The famous shipwreck sits 3,800m (12,500ft) down at the bottom of the Atlantic. It is about 600km (370 miles) off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

Jesus imagine being stuck on that at 12,500ft down. I hope things turn out right. Still waiting on exact details but brings me back to the Kursk disaster 20 years back.

Ok that's how it could be no one on board, but as to the how they don't know... isn't there someone in charge of tracking if anyone got on the ship or not?

The company operating the submersible which has gone missing says it is exploring and mobilising all options to bring the crew back safely.

Our entire focus is on the crewmembers in the submersible and their families, says OceanGate in a statement.

It says it has received extensive assistance from several government agencies and deep sea companies in its efforts to re-establish contact with the submersible.

Coast Guard says they doing everything they can.

Apparently light cant get further than 1km so they could be one the ocean floor in pitch black. Possibly upside down.

From what I heard, there are three possible fates:

(1. The sub is bobbing on the ocean surface somewhere. There are emergency ballasts that will send the sub to the surface. However, the sub can only be opened from the outside and only has 96 hours of oxygen. The best case scenario is that it's found before running out of air.

(2. The sub is resting on the ocean floor. There would be no way to recover the vessel before the air runs out because no other vehicle in the near vicinity can go that deep.

(3. The sub imploded. A very quick, albeit stressful death. They'd be dead before hearing the implosion.

Hopefully, the first possibility occurred and they recover the sub before air runs out.

I heard that the sub had been discovered lodged in the wreckage of the ship, but the source for that claim was the Daily Mail, so I don't believe it.

I read that the trip costs around $250K per person, so.... sounds about right.

Only three of the passengers were tourists. There are two staff as well. The pilot and historian.

The United States could provide lunch to over a 1000 students every day of the year for the amount spent on those seats. Instead, the United States are going pay a shitton more to perform an entirely unnecessary search and rescue mission

I don't care if these people want to spend their money on this shit.

I do care when the US government has to spend money saving them when any rational adult would have seen an experimental sub controlled by a playstation remote exploring the titanic wreckage was not a solid idea. Especially when shit like school lunches are getting cut

Imagine being this big of a simp for the irresponsible actions of rich people. The ocean, especially the deep ocean doesn't fuck around. Not only is this S&R very expensive, it's risky to the rescuers involved.

Like I said I don't care if they want to spend their money on it, but they shouldn't expect the government to subsidize their extremely high risk behavior should it have consequences

thats the rescuers job though, thats what they signed up for, train for and prepare for
