I never added a 2fa app.

I guess that's that. GG well played Elon.

Every site that actually carries some weight should have TOTP based 2FA.
GameFAQs is an example of a site that shouldn't.

They should absolutely mandate that you use it.

They shouldn't softlock your account asking for a 2fa that you never added. My account is just gone now.

No social media site should ever carry enough weight to require it in the first place.

That's not what our society thinks sadly.
The moment people bring their real life identities online the internet is suddenly a serious place.

My opinion: while 2FA is an indispensable security measure, it should not be forced on people. Nothing should.

I use it anyway.

That's why I said should.

And also why I have such a low opinion of modern online culture in general.

I hate 2FA for anything below like online bank account or government websites level of security importance.

And I'm convinced a lot of these sites push it to get your phone number and other info from you under the guise of "security" (only to lack the most basic encryption security themselves and you find out a year later they've been hacked and all your unprotected data has been stolen.... and no, I will NEVER forgive Linked In).

2FA is horseshit for anything outside of super sensitive information, such as bank accounts.

TOTP (e.g. Google Authenticator) does not require a phone and has nothing to do with phones AND is stronger than an SMS authenticator. SMS authentication is the old way of doing it and anyone who is still using it is.
  • Not aware of current cybersecurity trends
  • Is trying to collect your data.
Furthermore, TOTPs require no internet connection to function and the generation of them are an open standard. They are incredibly safe but vulnerable to MitM attacks (like everything else).

I like extra protection for my game accounts. Like the below for my Steam account, I'll protect it as much as possible. So I use the app and frankly stupid passwords (40+ characters when the site doesn't limit me to 16 or whatever).

Yeah, but you've probably sank more money into Steam than most people keep in their bank, so you're a bit of an edge case.
