Mastodon is an open source, decentralized social network. Anyone can fire up their own server and create an instance, and any account on any instance can follow other accounts on other instances. It's kind of like how email works, you create an account on Gmail, and you can communicate with Hotmail or Yahoo or AOL or John Doe's private mail server.

Threads is basically Facebook's attempt to take over Mastodon. They're using the same protocols as the rest of Mastodon. If it were a normal instance, it would be allowed to federate with the rest of the network. But there's been a big push to block Threads and prevent federation.

This is sort of indicative of what I mentioned in the other topic on this subject.

There are tons of Twitter alternatives out there... but while people who are terminally online may know about most of them and have opinions of which one is better and why, the average person living in the real world (which are still making up the vast majority of users for social media sites, even if their reading/posting habits are more casual) has never heard of any of them. So there's never going to be a concerted push to switch platforms no matter how terrible Twitter might become or how much people come to hate it. At least not until one of the alternatives manages to establish itself as a clear alternative that is both popular and massive.

Most people on social media in general are followers who go where the trends lead them, they're not trailblazers who are going to actively go looking for new services. So they're not going to jump ship unless a new platform presents itself as both more useful, more popular, of significant size, and "cool". Which really isn't happening right now, no matter how much people want to complain about Twitter.

This is one of the reasons why new trending social media sites tend to be significantly different from what already exists, creating a new niche to fill. And why, if anything, the "new Twitter" these days is probably something more like TikTok (for good or ill). Or even something like Instagram or Snapchat.

No. But Ill be there in a heartbeat if they adopt reverse chronological order. I hate not being able to see everything, in order, from the people I follow on Facebook and Instagram. Screw your algorithm, just show me what my friends are up to and what the latest news is.

I'm guessing the 100 million accounts isn't 100 million people?

Otherwise Gamefaqs would have a barely a higher percentage of people on it than the world overall...

I have legacy facebook and twitter accounts. I made them 500 years ago and browse on them once in a while, but i dont post anything. but i couldn't imagine creating a new social media account in 2023. The last one I did was Instagram like 3 years ago, but I actively use that as a platform to post photographs I take.

Same reason most people don't use Linux. Mastodon focuses on ideological values over usability that precludes it from ever becoming a viable option for mass adoption.

I'd argue the bigger issue was more that there wasn't a viable alternative to migrate to at the point that the initial Twitter outrage peaked last year. Mastodon gained an initial upsurge in usage, but it was never going to be and never will be a viable replacement to Twitter. And none of the other potentially legitimate alternatives were mature enough at that point to be able to capitalize on Musk's idiocy.

That being said, as long as Musk is around it's not a matter of if Twitter will fail but when. Musk is a terrible leader and the only reason that his other companies succeeded is due to them having a team that limited Musk's ability to directly manage the company...something Twitter doesn't have. It may not currently be obvious to the average user, but Musk is systematically destroying everything that made Twitter valued in the first place in the quest of short gain profit.

The mismanagement of MySpace/Digg/LiveJournal/Photobucket/Tumblr led to their failure, and Twitter's following the same path. Long term Reddit might be as well.

Deleted it the other day. It's incredible how much Threads fucking suuuuuuuuuuuuucks. I could handle how pointless it is if it also at least had the basic corporate crossover I use Twitter (Nintendo announcements, Capcom stuff, etc) but it hasn't even reached that level of momentum yet. I can only handle so many influencers I don't follow desperately struggling for attention in my uncurated feed of garbage.

I waited through every other stupid website trend. I'll wait out this one too.
