Businesses could just choose to not increase their prices. It's a choice they make. It's not governed by some sort of natural law like gravity, which is how people talk about it.

It's clear you don't have an understanding of basic economic theory nor the historical context. This doesn't work under a capitalist society which is the framework we are currently working with.

As someone else pointed out, the French Revolution was an example of why it doesn't work that way.

You would have to completely rework the entire government and economy. Now, maybe you're an extremist who says, "Good! Let's rework the government and economy", but that's not even on the table when it comes to the current decision over loan forgiveness. The court wouldn't have the authority to do anything even touching on that. They have to work with the framework that exists.

Under our current framework, that's why loan forgiveness is bad.

Under our current framework, we routinely give away free money to certain sections of the population and will continue to do so.

Look at that, you didn't actually move on like you claimed you would in that fake "moving on" bravado. Lol

No one said a person making mistakes in the past means alls forgiven. However it does actually matter when pushing purity bs that this same person is the same person they were those years ago because of a foolish mistake they made. You are speaking of something nearly 3 decades ago that he isn't pushing today.

So your argument claiming he's the same is purity bs.

I don't think you understand much about how the world works other than "truisms" you were taught in high school.

Again, people could literally just decide not to be dicks, that's always an option. Nobody is "restricted" by capitalism to be a dick.

What's strange to me is that so many people that are staunchly against loan forgiveness often claim to support making university free. But like, where do they think the money is coming from? In that circumstance the government is fully subsudizing universities, and it's literally the same thing at a larger scale.

Honestly, I'd be fine if they changed it so people could discharge student loan debt if they file bankruptcy like any other loan. Part of the problem is you can't, so even if your situation goes completely sideways, you still have this 1 loan weighing you down.

I dont doubt that a lot of these types of stories are true. But if youve been paying loans for 11 years and have a larger balance than when you started, you gotta stop banging your head against the wall and come up with a new solution. The method I used when I graduated with my MBA was to immediately refinance with a private company that cut the interest rate from 7% to 3.25%. That allowed me to spend more on principal and saved me tens of thousands in interest.

On the topic of interest Thomas Edison once said "It is a terrible situation when the Government, to insure the National Wealth, must go in debt and submit to ruinous interest charges, at the hands of men, who control the fictitious value of gold. Interest is the invention of Satan."

This however meant he was dogged with allegations of anti-Semitism until he died and after though.

Why just higher education? You do realize that public school education also costs a lot of money too, right?

We're in a country where being highly educated is a necessity for social mobility, to the extent to which it exists at all. We're in a country where misinformation campaigns have made sifting and evaluating information a necessary skill to participate in our democracy. And to the extent to which the populus doesn't have that skill, the more pliable they are to bad actors, foriegn or otherwise.

Why are you deciding to draw the line at university?

It doesn't even have to be executive order, he has laws giving him explicit authority.

But even if that weren't the case, this would ABSOLUTELY be a good target. Not only is it perfectly reasonable and addressing a major flaw in modern US society, but it's literally one of his primary campaign goals, he should be taking every effort he can to fulfill that.

But he won't because he doesn't actually care about the people.

THE ORIGIN OF STUDENT DEBT: REAGAN ADVISER WARNED FREE COLLEGE WOULD CREATE A DANGEROUS EDUCATED PROLETARIAT
In 1970, Roger Freeman, who also worked for Nixon, revealed the rights motivation for coming decades of attacks on higher education.
Freemans remarks were reported the next day in the San Francisco Chronicle under the headline Professor Sees Peril in Education. According to the Chronicle article, Freeman said, We are in danger of producing an educated proletariat. Thats dynamite! We have to be selective on who we allow [to go to college].

If not, Freeman continued, we will have a large number of highly trained and unemployed people. Freeman also said taking a highly idiosyncratic perspective on the cause of fascism thats what happened in Germany. I saw it happen.
