The time between RS and DP was about 4 years, which is longer than the average turnaround time for Pokemon, but they're perhaps the most notorious (outside of recent entries) games in the series for being undercooked. The hell happened?

Probably couldn't get accustomed to the DS architecture in time. Compare DP to the later DS entries, and you'll see a vast improvement with each game.

They spent the whole dev cycle getting those 3d models of Dialga and Palkia to load on the start screen without crashing, not to mention animating that Magikarp coin flip app

I'd guess the jump to the DS was harder than they expected. I miss that era of pokemon so much tho. They cramped so much love into the DS entries.

There was nothing undercooked about them other than forgetting to actually put fire pokemon in the game.

This. D/P had flaws but were still great games. Then Platinum came around and fixed almost all of those flaws

Pokemon didn't REALLY start getting good until Platinum. Gen 1 had a good region but the gameplay was an awful mess. Gen 2 had the same problem, but its problem wasn't glitches; it was the ridiculously underleveled gym leaders and E4. Then Gen 3 was just boring, with too much water and backtracking. I never played DP but I heard the gameplay in it was very slow. With Platinum, it seems they finally started getting everything right.

First DS Game, also first to have online battles and trades and GTS. Also had that local multiplayer aspect with digging underground and such to get spiritomb that everybody hated. yall expect too much from developers tbh.

Diamond and Pearl are so fucking ass lmao. One of the worst regions, and Mt. Coronet was really fucking cool of an idea. But people forget that in actual practice, it was a really boring cave section with only 1 part of the top part of Coronet even realistically relevant and doesn't even resemble a mountain. Otherwise nobody fucking remembers majority of the cities, and none of its connecting components are memorable in the slightest. Like who remembers the... I dunno 4th gym of Sinnoh, really?

It had very few good non-derivative original Pokemon too. Like Infernape was kinda lame when it shares the same typing as Blaziken. But when it comes to 4th gen, the only ones people remember are stuff that evolves from other games

Also the phys/spec split was by far the most valuable part of 4th gen, but the battles kinda sucked. They were slow in-game, and the meta was ruined by now buffed previous gen Pokemon, not for anything 4th gen did. Honestly the only fun Pokemon to use were previous gen ones so my team wasn't that different from like 3rd gen.

There are several bad histories being told here. Folks forget how 2006 was essentially the Stone Age and that RS had just established the serial formula. If Emerald was the first truly 'complete' entry in the series, DP followed its act by providing a lengthy, quasi-open map with substantial postgame content expanded by Platinum. The remakes are rough around the edges because certain design tenets are less palatable today, but they were the best entries in the series at the time of release with vibrant competitive and trading scenes thanks to online capabilities. Is there a particular aspect of the games that you had in mind? This series' game design is fairly easy to track as evolutionary.

And they did it again in Gen V. And Incineroar was obviously designed as a fighter but had dark slapped on him out of shame or something.

I liked DP, but Platinum showed how flawed DP were. The overall speed of DP was bad and the saving time issue was bad. A few smaller issues like the lack of fire pokemon were present but not damaging. Platinum was just the game that DP should have been, but ultimately DP were a necessary step for the rest of the DS games.

Lucario, Garchomp, Shaymin, Darkrai, and the starters are all some of the most popular pokemon in the franchise, especially Piplup.

Usually the first games for the new console are always them getting used to the new hardware and the 2nd game for the new consoles are fully realized. Only exception is GBA because it only had 1 but the pattern rings true for GBC, DS, 3DS and Switch.

Gold/Silver, Black/White, Sun/Moon and Scarlet/Violet are huge leaps from the previous entries on the same consoles.

Incineroar is based off of heel (villain) pro wrestlers who often cheat and use dirty tactics to win matches, and the Dark type is literally called the Evil type in Japan. It makes perfect sense for it to be Fire/Dark given that inspiration for its design.

Pretty much. D/P laid the DS Pokemon framework, then Platinum and HG/SS expanded on it and became top-tier Pokemon games as a result.

I think it mostly had to be preparing for online, and really wireless in general. That had a little practice for wireless with FrLg, but it was a huge step up from that to do with native hardware.

The overall speed of the games and the extremely scuffed accessibility of some Pokemon (not just Fire-types) are what immediately come to mind, but the gyms also felt extremely undercooked.

Were they undercooked? They were still fine to me. It's just every subsequent Pokemon game on the same platform outshone it.

You can tell in gen 4 that there were growing pains with regard to the new hardware (mainly visible in the lower FPS, the slower HP bars, and the agonizing save times), but the games felt fine aside from that. Gen 5 is where you can tell they got over those pains.

I don't have a strong opinion on the technical aspects of it, but aesthetically D/P felt like a noticeable downgrade from R/S, particularly in world design / biome diversity and soundtrack. And the underground caves were a lot less fun than R/S's home base setup. I also though R/S's 'evil team' dichotomy (in which one Team was the bad guys and the other was the tentative good guys based on the version you had) was fairly clever for a Pokemon game.

D/P certainly wasn't bad in this regard (before anyone accuses me of thinking, for instance, that D/P's standout music tracks aren't deserving of praise), but R/S got me hooked back into the franchise largely based on the above qualities, and D/P in general left me with a feeling of 'oh...that's it?' when playing through it.
