I wasn't quite that old, but I got caught up on both of those as well when I read fantasy novels written by a British author. I always assumed "gaol" was pronounced more like "gay-oll".

I think it took me longer to realize that "quay" is actually pronounced "key".

I am pretty sure that one is also widespread outside of English. Calling a designated crossing like that a "zebra"-"something" in many other languages.

In addition to Zebra crossings, which are just a crosswalk with no controls except maybe a flashing amber light, there are other types of crossings.

Pelican crossings have traffic lights to control traffic. The pedestrian presses a button which switches the traffic lights to red.

Puffin crossings are similar but the pedestrian lights are on the same side of the street, instead of the opposite side as with a Pelican crossing. They also have sensors that can detect whether the pedestrian is still crossing and can hold the light longer, or if the person has wandered off so the crossing request can be cancelled.

Toucan crossings are similar to Pelican or Puffin crossings, but have an additional signal for bicyclists and are usually wider.

Pegasus crossings are designed for horse riders. They have additional buttons mounted higher up so riders do not have to dismount. They are also usually wider and there may be additional barriers or fences nearby for the protection of the animals. They are generally equipped with crossing sensors to hold the signal when necessary.

Based on your assertion that "zoo" is pronounced "zed-oo" in Britland, I'd say your relationship with the truth is semi-detached at best.

British money used to be crazy complicated.

1 pound = 20 shillings
1 shilling = 12 pence
1 penny = 4 farthings

1 pound = 240 pence
1 pound = 960 farthings
1 shilling = 48 farthings

1 guinea = 21 shillings (1 pound plus 1 shilling)
1 half-sovereign = 10 shillings (1/2 pound)
1 crown = 5 shillings (1/4 pound)
1 half-crown = 2 shillings, 6 pence (1/8 pound)
1 florin = 2 shillings (1/10 pound)

Thank God we went decimal. For a time, prices were shown in old money and new money and some of the old coins were still legal tender for a while alongside the new coins, so shopkeepers must have had a brainspazz trying to give customers the correct change.
