It's getting bad. It's the tenants below me.
Every few nights I can hear them having sex like it's happening right in my room and the girl especially is extremely obnoxious and high pitched and their bed thumps against the floor and walls and it jolts me awake everytime I hear it.
I got work at 7am so this is bullshit.

I'm thinking just a note under the door or maybe a man up and knock on their door ask them politely to their face. I'm worried they might be shit about it and have even louder sex because who is going to take a noise complaint like that seriously?

Check any noise ordinances in your building or neighbourhood, document and record from your apartment and if the noise is above the limits? Follow the rules by reporting them. Possibly try to work it out with them ahead of time though.

Point is though if they're THAT loud? Probably breaking noise ordinances.

Remember, you likely own a handy device that can even go as far as reading the decibel levels where you are.

But yeah leaving a note about loud noises at late night being unacceptable is a good idea, I think

At 1 am in the morning it's a noise ordinance. If you can hear them going at it from the floor below it's a problem. Either call the cops or go down and ask them to quiet down. I'd say go ask first before the cops though.

Next time you see them, tell them they're doing a great job and somebody's throwin' that shit back right. The embarrassment of you even saying something that unfiltered will probably get the point across, it'll come off humorous, and you're letting them know it's bothersome by being loud without being so blunt.

A lot of landlords and building managers won't get involved in noise complaints, in my experience.

I'm not sure how true this is outside of my personal bubble, but it always felt like noise ordinance enforcement was treated as a petty or a waste of whoever's resources. Yet I read stories of places like Switzerland from students studying abroad, where after 10PM is quiet hours...and if you fuck with that, you're going to get a very passive aggressive note at your door the next day.

I kinda envy that, but I feel bad for those who work odd hours.

I live in BC, it's a term here that I often forget isn't everywhere. Think of a meeting of the owners where decisions about the building or complex are made, be it maintenance or other issues.

While the term is a BC thing I'm sure something similar applies to where you live if you're in an apartment building or town house that has individual owners of the apartments rather than a single owner of the building that's renting out spaces.

If the apartment building is the sort where everybody is a renter then these sorts of meetings wouldn't be happening and you'll do best to look up city ordinances if the people are breaking any and complain to the police if the building managers ignore your issues.

Sometimes you got to go Karen to get shit done, just never EVER let going Karen be your first impulse, it's a last resort thing.

They are not breaking any ordinances or laws. You have 4 solutions:

-politely speak to them and let them know that it's disrupting your life greatly. Hell, bring a bottle of wine to them when discussing it to show that you are trying to be cordial about it.

-buy earplugs. Buy a white noise machine. Get some padding for your floor.

-move out/sublet. If your lease says you can't sublet, kindly speak to your landlord about the situation and see if there can be a compromise.

-be the person who tries to create more noise/disturbances (within the law) and start a neighbor feud

I've been there TC. It's a simple procedure to follow. Results may vary, but here's all you need to do.

1.) Note under/on their door. Polite. "Hey, I'm one of your neighbors and wanted to politely ask that reduce the volume and loud thumping during apartment quiet hours." Something like that. Don't give them which neighbor you are specifically. Leave it vague.

2.) If note doesn't work and noise continues, talk to them face to face. Again be polite. Knock on the door, be polite, hey I'm your neighbor and just wanted to ask if you could keep the noise down during quiet hours. Something like that. Optional is keeping your phone in your pocket on recording for proof when item 3 comes around. Just so you can prove to management that you've communicated with the offenders.

2b.) If you're really ambitious, you can try #2 at 1am when they're literally doing the act.

3.) Call the landlord/management. That's why they exist. A lot of the time, they want people to work things out themselves, which is understandable. Now that you've given two honest attempts that have deliberately been acknowledged and ignored by the offenders, management should step in. Go to management, armed with the knowledge that you've followed the proper protocols (and hopefully have a recording), and they should start warning the offenders and giving them lease strikes and stuff like that.
