These Russian and Belarusian athletes are openly against the war despite their countries treatment of political activists so what is Svitolina achieving here accept the promotion of hatred and discrimination. Keep in mind she always wants them banned from participating in the first place too. Is she even aware of how the Belarusian people feel about Lukashenko and the war? Does she remember the protests? Leave politics out of sports or don't negatively involve other players because Sabalenka and Azarenka deserve respect and not this treatment from other players and the crowd.

It's a message of disapproval, not unity. As others mentioned, sports are used as propaganda to show how Russia's influence on the world stage. She demonstrated that their influence is viewed negatively.

Russian/Belarusian players were banned last year, in part for this very reason (their own protection). Wimbledon faced fines and penalties for doing so, which also affected all players in terms of points/rankings, so they caved this time. No one's saying that Russian/Belarusian players aren't in a difficult spot too

If you're a top player in any world sports, you're representing your country unless you specifically deny your support and go independent, which rarely happens due to the benefit of representing a country, as well as some pride elements.

The statement of players having nothing to do with it is just being clueless. I dunno where they're from but it's a bit weird that Americans, from what I've seen as having been citizens of 2 countries with varying status, have very little pride element and don't understand the concept of fighting for a country in non-violent (aka non-gun) environments.
