adam Ruins Everything. Very smart and educated guy. Sociologists hate engineers because it gives them little dick syndrome and they were snubbed by them in college. They can't control themselves and just "not have a take" on it, or, dare I even suggest, consult a real engineer on your takes.

I mean, no, the current AI trend is all bullshit, it's just clever marketing, it's just that now it's out there for public use instead of just private institutions and university research.

Youtube rhetoric I hate is stuff like CGP Grey's "how to fix traffic" video where his solution to traffic is to make cars even more dangerous than they already are, instead of the obvious which is put funding into public transit so that fewer cars are on the road.

I am basically hesitant when listening to any sponsored content these days. Almost every big channel has 90% of their content sponsored and it's likely also being created to get the sponsorship payout.

Many people are tech illiterate so I can't blame them from being exploited by the large amount of outright wrong / misleading tech videos out there.

Company I work at sells several products with AI components to them. They are not the same kind of AI as an LLM. They are also not the kind of AI you see in a film like The Terminator.

"AI is a gimmick/fad pushed by tech bros."

It totally is though. It's the NFTs of 2023.

Something I said back in 2021.
I'm not going to judge you for learning about LLMs in 2023, but they are not a new concept, they aren't a fad, and have nothing to do with whatever the hell a "tech bro" is. There are real world uses for this technology, but they're likely not for you. For example deepl is a translation service that has existed for a few years now that is built on AI. Google bard also recently integrated mulit-language support into its model.

yep LLM is kind of like crypto, it has uses but it is also a grift, and that is because most people don't understand how it works. so to them it is just "a robot that knows everything" and now there are a million "AI startup" grifts that will automatically get VC funding and flop massively

That was the worst video CGP Grey ever made. Veritasium made a video on "why Elon Musk can multi-task better than you", Google it.

AI's not marketing though. Are there a lot of startup companies from wannabe CEOs who think a single API call to chat-gpt is a viable business model? Yes.

The fact that you had to dive that deep to defend it only confirms even more that it's just the yearly grift to me. LLMs are already starting to fade as it is, not to mention the unbelievable problems they have with getting basic facts right, data exfiltration, and cheating in academics.

ChatGPT use is on the decline now due to people realizing how dumb and useless its answers are:

You're not listening. Chat-gpt is an LLM. LLM is not chat-gpt.

You people might get bored of using a tech demo for serious applications, but that doesn't mean LLMs are going anywhere.

Still a piece of the puzzle. The more drastic size oddities involve the devs pulling the wool over your eyes by making "in-game" cinematics these large uncompressed video files and whatnot, but it's ultimately a toolkit of tricks at their disposal.
